Starkiller Base is Ilum...

By RodianClone, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

I'm curious where that map in the article came from - it's not in either referenced work (Essential Atlas or TFA Visual Dictionary).

I'm guessing that either the writer of the article created it or starwars.com had a staff graphic designer mock it up for the article. The last print edition of the Atlas was well before The Force Awakens was released and the EU was relegated to Legends status.

Nothing wrong with you making Illum the Starkiller Base in your game. Sounds like good background info to me. Whether LucasFilm says it's true or not is irrelevant to your game.

The description of Star Killer base says it was built out of an ice world because of it's natural crystals that made the base possible.

The description of Star Killer base says it was built out of an ice world because of it's natural crystals that made the base possible.

Ice world full of crystals. So... Ilum?

Ilum is near Ilum.

So I guess it can be Ilum?

Ilum does fit the description. But it doesn't say it's Ilum which isn't definitive but to me it would be an odd omission if it were Ilum. And if you trust the starwars.com article and map then they marked as not the same planet.

They wouldn't tell us if it was supposed to be a big reveal in the next movie (or a payoff for us speculating fans...)

Here's a kicker for you ...

In this article, the author actually postulates the theory that Starkiller Base is Ilum based off a pre-release piece of press that shows where it was located. The article came out a month before the movie even hit theaters.

http://newmediarockstars.com/2015/11/star-wars-maps-starkiller-base-ilum-theory/

The weird thing is, the same map shows Rakata Prime as well. He even mentions in the article Rakata Prime and notes the oddity of its inclusion.

So, here's the kicker. Starkiller Base was built out of a planet that had crystals, allowing for the power that made it a superweapon.

However, it was powered from draining a sun ...

just like the Star Forge ...

created by the Rakata.

Is this possibly why both Rakata Prime and Ilum's location (labeled as Starkiller Base's origin point) were on that map? Is there a possible plot thread there about the First Order harnessing the power of the Star Forge and planetary aspects of Ilum to make Starkiller Base?

Luke himself went off in search of the first Jedi Temple - and the Jedi came out of the collection of Force Users that the Rakata kidnapped and abandoned. Are all these events linked back to what the Rakata did in the time before the old Republic?

I can dream that Revan will come into canon in Episode VIII, maybe as an inspiration for the Knoghts of Ren, or mentioned with the Star Forge.

But those are idle dreams I'm sure.

When talking canon, aren't we obligated to consider starwars.com articles as canon?

Obligated? No. Are they the purveyor of official canon? Yes.

Yes. Starwars.com is canon. But some of us think they are being (intentionally) vague on the subject.

You know, some theories make so much sense, and it all just snaps together so well, and it's just too perfect.

But, at the end of the day, they come out with more information, and indoctrination theory is disproved.

If it's too good to be true, it probably is.

Though, as a counterpoint to what I just said. Occam's Razor. What seems to be the easiest and most likely solution? Is it Ilum and they don't want to say because... reasons?

Or it's not Ilum and they just didn't think this one out completely?

That said, I prefer it to be Ilum for a tighter package ink n my sense of the story so far.

I think it probably is Ilum, but they definitely won't say if it is or isn't ahead of the big reveal they have planned. Alternatively; they don't really care a whole deal about what was canon and is largely making entirely new content as they go along, thus mightn't consider a planet to be of significant lore importance.

Basically, no point debating it because I imagine it's something they may or may not address

Won`t adress YET....

An ice planet full of magical force crystals at the same exact spot on the established map... If it isn`t Ilum and has nothing to do with Ilum, they are breaking a lot of storytelling rules and throwing away great storytelling tools and opportunities.

That would just be weird and amateurish at this level. Come on, I mean: Disney, Star Wars, twitter-effect era..... Come on...

They have Lawrence Kasdan(Empire Strikes Back, Raiders of the Lost Ark...) and Michael Arndt(Toy Story 3, Inside Out...) writing this with JJ, Come on... Come on!

I um...okay. Fair enough. I can imagine a world in which one person calls the sky green when everyone else calls it blue, too. Shine on you crazy diamond.

Didn't one of the keepers of canon say directly that Starkiller Base was not Ilum?

The keeper's of canon have no obligation to be truthful either, especially if it serves some future purpose; even if that purpose is "well lets go here to get your first ligh-oh. **** it why is there a sun parked on this planet?!"

I'll just leave this starwars.com article here for reference: Where in the Galaxy are the Worlds of The Force Awakens?

Okay, now for that canon quote: " Cut across Wild Space and into the Unknown Regions, and eventually you will find Starkiller Base, which was situated not far from the legendary world of Ilum."

And finally, a little canon map:

If they're intending to do a big reveal later, that's possible. Do we have any precedent for this sort of chicanery?

Ilum isn't far from Ilum... And it is(was?) an ice planet full of force crystals, just like the planet they turned into Star Killer Base...

Maybe they are cloning planets now?...

Jon Snow's mother.....

No, wait, I meant Luke Skywalker's father.
