Damage Decks

By Forresto, in Star Wars: Armada

So i'm someone who will probably get into competitive play with other people who own core sets. I myself own one core set and therefore one damage deck. However Armada is a game I also want to have for the rest of my life which is why i've been building a rebel and Imperial fleet. It's something I want to continue to play maybe with my kids one day. Is one damage deck enough or should I consider trying to get another?

Will FFG ever release the damage deck in an expansion outside of the core set because as it is I don't know if I want to buy another core?

If you want to play with your kids at home, one damage deck should be enough. Eventually you will want a second though for things like Dodonna and much bigger games.

COmpetitively you will need 1 damage deck per person and 1 set of obstacles per person.

Ebay has your back

You can buy a second core set if you want all the trappings - obstacles, dice, maneuver etc. However if you already have multiples of those from competition, and just want a second damage deck so you can play a regulation home game, $20 is a small price to pay.

Unless there is another core set on the horizon (i.e. Force Awakens core set for x-wing) I would expect the only place you can get a damage deck to be in the core set.

You want to play core set only? Is that correct? If that is true I would buy a 2nd so you can make 300 point fleets. Then boom! Fleet size and damage deck issue solved!

Would be cool to see a Rebels Core set.

Ebay is an option, but I must say that "$20 is a small price to pay" is aweful generous. With a little patience and digging around you can get the entire Core set for just over $50. I'd rather pay $30 for 3 more ships, upgrade cards, dice, spare obstacles, etc. As much as I would like a 2nd damage deck myself, I won't get one until FFG sells them separately (which they won't, but I wish they would), or until a 2nd Core set comes out that is worth having.

I really doubt Armada will get a second Core set. X wing is more popular, less expensive (for Core Set), and needed (apparently) an errataed damage deck. Armada with it's $100 buy in is less likely to get a new Core Set, even if the deck is errataed.

PS don't forget that in X Wing you get $45 worth of ships for $40 versus Armada where you get $80 worth for $100.

And 10 squadrons, more cards, more cardboard, and I believe far more upgrade cards.

You're right, squadrons are always overlooked when people try to compare 'value' between an Armada and an X-Wing core set, and that does help the Armada set come closer to parity when it comes to total value. That said, I think you still get a bit more bang for your buck with the X-Wing set, specially since X-Wing is cheaper to build a fleet with.

That said, Armada is just so much better of a game, that the quality of the gameplay experience more than makes up for it. :D

If you keep your eyes open, you'll probably see a deck for sale on Ebay

There are 52 cards in a damage deck, so, remove the jokers and there are 52 cards in a regular play deck.

You could even scan and print the cards or just photocopy them. The use some sleeves to make a nice large format deck.

Won't be tournament legal but if you plan to play into your retirement you may appreciate the large format text.

Will 52 damage cards work for 400 point games or will I need a second deck at that point? I guess to be safe I just should do that.

Haha true enough, considering I already wear glasses then the large format text may come in handy then :D

The only time I got close to getting all the way through a Damage Deck, was when I was playing 4 Vics with Tarkin, with nothing but Repair Commands, vs an MC80 fleet with Dodonna.....

And even then, it was 6 cards to the end.

Despite the difference in core set, I'm not convinced that Armada is all that much more expensive, really. If you want to be at least semi-competitive, you really need to get a lot more expansions in X-Wing to give yourself the range of upgrade cards. Theoretically, you could know what's good and you could buy just what you need to build that one list you'll fly, but it's not realistic. You need to try different things and learn the game, which - realistically - means that you're in for pretty much the same amount of money as for Armada. There's just so much more that you need to catch up on and keep pace with.

Now, if you're just looking to play with the kids around the dinner table: X-Wing is a cheaper deal, no question.

I guess it's beside the point on Forresto's question. To that I would say: you don't need to buy an extra deck unless you want to have spares in case you lose cards. Even so, FFG would probably replace the incidental card if you ask them nicely.

Going a touch off topic here, but now you can have an MC30 with Fire Control Teams, APT and XX9s you could go through 12 cards to deal 3 criticals with Dadoona. Perhaps we'll see the damage deck get shuffled now and again?

Preaching to the coir here.

I am getting Dropfleet whenever that ships (should be soon) so I will be spread a bit thin but its fine. . . yes. . . it will be fine

Surprised that FFG hasn't created a damage deck app- I guess you would still need card or something to show critical hits....

Make any alternative Damage Decks available, and boom... Core Set sales plummet.
