Wes is under appreciated

By RedBarron, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Everyone talks about how bad the X-Wings are for competitive play. What about Wes I feel like he really has a great ability and if you tie it in with R3A2 or even R2D2 with IA you can really annoy your opponent. For EPT I use adaptability or VI to get him shooting first and freeing up the targets of the tokens for everyone else.

What do y'all think?

I have been play testing a few lists with him as a focal point. Nothing definitive yet.

Wes is great. Such as Tarn Mison (with R7)

Wes with VI or Adaptability will for example steal the overclock-focus token from Dengar or target locks (Omega Leader)

If I had to choose an X-wing it would be him

The X-wing in general is somewhat overcosted for the basic platform. This is balanced to some extent by some excellent pilots (Wes, Wedge and Biggs are probably the top 3). Wes has become particularly popular of late due to the number of ships who rely on token stacking that he can mess with.

Having just walked out of a tournament with 16-17 players, I saw three different Janson/Biggs lists. Ok, I flew one... Definitely potent and nearly hard counter to some lists but it's an uphill fight against other lists and needs a lot of skill to beat a few. I've done no better than middle of the pack with my list.

All of the named x-wing pilots have excellent abilities. Not a single one is crap. However, the x-wing itself in terms of its statline and dial is less than stellar and that is what most people lament about the game's 'signature' ship.

Yeah, all the pilots are great, it's the ship they're in that's the problem. Even then, you can still build decent lists with the classic X-wing:

31 Wedge w/ Adapt, BB-8, IA.

31 Wes w/ Adapt, R3A2, IA.

26 Biggs w/ R4D6, IA.

12 Bandit.

The problem is in this current post-manoeuvring meta the X-wing is incredibly predictable and easy to outmanoeuvre, and it's single K-turn can be predicted a mile away.

I wonder if Vectored Thrusters will help breathe new life into the old T-65? Post-manoeuvre repositioning is going to be good, especially on the higher PS Aces but it competes with IA which is almost mandatory as an extra pseudo-shield.

I really looking forward to getting Vectored Thrusters for Wes.

His high PS isn't worth so much as say Soontir or The Inquisitor, without the ability to reposition.

I'd love VT to be cheaper, but at 2pts I guess it's ok.

VT will also make Wes [R3-A2, VI] incredibly reliable as an anti-ace option.

Don't forget Tarn Mison (with R7). He is even Zuckuss-proven against Dengaroos
