Bossk and trandoshan hunters have me interested in picking this up. Are they competitive?
trandoshan
Trandos are great! Bossk can inflict massive damage, and if you don't concentrate fire on him, he is all but invincible!
Trandoshans are definitely competitive. DecenT damage for cost and every attack causes a strain.
However, to field 2 regular or 2 elites, you have to get two Core Sets. One box comes with two pairs of Trandos but only one deployment card of each type.
Bossk is now basically the baseline for competitively costed uniques. Hoth damage and highly durable for cheap.
Edited by Engine25Thanks for the letting me know. So you could do bossk 1 trandoshan regular, and 1 elite? Sorry I haven't even read all the rules yet

Strictly speaking, using only one Core for a Skirmish tournament, this is correct.
However, if you're playing casually, then proxy in whatever you want. If you're thinking about this as something to take to an event, you have a couple of options.
1)Buy another deployment group on eBay or another second-hand outlet and make sure they include the deployment card you need
2)The Elite Trandoshan Hunters came as a promo card with 2015's Summer Kit, which can be found for sale online at a reasonable cost, or traded for if you have a local player base
3)Ask a friend or other good samaritan to borrow their deployment card and use it for the event
4)This is the hardest pill to swallow; get a second Core. This will also allow you to double up on other useful units in Skirmish, like the Nexu/Elite Nexu and this way is ultimately the least expensive option, rather than spending $30/each on eBay to chase down a couple of odds and ends, if you're trying to flesh out your legal Skirmish options
I like the regular Trandos a lot, you get a lot of attack value per point. The elites are less cost-effective.

If you want to play cometitively, I really recommend buying a second core set. There are many figures in the core set, you'll want to have twice.

I think this highly depends on the faction you want to play, unless you want to be able to play all factions. If playing Scum is your thing (as it was/is mine), I don't see much value in a second Core set. The money is way better spent on getting Return to Hoth and some of the choice boxes.

Yes that absolutely works. You'll want to fill in with sone support like Gideon Argus and C3PO, and there are great units for a Scum in Return to Hoth, Bespin Gambit, and the upcoming Jabba's Realm that will all pair nicely with your Trandoshans.
I definitely recommend one or two cheap support activations like the Gideon/Threepio combo mentioned above, or Jabba the Hutt will be great when he releases. Also, Under Duress from Bespin is a great skirmish upgrade for a Trandoshan list, and it also pairs nicely with the Wing Guard troopers, also in Bespin. A skirmish list is 40 points, and Bossk, Elite Trandoshans, and regular Trandoshans total 25, so you have 15 points to play with.
The three only total 25 points? Nice, I'll really have to consider this. I do only fly casual so I could proxy. Now to convince a friend to buy Chewie and wookie warriors haha
Not sure if fielding 4x the same unit is necessary for Trandoshans to be competitive. Right now, the only competitive List that uses almost only one unit showing up is 4x Wookie Warriors because of their point denial Hit Points, but I think using only 2x Trandoshans and Bossk is enough. I think you need to contest some objectives, and Trandoshans are quite slow. Adding a Bantha, Nexus (they have some Synergy with Under Duress, as they give automatic Bleed) or Hired Guns might actually be more competitive. Of course, if you like to have an all Trandoshan List, go for it. It is certainly playable, with the regular unit beeing more cost-effective.

Wookiee Warriors bring great durability for cost. Melee characters can sometimes suffer in a largely ranged environment, but you can definitely make it work if you're careful. Chewbacca, I'm afraid, is simply far too expensive. He's not as bad off as Han, but they are both mostly binder fodder.
The second core set is really the way to go. You don't want to have to deal with jerks like me who bought 14 core sets and piece parted the components for a tidy profit.

What other second hand outlets? I've only seen them on Ebay and on Team Covenant back in the day when they were selling excess core set miniatures.

I'm not so sure on that. while i agree that the extra health and damage for 3 extra points is debatable; the elites can self focus, which in itself is VERY powerful and can not go overlooked.
i haven't done enough play testing with elite trandoshans yet to make a full claim.. but the regulars are definitely worth their cost, i'm in full agreement with you there
I do plan to play with much more with the elites in the near future to see how they fare overall now that scum is competitive for tournaments
Edited by executorthe elites can self focus,
This is powerful, if you can pre-focus them by shooting a door. In most other cases, the Pierce 2 will cause more damage (now) than a focus could (on the next attack).

or focus them up with other figures such as gideon and c-3p0 on round 1
then they will likely stay focused as long as they are still alive and shooting
