Experiences & Observations from running several "fun" lists

By markcsoul, in X-Wing Squad Lists

So unlike most of you, I was late to the wave 8 party as my wife and I had our first child early in the year, so my xwing playing time was drastically cut down for many months, and I've been slowly getting back into it this summer when I've had free time.

Basically I decided to run some fun lists to try out wave 8, as well as run a few ships/upgrades from wave 7 that I had barely used before my son was born.

For each list I ran 5-7 games each. I ended doing 2 rebel lists, an imperial list, and a scum list. I'm hoping to run at least one fun list with imp vets next.

REBEL LIST 1

1-4 or 2-3 record can't remember

Red Squadron Veteran, Auto Thrusters - 28

Tarn Mison, R7 Astromech, Integrated Astromech - 25

Zeb Orrelios, Chewbacca - 22

Warden Squadron Pilot, Jan Ors - 25

Total - 100

Recap: This was the first list I ran, and I was trying to cram as many ships and upgrades in as possible that I hadn't used before or barely used. I didn't expect it to be very competitive, and the record kinda bares that out, but even in losses the games were pretty close usually.

Likes: Tarn with IA is pretty great, and IA in general is a pretty good fix for x-wings I think. Zeb was pretty decent for the points, like a slightly cheaper x-wing.

Dislikes: Naked k-wings are pretty worthless, Jan didn't get used much so she was kind of a waste I guess.

REBEL LIST 2

4-2 record I think

Lothal Rebel, Chewbacca, Proton Torpedo, FCS, Autoblaster Turret, Guidance Chips - 47

Rookie Pilot, Targeting Astromech, Integrated Astromech - 23

Prototype Pilot, Chardaan Refit X 2 - 30

Total - 100

Recap: Next list I ran was a bit more competitive, and I did pretty well with it actually. Lothal did the heavy hitting while the prototypes were used as distractions or blockers. Rookie got shots in if left alone. Don't remember much about the wins or losses I had with it.

Likes: Lothal Rebel build was "sort of" the typical build you see, but I liked adding Chewbacca for the 2 extra hit points. Also liked having the torpedo to shoot out the back with fcs after your first shot or two with your main gun. Targeting astromech wasn't too bad, not sure why it gets hate. I think I used it every game at least once. Overall will likely use that lothal loadout in a future competitive rebel build.

Dislikes: None really that I can remember, other than tweaking it to fit my playstyle more possibly it was a pretty solid list surprisingly.

IMPERIAL LIST

5-0 record

Zeta Leader, Wired, Weapons Guidance, Hull Upgrade - 26

Black Eight Squadron Pilot, Clusters Missiles, FCS, Extra Munitions, Guidance Chips - 31

Baron of the Empire, Push the Limit, Auto Thrusters, Tie/v1 - 25

Omega Squadron Pilot, Crack Shot - 18

Total - 100

Recap: So a perfect record with this squad, crazy! Even more amazing is it was against some pretty tough players and/or lists as well for many games. I started out with cluster missiles on the punisher for the first couple games, but then switched to proton torpedoes after FFG nerfed the way FCS interacted with clusters.

Likes: Zeta leader is awesome for the points, and could definetly get by without the hull upgrade and/or weapons guidance and still be a great piece in list. With the FO dial it's easy to use his ability almost every turn and wired is a natural fit for his ability. Punishers aren't amazing, but with FCS is does make it easier to get off all your ordinance. Can fire one going in and then do a kturn and fire again. Baron with the standard TAP loadout is a great value for sure. Another ship I could see used in future lists.

Dislikes: Again not any major ones. Punisher can die quickly so getting off a 2nd torp is no guarantee. The omega with crack is a decent filler but kinda boring after you get it off.

SCUM LIST

3-4 record

Contracted Scout, Proton Torpedo, Extra Munitions, Deadeye, 4-LOM, Guidance Chips - 33

Ruthless Enforcer, Mist Hunter, Tractor Beam, Zuckuss - 25

Syndicate Thug, Dorsal Turret, BTL X 2 - 42

Total: 100

Recap: So I had to try out a U-boat once to see what all the hype was about. Also wanted to try out the G1, and I had never used the BTL title before (or dorsal turret either). This squad though ended up so cursed it wasn't even funny. My record was 3-4, but should have been at least 4-3, maybe even 5-2. I had a blowout win and loss, neither of which were very fun. I had another win and loss that weren't quite blowouts, but still kind of lopsided. My dice were horrible in those two games. The one I won despite, the other I lost, although I might have still lost anyways would have been closer. Then I had 3 super close games. One I lost and might have won if I hadn't made a error using one of my upgrades earlier in the game. The other two came literally down to the last few shots. One I won, one I lost. Both had horrible dice again, the one I won shouldnt' have been that close, and I got majorly robbed of a win in the one I lost. Overall a very bad play experience with this squad which is too bad since it had the potential to be very fun.

Likes: Uboats are great for the price no doubts there. 4lom and zuckuss are both steals at 1 point each, since they don't get used every round necersarily. Tractor beam is nice, and seemed like it would work good with my btl ywings to make their shots even better, but they shot so poorly it didn't make that much difference.

Dislikes: Even if my dice had been better, not sure I'm a fan of btl ywings, at least with dorsal. They are cheap at least. But need something like an astromech to help out, probably unhinged to make their dial better.

Targeting astromech wasn't too bad, not sure why it gets hate. I think I used it every game at least once.

I also don't get why Target Astro doesn't see more use. Its solid for 2 pts. I think the main reason is the fact that it is best on generic pilots (exception: Hobbie loves this droid!), and frankly, very few people are willing to run generic x-wings (whether T-65 or T-70) these days. Its also decent on y-wings too...
