Newbie looking for advice

By Mykaeus, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Hi,

Other than a quick 10 min demo game I'm completely new to the game but would really like to get started.

I'm looking for advice on lists please, mostly for Rebels and Scum. I'm not the most internet-savvy person ever, so searching here I've not found much of what I was looking for, mostly stuff from 2014.

For Rebels I'm mostly interested in small ship builds. Ideally I'd of liked a completely X-Wing list, but from what I have managed to find on here that's not particularly viable these days? But I'd like to play using small fighters, as that feels fluffyist for me with Rebels. Preferably with at least one X-Wing (of either flavour), but definitely a small ships build for Rebels for me.

Scum wise I'm not entirely sure. I like the idea of using a Firespray, or multiple Firesprays, maybe mixed in with some Y-Wings or other fighter type craft. I think once the Protectorate fighters come out it'll be easier for me, 3 of those appeals to the fluff bunny in me.

As I write this down, I'm realising the big problem is I know what ships I like aesthetically, but I don't know how to put them in lists that work, and have no idea where to start with upgrades etc.

So, any help would be appreciated. If you list an upgrade card, could you do me a favour please and say what set it comes in?

Thanks in advance.

So far what do you currently own? I usually just read squad lists on this forum for inspiration or I'll fiddle with squad building apps to come up with stuff. Most apps will tell you where cards come from so you'll have a better idea of where to invest.

Buy defenders join the forces of law and order and help the emperor bring peace and prosperity to the galaxy.

Two X-Wings and an E-Wing is a current Rebel small ship list that did pretty well at the US National Tourney, but most would argue that was down to player skill more than some trick of the list.

My recommendation would be to grab an Original Core Set + X-Wing Expansion and Rebel Aces. MSRP thats $85, but if you shop around online you can get it for cheaper. If you're just getting started and playing casually you should be able to proxy the upgrades you need, and with those physical ships can build a variety of fun lists. Plus you aren't mixing TFA and Original Trilogy/Legends ships, since you care about fluff.

Two X-Wings escorting a B-Wing armed with a heavy laser cannon might not win a bunch of tournaments, but it just screams Star Wars and is fun to play.

I think the K-Wing is fun too, my nephew and I just started playing and the K-Wing was a small ship with a big ship feel. It was fun, at least until Omega Ace blew it out of the sky ...

Just buy everything, and in some cases multiples of everything.

Until you do buy everything buy the ship's you like.

If you're new to the game, I say forget about viability of ships. Want to play three X-Wings? Play them.

Classic X-Wings are great fun to play despite being outclassed by a lot of ships. Original core, an X-Wing expansion and a Rebel Transport will bag you the models and cards you need. (Although the transport is for epic play, it can retail fairly cheap online).

Other than that, fly what you like the look of. All ships have strengths and weaknesses, you'll discover that through play. My personal start was an original core plus two Y-Wing expansions. Then from there the Falcon. I'd also advise to start small, don't blow too much when you're starting. I find too many cards and options can be overwhelming and may burn you out.

As an addendum, I have no real advice for Scum, other than the Most Wanted expansion.
