I need a broken list....just not overtly gimpy.

By Velvetelvis, in X-Wing

I need some ideas for lists that are pretty bad.

For training new players. I don't want to be the guy that sais.."I'll show you x wing.here meet soontir fel"

I don't want to be to blatantly handicapped. Just... definitely handicapped.i want to enjoy the game too. I just don't want to auto win because they brought a death rain , and boba fett.

Forgot ALL about that one! Perfect!

Do the random generator, its great fun.

Alternately, try thematic pairings.

Luke with R2-D2 and Proton Torps, no IA or Guidance Chips. Poe with BB-8 and Proton Torps (again, no IA/GC). Dutch with Dorsal Turret and R2 Astromech. Recognizable SW characters for hardcore SW nerds or casual viewers (excluding Dutch), introduces turrets, action repositioning, list synergy, all without being OP. And, best of all, you have a reason to pick these ships and upgrades, so you don't have to say "Im deliberately playing a weak list to go easy on you".

i cannot figure out how to use that fabs builder ffs. the interface is freaking confusing. how do you randomize from all possible components?

Doesn't broken have the same meaning as imba ? But you are asking for a bad list not a good list then?

Yeah - I read the title as "Power List" too.

I'm not going to lie, as soon as I'm past the core set demo, the first thing I tell rookie pilots is to play Soontir+ mini swarm. It teaches them how to dodge an arc and how to fly a formation at the same time, two hallmark talents of top tier players.

Take four x-wing's.

Scyks, maybe with mangler or ion. They can be a lot of fun to fly, at the same time fun for for the noob on the other side of the table, when they finally catch you in arc and swat you.

You have to tell it what you've got using the drop down menu next to each ship, then you can just click the random button and it will spit out some lists.

Once you've done it once you can copy the string of numbers out of the quick selection box. That way you can just paste it back in there in future rather than filling everything out again.

I guess if you just wanted it to random from one of everything, you could just type a bunch of 1s in to the quick selection box as a lazy alternative. ;)

Fly Luke, Biggs, Wedge - Bit of Episode 4 all there!

Luke - Lone Wolf, R2, Shield Upgrade

Wedge - Predator, BB-8 and IA

Biggs - Biggs droid, IA.

Apart from BB8, fairly fluffy, not too powerful but has some tricks up its sleeve to make the newer player think.

Fly Luke, Biggs, Wedge - Bit of Episode 4 all there!

You don't bring Biggs to a beginner game.

Just fly generics of everything.

Just fly generics of everything.

This. If you're introducing newbies, don't overload them with rules and exceptions first time out.

Let them get to grips with the basics first - movement, actions, firing arcs, initiative order and combat, THEN, once their interest has been sufficiently piqued and just as they think they're getting a good grip on things, THEN introduce them to unique pilots, abilities and upgrades.

You'll blow their minds.

The other option is to simply handicap yourself. Let them fly 100 pts you can fly 75 or something. Whatever works.

I start with a core set, all naked. Let the Padawan fly the tie fighters.

Then introduce some upgrades.

When we move to 100 point dogfight lists, I let them go buck-wild (within the rules). I fly a middling Large base and one or two small base ships. At this point they've got the basics of combat and movement down and are working towards building their own lists.

Something like

Leebo w/ Determination, Title, Mangler, hull upgrade, thread tracers, recon spec

Luke w/ Deadeye, R2D2, Proton Torp, Guidance Chips

Bandit Squadron pilot

This lets them see some of the interactions. It gives us a chance to talk about target priority. Plus most of us got a warm fuzzy the first time we blew a large based ship. There's enough scary stuff there to make it a bit daunting for the new player to come up against, but the short comings of the list make it easily beatable with a little concentration.

I like anything with Dutch and Garven for games with beginners. Fun, but not too nasty. Let's the beginner get plenty of hits, and makes PS6 a good mental exercise in possibility mechanics for you. Fill out the list with a Gold or 2. A Rookie and Prototype. Something at a low PS. Then pretty much no matter what the noobie brings, you can lose to it without being bored to tears.

In that white text box labelled "quick selection" just fill it with 11111111 or 22222 across the entire box. That will give your collection ever component.

Change the play mode to Standard.

Then in the bottom left, hit "Random."

Hope that helps!

Broken in a normal sense or in the warped sense?

because normal slang... well, Palp Aces are a broken list.

Just show the dude
Wes+Batwedge+anything list

will surely make their brains itch, while not being overpowered-broken

Best way to teach the game IMO is to follow the quick play instructions from the original core set. A single T-65 vs 2 TIE/ln, limited mechanics to start, then work your way up.

You could limit yourself to the upgrades that come with each expansion.

I used to play against newbies using an ABXY list. It gives a bit of everything without overloading on any thing. Something like:

Green w/ CR + PTL

Blue w/ HLC + FCS

Rookie w/ R2D2

Gold w/ ICT

It comes in at 99 points and introduces them to quite a bit of the deeper X Wing rules, including initiative bidding. Note this would be after they're familiar with the basic rules and the 2 TIEs vs. X Wing.

First, it introduces them to a flanker via the green, and the power of PTL, as well as the boost action. The Blue introduces the HLC and how you don't get your extra R3 die for it. It also emphasizes why fully modifying your attack is crucial, especially as you get more dice on the attack. And it shows them BR (though they should already know this). The Rookie introduces them to rebel regen, and the Gold introduces them to control and turrets. The list will also show the power of having multiple ships with the same PS, allowing you to activate in any order.

Make sure you explain not only what the abilities are, but why they're important before the match. As you're going through the game, share your thought process. Like if you barrel roll with the B wing, state why you're barrel rolling, and make sure to say something about how the TL from FCS is really allowing you to do so - otherwise you're throwing naked dice which as next to useless.

Well seeing as I was recently called ignorant and inexperienced with this game any list Ive ever suggested is probably broken
