5 TIE's is about what you want, even with named pilots.

So unlike Rebels, Imperial lists featuring TIE Fighters and TIE/fo's focus on quantity over quality. The main reason is that your base stats and PS will never compete with aces and large ships. In order to swing the balance back in your favour, you need bodies. Lots of them. It's like the starter scenario in the core set. It's two basic TIE Fighters vs Luke with his R2-D2. TIE Fighters rely on strength in numbers.

Omega Leader is really the only TIE/fo ship worth investing upgrades into. The vast majority of players give him Juke & Comm Relay. Maybe Hull Upgrade or Stealth Device if you're splurging. The idea is that he gains an evade on the first turn, then TLs a target as soon as he can. Because of Comm Relay, you now have an evade to Juke every turn; but the your opponent can't spend their focus to negate Juke because that counts as a modification.

Zeta Leader, Omega Ace, and Mauler Mithel all fit into the category of luxury TIE Fighters. You want to invest as little as you can into them because at the end of the day, they will explode just as quickly as your 12-point Academy Pilot. EPTs like Crack Shot are your friend here. They're one-time use, which is compatible with the short life expectancy of TIE Fighters. At the same time, they only cost 1-point and make use of your EPT slot. Wired is another option on Zeta Leader.

If you're trying to fly swarm, try to get 6+ ships at least. Howlrunner becomes really good value at that point, so consider picking her up if you haven't already.

Here's a list that might be up your alley:

"Howlrunner" — TIE Fighter 18
Crack Shot 1
Ship Total: 19

"Backstabber" — TIE Fighter 16
Ship Total: 16

"Mauler Mithel" — TIE Fighter 17
Crack Shot 1
Ship Total: 18

"Zeta Leader" — TIE/fo Fighter 20
Crack Shot 1
Ship Total: 21

"Omega Leader" — TIE/fo Fighter 21
Juke 2
Comm Relay 3
Ship Total: 26

Run 4 of them in formation and have Backstabber doing what he does best, backstab!

Or you could try taking Omega squadron-

Omega leader, Com relay + Juke - 26pts

Omega squadron pilot + Crackshot - 18pts x4

I tried it out against my friends Brobot list and it worked really well. In fact every Omega pilot made it home that night for dinner.

Fly in formation to start with, keeping OL tucked in at the back. Your first attack should cripple or destroy your chosen target and if it's still alive you can S loop left and right as you pass to hopefully get shots into it back next turn. If you can, keep OL alive until the end game where his abilitys really come in to their own.
