Is it my blissful ignorance, or is the Armada meta wide open?

By AdmiralThrawn, in Star Wars: Armada

Newer player here, been playing X Wing competitively for the past few months. Something I've noticed as I've been getting into Armada, and preparing to go to my first tournament is that it seems like the meta is pretty dang diverse, which is a big draw when you come from x wing.

I haven't even been to an Armada tournament yet, but is this really the state of the game? Or am I in for a cold hard reckoning when I do go to a tournament?

At this point, yes. Having 4 new ships released all at once has caused the meta to be blown all to hell. Unless you have been playing on vassal, it's experimentin time

For now this is very much the case. But even at the very end of wave 2 we saw both players at the finals table at Gen Con running lists that the meta conventional wisdom would probably say should not have been there. This game is way more about knowing how to play your list than it is about having a perfectly optimized fleet.

I think Armada has always had a more open meta than X-wing. Right now, it is in a really good spot. You will tend to see almost every unit that has been released get played. There's also pretty good diversity in upgrade cards.

Corellian Conflict is also going to deepen the field greatly.

Just wait for Wave 5 to come out. The meta will be even more skewed than now!

Meta? We don't need no stinkin' meta.

I never noticed a meta.........

We've just added 4 ships to a roster that only included 9. That big of an expansion is likely to shake things up. Especially when it occurs during the period between Gencon and Worlds.

So not only has there been substantial change but there is also going to be a lull in coverage.

As Q said after his Nationals win, this is the people's game. Yes, there are some things that are common, but any list can win any given day. This truly is the most balanced competitive gaming environment I've ever seen. It's pretty awesome. I've won 6 tournaments with 4 very different lists.

about the only two things that have ever been complained about are Demolisher and major rhymer

and, very briefly, Akbar

As was said here in Armada it is not what you bring to the table, it's how you play that really matters. This is exactly why I love this game, it is more about Learning how to fly your ships and how to manage your resources than what ship and upgrades you bring. And just when someone thinks they found the perfect build out comes a good counter that sends the "Meta" players back to the drawing board.

But that is how the game should be, less about list building and more about tactics.

This.

Armada has never had a "closed off" meta. All areas have their own meta really and it is all so changing. . .

You and me both. It is truly why I love armada over all other miniature games I have ever played.

After reading the Gen Con champ's write up, I can say that the only meta in Armada is a player with a keen mind for strategy, mathematical probability, deep knowledge of the game backed by practice, and discipline.

Oh, and also playing as the Empire doesn't hurt either...

I kid! I kid!

The only one I think that can be ignored is the Mathematical probability. Another thing that helps is match-up luck. Some people do indeed get lucky in their match-ups and don't face an opponent that could destroy them if they faced.

I can agree with that. But I've run up against some dice percentage hawks in this game before, so it doesn't hurt. But it can also be replaced by the deep knowledge part.

Correct. I have an understanding of the dice but really all you need is to know threat ranges and know when to slow down and speed up. . . now. . . where did clon's threat area thread go. . .

Eh, I don't know. Conventional wisdom definitely would have said Demolisher and a big Rhymerball would be at the top table. Only two ships was unusual, but not impossible.

I mean when an overwhelming majority of competitive imperial fleets have Demolisher and/or Rhymer, them being present is hardly surprising. I was referring to the fleet archetype as being fairly unusual.

Conventional Wisdom was that one or the other would be at the top table but we had not seen many tournaments won by both Rhymer AND Demo.

Can someone send me a link to the champ's write up please?

Yep, the meta is indeed wide open ! It's due to the nature of Armada's ruleset. Having ships in the list is not enough, but flying them properly (and preventing the enemy from flying his properly !) is most important.

Too early to tell with wave 3/4 out. Meta is unknown. Could be open or could just be more rhymes and demolisher
