Gotta say, this game photographs WELL...

After a fantastic shot I grabbed at our regionals...

...I figured I had to try to find a way to equal it. I mean...it's been a few months, right? So...more staged shot, but...ehhhh....actually, no, not sure I hit that target...

Still - LOOKS dang good, eh? :D

The Inquisitor got a little close to the Death Star I see.

Did you just assume that TIE Advanced Prototype's pilot? (...'s gender?)

Triggered

That Gozanti's in for a world of hurt. LAUNCH THOSE TIE'S YOU IDIOT!

Nice. Add some motion blur to them

Wait there's more than one pilot in that expansion???

Don't think so. I keep hearing about a "Mail-in rooter" though.

well, to be fair thats how they did it back in the old days before CG.

Startrek and Starwars used miniatures hung by thin threads, black rooms, and camera tracks to do their scenes. Then they just did basic editing to splice them together.

when i was little i used to have a lot of those foam planes you get at a dollar store, took like 2 seconds to assemble them, they'd fly around a bit when you throw'm right, then crash into something and break a wing lol. I started collecting them and just hanging them on my ceiling in an epic dogfight pattern. Being 7 that was the coolest thing to me lol.

Can't speak for Star Trek, but Star Wars didn't use threads, they used sturdy metal armatures, often with motors for motion control. Star Wars was also very innovative in using cameras on tracks with motion control gears so they could reshoot the exact same motions with a different model so when edited together they could show several ships making the same maneuver even if they only had a few models.

The original startrek hung their ships. In fact in the episode where theyre chasing the Romulan bird of prey, towards the end when they hit it and its capsized (how in space i'll never know but hey late 60s tv) you can actually see a glimpse of the wire hanging it lol.

Startrek next gen had their models upside down and recorded it with upsidedown cameras. Considering the enterprise D model they had was pretty **** huge...kinda had to do that lol

i remember seeing a documentary about the original trilogy for starwars and they had models on arms and zipline-like getups.

Different methods, same mentality.

Honestly if i had a good camera (somehow my phone is better than my actual camera..rofl...which is a bit of a downside when you have LED lighting lol) i'd do some obviously-fan-made-not-too-shabby dogfight videos for the luls. I dont know how to do the editing to get rid of the strings/arms but i'd just play into it for a bit of comedy lol

The only one I remember seeing on a zipline was Luke's Snowspeeder as it was crashing on Hoth. Everything else was on arms.

It seems that certain software can really help with that. Not sure the monetary investment in the software, though.

Great, now you gone and motivated me to go take pictures!

What set up were you using Xanderf?

Details here. Compared to my photography hobby X-Wing is rather cheap.

I'm actually just using a simple point-and-shoot. Canon Powershot A590. Might be wrong, but I think BGG retains the full set of EXIF data on the 'original'-scale image...

(Trick, of course, is the macro focus. Macro focus: it's like a cheat code for photography!)

Isn't inquisitor a job title?

Maybe BGG does but not everyone gets access to that.

I'll certainly agree that having a good close focus ability is certainly critical especially when it comes to miniatures. Were they hand held as well because a problem with such close focus is usually such a narrow DoF that a little movement or inaccuracy can completely throw off an image. The P&S probably fits on the board better than a big DSLR and many macro lenses would.

Wow, not having a BGG account, I....I can't even imagine. That's such a fantastic site (and, I mean, it's free, so...)!

ANYWAY - in the case of the Inquisitor shot, yeah, that was just hand-held. Good lighting in the store, so it wasn't an issue. ?And I think even for the Defender shot? For the Ghost/Gozer shot I did use a short (like 4") tripod for the camera - but more because I was fiddling with positioning on the ships a lot in the frame and didn't want to have to try to remember where I was holding the camera between changes. Although it looks like I did end up taking the shot I used at 1/25 sec exposure, which would definitely have been too slow for handheld, anyway.

BGG?

Where the full-size (3k x 2k) versions of the images I linked above are.

Awesomest site on the web, IMHO. But, then, I only came to X-Wing from being a lifelong boardgamer, and still am, so...

I mean...boardgames, man. So much fun...

Totally agree! I take shots at most tournaments and post them on our local facebook group. So easy to make them look good.

Yeah, I like the 'staged' shots a lot (the Defenders and the Ghost) - I do think they came out...okay.

But, good grief . That shot of the Inquisitor? Nothing staged about that, at all. Just me, running as TO of the regionals, taking tons of pictures all day, sorting through them later, and...yeah, that one.

**** , this game photographs well...

im an avid boardgamer but problem is its really hard to find people willing to do it anymore. Miniature games are actually easier to get a game for lol.

I don't know where you are from, but boardgames are making a comeback in England. Here in Nottingham we've had 2 boardgame cafes open since January. One of which attracts a lot of X Wing players.

i live in nebraska, usa. Lots of corn fields and cows. My flgs is one of the few places in the entire state where miniature gaming is a thing. They do boardgames on sundays but i stopped bothering because its all clicks of friends so theres nothing to join in on when you have no friends like moi.

i just show up, people know me, find someone who isnt in a game, and play. The fact that i even do that much is a bit of a shocker to me, since im not a fan of large groups of people. Which is part of the reason im reluctant to goto any xwing tournies...or conventions...i really, really do not like large crowds.
