What's better: 3 x7 defenders or 2 with a palp shuttle?

By nikk whyte, in X-Wing

OGP with Palpatine and FCS

31 point Inquisitor

Vessery with Juke, x7, Stealth Device

Palp Shuttle, 2x Delta with x7, and Wampa is 99 points.

I like both of these squads; well played!

I often wonder if taking Palp when I could have a more-agile, more fun attack ship to fly was a bad call.........but then when I start flipping those dice to sides I like I always smile and realize he's the best weapon in the Imps box.

I'm running a double defender list with a palp shuttle (including an ion projector) this weekend. I really wanted to run a third ship that wasn't a Palp Shuttle (either Redline or a third defender) but there are way too many Dengaroo's in my area. I actually think that three defenders (or Redline) would have a nice advantage against Palp Aces because they can tear up the shuttle very quickly but with Dengaroo out there...

Palp Aces is so broken that you can just shrug off 5 hit APT blasts, maybe taking a single plink damage.

Palpatine is always the right choice.

I have flown the Dengaroo vs Palp / Juke Vessery / PtL Ryad matchup at least 5 times (having played both sides) and Palp Defenders has won every time.

Triple Defenders is WAY easier for Dengaroo to kill.

I faced a Ryad, Maarek, Palp list with Dengaroo and won. Granted, Manaroo had to finish off Ryad with Feedbacks and R5-P8. It was a pain in the ass to go through those defenses, my opponent also had pretty good green rerolls (generally getting the same results).

As a fan of Defenders though, I'd say that one was not flown to its potential, too much predictable k-turning, even from Ryad. And getting the shuttle in the middle of the board where I had the option of return-firing on it with Dengar while Manaroo plinked from the other side was not ideal either. Palp was the cherry on the sunday of having to whittle down two tough ships, which is why I got Manaroo in on it to kill him quicker.

It makes me really question if I'm bringing Dengar to a 60 pt tournament tonight. That's 2 x7 Deltas, or x7 Ryad and Omega, which I would HATE to face without Zuckuss.

You can also fit ryad WITH a delta :)

(60)

Countess Ryad (32) - TIE Defender

Adaptability (0), TIE/x7 (-2)

Delta Squadron Pilot (28) - TIE Defender

TIE/x7 (-2)

In the end I took Dengar with lone wolf, RecSpec, inertial dampeners, plasma torp, R5-P8, punishing one and countermeasure. I gave up half point to R5-P8 to finish a Carnor and Omega list, I tabled a Decimator in less than 5 minutes (2 rounds of shooting, don't joust Dengar), then lost to a Fat Han. I spent too much time trying to keep arc. I faced no Defenders in three rounds, there was only one there period.

I think you want the Palp Mobile instead of the 3rd Defender. Against Dengaroo, an evade token and a Palpatine gets you 2 evade results minimum.

Am I weird that I put a tractor beam on my shuttle? Sure, it doesn't help me get a shot, but Palpatine putting someone on a rock or into a position where they aren't getting a shot next turn is fun.

I like to imagine him using the force to throw the ship around, rather than the shuttle having a tractor.

I wouldn't run Palp in casual games, but in a tournament he offers great reliability. PTL Ryad, Juke Vessery and the Palp shuttle is crazy good synergy wise. I played a casual store tournament 3 weeks ago, one guy bought this list. We played 3 games, his MOV was 556. Was a decent variance in player skill. With 3 agility on the defender, palp isn't used much on defence, but can be the difference when the green dice fail.

I personally don't like Palp in small games, but hamstringing yourself in a tournament isn't the smart option either.

TL;DR I don't think you need a 3rd Defender. Vessery and Ryad are extremely efficient and do a lot by themselves.

I just kind of assume palpshuttle is an auto-include on any and all imperial lists. Been basically since before the Raider came out that I feel like I've seen an imp list without it.

I put that Tactical Jammer on him and use the big white cow to obstruct attacks.

It should be noted that Mike from the 186th podcast took Ryad/Vessery/Delta to UK Nationals and made top 4. Would he have done better with Palp? Possibly, but I think on the podcast he mentioned he liked the mobility and and ability to fly in formation than the Delta provided.

The PalpShuttle is great, but I think people underestimate how easily it can be isolated and destroyed by many lists.

I was on the receiving end of this kind of attack. A guy in a tournament put my 1 HP Vader on a rock. I rolled an eye. On my move I rolled a blank. I was very very lucky that day.

Specially in my hands, I just like small fighters more than big ships.

Maybe the upsilon will appeal more but it all depends on that dial.

While it's obviously strong it's certainly not an auto-include as many results show.

Unlike Biggs for rebels it seems.

On which number podcast did he talk about the Defenders??

Holy smokes palp/x7's are broken as balls. I won the tournament this thread was made in prep for. Only lost the shuttle once (came down to my ryad vs his inquisitor, FINAL SALVO)

In my second match I literally didn't lose a single shield. Against railgun zuckuss, 5 dice at range one. It just never mattered.

X/7 is waaaaaay too strong.

Good. Defenders were "waaaaaay" too strong in the lore.

I welcome our new Defender overlords.

Came in second at the tourney with this guy (congrats again, Nick!), and the top four was Palp with two x7 Defenders. Of those four, three were the exact same list. Soooo muuuch dice modification with these guys. Defenders are my new face. :D

I had the railgun Zuckuss Nikk flew against.

Sooooo much dice modification.

I had about 3 turns of getting a consistent 5 hits/crits with Zuckuss and an additional 2-3 hits/crits with Bossk.

Not a single damage got through.

The old Palp-Aces, Dengaroo, or Triple U-Boats....none of them gave me that much trouble.

The Palp-Defenders though....holy crapbaskets.

People doubted my predictions but I foretold the defenderpocalypse!!!

Look upon them with wonder and despair *Que lightning*

So many people trying to dice through Palp apparently

A n d here I am just shaking my head

The real advantages Palp/x7 has against normal anti-Palp tactics are that

1.) If you go for Palp first, the Defenders hit way harder than aces.

2.) Auto damage effects do not hurt Defenders as much as Aces.

Truth x7 is more health

But feedback is feedback

and if I can down an entire aggressor through Sabine bombs, you can kill a defender without having to pick up dice :P

or, you, kill palp first

without palp, you can kill them with a HWK primary

13679976_10157225457000142_2737362476461

(Yes it's Palob Zuckuss, but it's still a HWK primary)

I start to worry about the game when we can say "You should never not take Palpatine" and have it not be hyperbole.

I do know Defenders hit hard and now tank damage well with X7, particularly when combined with Stealth Device. My poor Jake & crack A-wings simply cried at their inability to push damage through three X7 Stealth Defenders (Five hit proton rocket? ... Equals no damage to two evades, two eyeballs, focus token, and evade token. Sigh ...).

On the other hand, I did have my full health X7 Ryad erased in one shot by a Bossk Party Bus. So there's that: "Green dice will betray you eventually. Love, Ryad."
