A Hydrospanner for Everyone

By Darth Meanie, in X-Wing

Tired of nerfs and fixes? Yeah, me too. It's not the ships. . .it's the format. If everyone would just play Epic, the game would improve overnight. Sure, there's no meta, so building a squad will be harder. But to help, I've come up with a few mnemonics to get you started:

X-Wings Ding Things

B Bombers Blast Boats

A's role is as an A's hole

Y Try You'll Fly and Die

Glass TIEs Die Fast

Soontir's TIE Sooner Dies

Six Scyks Suck (Richard informally)

Bro Bots Fire Twice the Shots

Kihraxz Rhymes with Orange

epic is time consuming as **** and not everyone has the table space

especially in popular urban centered gamestores that cater to other games outside x-wing

epic is time consuming as **** and not everyone has the table space

I'm sorry to force you to spend more time with your hobby.

Hobby stores could slide 2 tables together and participants could play team Epic.*

*Unless you FLGS only provides a quantity of tables in prime numbers. Then you're right. . .it's impossible.

epic just takes as much space as your standard 40k game. Which i'd be surprised if a gaming store doesnt have 4by6ft tables around.

my flgs slowly bought those FatMats for their tables and one of them is a starmap. Awesome for xwing/armada, terrible for 40k/warmahorde lol

The issue is some of us have things like jobs and responsibilities and can't play a 3 hour game. Epic games are fun but take for freaking ever.

And you realize that the standard folding table is only 2 feet wide, don't you? So every store that I've ever played at, they either had a 3x3 piece of wood to sit on the table or we've brought our own. Most places use 4x2 tables which makes putting two 3x3 boards on them difficult.

buy a sheet of 3x6 foamcore, play epic on just about any table.

The store I go to has wall-fied folding down 6x4 foot tables and several rolling 6x4 foot tables that due to Warmachine people have made large overlays that are 4x8 which works great for putting 2 warmachine games or 2 wing games net to each other. on the same table...or even just big games of Epic Xwing or 40k.

Metagame refers to thought about a game as a game. It's just metacognition applied to playing games. Saying something doesn't have a Metagame or complaining about its existence is like denying/complaining about the existence of rocks.

Well, I guess I just work on the assumption that if you head somewhere to play X-Wing, you will in fact commit to more than one 100-point match to make the drive worthwhile.

I'm just curious how many people pack up their squad, drive to their FLGS to only play a single game and then return home?

no one

they might stop by their FLGS on their way home from work, have enough time for a game, and then go home to prepare for the next day

especially if there's a league going on and they can only meet their opponent during a weekday due to familial obligations etc.

sorry guys, epic isn't an automatic "yay everything is awesome fix." it requires a far more intensive investment of time and resources than your standard 100-point set up

not to mention it's pretty easy to break with spam generics. it's not an automatically more balanced format, it's just different things work better than at 100 points

For 40k, i almost never played more than 1 game because it lasts around 3hrs.

Xwing i rarely play 1 game unless i just had bad timing and im the odd number player.

Me.

2 kids, a wife and a crazy busy job means that I'm extremely lucky if I get even one game a week in - but I will take it when I can. I have a lovely Feldherr bag that lets me take out a few different squads and have a smaller ring-binder that either have the cards I need in, or a print-out of my squad, and I put it in the trunk of my car and then if the stars align, I might be able to head straight to a game and still get to see the kids before they go to bed.

Last time I did that, I got my ass handed to me in about 17 minutes through pure stupidity on my part and my guess is that my opponent thought I was so butt-hurt that I rejected his offer of a rematch and ran home to weep. Which I almost did.

Anyway. It's no value judgement on those that have more time available but even finding an hour a week for a game of X-Wing makes that a rare, but good week.

Doesn't diminish my love of the game any, of course ;)

I haven't played epic in a while, but can't you still spam Biggs with Comms boosters/Jan/R2-F2/SD and make him nigh invincible?

I don't enjoy Epic.

Not at all, I just find it silly that he thinks the fix to everything is to get everyone playing 3+ hour games. Because that's how you get fewer people playing the game.

Maybe I'm lucky, but my FLGS is 10 minutes from my house door to door. We have 4 people in my group, so each set plays a game, then if both games go fast, we might get in another. But usually it's just one game.

As it's already been said epic is not a fix for everything just a fix for specific things you don't like...

Pros

  1. Unused ships in the 100 point game see play
  2. hard to hit aces crumble to multiple attacks
  3. No established meta (this is actually not true but I'll get to that)

Cons

  1. Time and space (i'll make this one as its well know drawbacks)
  2. While you don't see aces crushing everything there are plenty of broken parts to epic 20+ swarms, 9 TLT's, Super Biggs, ect.
  3. There is a meta and if everyone plays epic it will become more defined. Look into Outryder cup ran in the PA, WV, and OH area we have an established meta some lists that pop up every time.
  4. Sometimes 3 hours is horrible when you know you lost in the first hour (it happens)

The bottom line is its different and that can be enjoyable but to pretend like everything will be fixed if we all start playing epic is naive.\

Actually I have a super power hyper competitive list for each faction and epic ship in epic. Hyper competitive. With a lot of details learned from other players. So. No epic has a meta. People just don't know about it until they lose 300-25.

IMO, I think it would help the competitive X-wing community if MORE players played Epic... mix things up a bit.

FFG Organized Play could start popping out tournament kits for Epic/Cinematic events. The prizes can include sweet acrylic and alt.art cards that are not Epic only gear, so players of standard dogfight X-wing would be more inclined to attend and compete.

Yes, of course. It's not the attitudes of the players involved, it must be the format! **** that format, why can't it be more like what I want and less like how it is? If only those paid game designers had only catered to my wants in the first place we wouldn't be here now! How dare they create a wonderful game that caters to both the competitive and casual player alike! Clearly the resounding success of X-Wing is due solely to my hand painted collection of T-65s depicting every single member of Rogue Squadron. Which, by the way FFG, once you're done covering everything in foam for me, could you please give the T-65 an extra attack dice?

Thanks and have a great time.

Sincerely,

Seems like. I meant to post something tongue-in-cheek and instead I got a root canal.

Unfortunately, I usually only get in one game at my FLGS. I do only drive ten minutes, but with family obligations, it's one and done. Occasionally, I will get in more games if we are playing furball, since those can usually be over pretty quick.

I do that sometimes. Though I can play epic at home anyway. ;-)
