The Scum and Villainy Invitational

By blairbunke, in X-Wing

Hi everyone Blair Bunke for the Scum and Villainy Podcast here.

We've been talking about putting on a tournament for awhile now and it looks like we've finally managed to put something together. We were hoping to put on a unique tournament type that hadn't been done before but would still challenge the competitors and we feel like we've got that here.

The idea of a draft format style tournament always intrigued me and when Dion Morales from the Gold Squadron Podcast told me about the one he ran it motivated me even further to make it happen. Unfortunately the nature of this type of tournament limits the amount of participants that can play in it thus we've had to make this an invitational instead of the traditional open
tournaments Theorist usually puts on.

So if you're still interested in being a spectator here's how it's going to run. We've split up the entrants into 6 teams of 6. The reasons for this were twofold. One, we wanted to put our collective skills as a podcast up against some of the best competition out there to see how well we could hold up. Two, we wanted to incorporate some aspect that would force players to have to work together, as is so rarely the case with this game. The draft will run for 32 rounds with each team picking one pilot per
round. Once a pilot is selected it cannot be taken by any other team, additionally, each individual pilot can only be used once, meaning only 1 black squad or contracted scout in the entire field. Once the draft concludes the 6 teams will be forced to split their 32 pilots into 6, 100 point lists that will be assigned to each player to run for the duration of the tournament. Then each player will play three games against a randomized opponent from three other teams. After each team has played their 18 games the two with the best record will face off in the finals where 1 player from each team will play against 1 other. The team that wins the most games, with MOV for tiebreaker, will be declared the winner. We feel like this draft-type format will really put a player's skills, both in list building and flying, to the test so it should be a good exhibition.

Here are the teams.

Scum and Villainy: Kelvan, Sable Gryphon, Antigrapist, Blairbunke, Theorist, Sozin

Mynock Squadron: Dee Yun, Ryan Farmer, Dallas Parker, Joe Desmond, Minh Nguyen, Nick Belle, Will Pugh-alternate

Rook and Nova: Paul Heaver, Majorjuggler, Phildo, Serrate, Jeff Berling, Jeff Faulkner

Team Aces: Mu0n, Starslinger, Dom, Remi, Darthdane, AssortedNeedles

Team Champions: Rinehart, Frans Bongers, Blade_Mercurial, BMF, JChavDanath, Tormentin

Team Commonwealth: Morgan Reid, Travis Foss, Jaren Foss, Mr. Sunol, The Dave Side, Dodo

Well so what I'm still not playing why should I care?

Good question, before the tournament begins we're going to put up a poll asking people what team they think will win. Just filling out the poll will gives you a chance at a prize and if you guess correctly you will be entered into a chance at a good prize.

The draft is going to be held on Friday, August 19th at 6:30 PM PST. We're going to lock the room on vassal for the sake of keeping the chatter down to help it run more smoothly but we will be streaming it on our twitch channel https://www.twitch.tv/scumandvillainypodcast hope to see you there!

Amazing line-up of talent there! I hate to bet against Scum, but I like the Aces team there. Or Commonwealth.

Yeah my bet is on team commonwealth. They can't repel Foss of that magnitude!

You need to update the Team Commonwealth roster.

WHAT!?!?!?!?

This is a lock for S&V. A LOCK! Believe me!

Darth Reid and the Foss's? Team Commonwealth has this all tied up!

There are 208 pilots (including PS9 Poe and Rey) and there will be 192 picks. Which pilots are so bad that they won't get picked? Has Major Rhymer's time to shine finally arrived? Will the generic E-wing finally see play?

In an auction draft Morgan spends 70%+ of of his available budget on Soontir.

Very interesting. Will you be able to mix factions? If not the last 1/3 of the draft should be very challenging to fill out squads with the scraps remaining. Going to have to build lists as you draft and plan how to fill holes.

Team Champion, got this.

When is the draft? I can't wait to see the results.

Edit, I saw the date

Team Ace is my bet...I bet...all the lint and change in my pocket!

Since I was considered for Team Champions, I'll root for them! Sad I couldn't make this one, what a stellar group of players. Hope I'll be able to catch some of the action.

This is going to be far more intense than I originally anticipated.

Guess I'll have to....

FLY BETTER!

YEAHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That draft format is really going to be a heavy listbuilding constraint. Very challenging. I could see teams running out of decent pilots and having to put together really terrible lists.

Skillful listbuilding will win this tournament.

Scum & Villainy or Rook & Nova seem like decent teams. I'll only try making a real prediction after the draft cause then we'll have real data on how skillful these teams are. There is no Back to Dials team :(

okay, I've tried and tried but I can't resist anymore

it's not an open tournament, but an invitational instead!?

what a load of bunke!

This will be a blast to follow. The matches' Vassal logs will be made available to everyone, right? Tuning in live sounds awesome, but sometimes that can't be done.

Vassal?

Well, let me know when this hits a real play-mat. Because with all this amazing talent, i would have to see this in person.

I think a more interesting poll would be which pilots wont get selected at all!

I'm going to say Fel's Wrath and 3 other Interceptors, the 3 non- Corran E-wings, Winged Gundark, Rhymer, all scyks not named Serissu, Porkins and red sq. pilot, and... Bounty Hunter and Krassis Trelix.

So do you spread out the good pilots amongst your 6 guys and make 6 marginal lists so all 6 are as competitve as possible, but none optimized? Or do you build 3 good lists and 3 bad lists and hope for good match ups with the bad lists via the randomization of matching?

That's what I was trying to ask. I'm going to guess that it'll mostly be mid-PS pilots with bad abilities, no EPTs and subpar ship stats, so like Laetin A'shera or Graz the Hunter. I'm completely with you on the named interceptors without EPTs. Scyks will actually be okay filler ships imo, paying two points extra for a tie fighter is hardly the worst you could do.

You guys should check what the max room/game size is for vassal, even if you are just using it as a chat server.

Ive played other games on vassal where there was significant server lag with over 20 people.

Also, looking forward to having those mynock bros on vassal finally, I hope they stick around. I want to blow up ryan farmers a-wings too!

Anything good said about Mynock is simply propaganda that they've circulated and is unfounded and untrue.
