Instead of nerfing ships...

By churchwarden, in X-Wing

What if...

We all started a new x wing motto.

"Fly better"

It works for a lot of things. Dont like jumpmaster torp boats? Bump them, deny them actions. Get into range 1.

Dont like palp aces? Boba fett that emperor. Bump soontir. A couple homing missiles into the inquisitor.

Afraid of them killing your nice rebel ace? Hello biggs. Hello regen. Hello z95s. Lots of options for a player to do better, other than complaining the opponents ships are just better. Maybe the opponent is just better or more practiced with their list.

So....

Fly better

Jerk, I want to complain

4 TLT Ys is still the best list.

I'd rather nerf than clickbait

Yeah, I know right? I hate all these nerfs they keep rolling out.

I hear in the next patch Soontir is going down to 2 red dice primary and Deadeye is getting bumped up to 3pts.

...what are you even talking about?

I agree and so do many others.

There is a group on this forum that absolutely will not play at home for fun with agreeable Friends... so you learn to respect the rare cool ACE Wingers for their occasionally informative observations on the high end combos, and you just ignore the ones that treat this game like it's a job... that ONLY they can do... because.

;)

I don't want anything Nerfed, I want currently "bad" ships (E-Wing, Scyk, StarViper, Punisher, Kihraxz etc... etc...) to be playable in niche roles. I don't want anything in my collection collecting dust. I paid good money for that! They don't have to be super ships, just give them unique roles in casual play.

PS Plus it is good business practice. Once I learned Imperial Vets were coming out, I made sure to purchase one extra Defender before its release. Now I am glad I have 3.

Every once and a while you post a gem JB. And that's why I love you.

This wasnt supposed to be a scathing rebuke. Just more a tongue-in-cheek observation. Xwing is fun. HotAC is amazing. Trying out different combos and synergy to see if u can get that 7 dice attack to hit is great. Having a "cold one" and some snacks and gaming with a group of friends is a great way to spend an evening....

Thanks Star Brother. I love my fellows here... we keep each other company and make each other a little bit better off.

I know a lot of the people that I do not like hate me and think that I am a stupid dope... that is fine by me.

The Star Brothers here and these FFG Goodies that we love is just about the only thing that I do factor into my life.

:)

...make the other ships stronger.

NERFing a ship is fine but it should ONLY be called for after attempts have been made to figure out if that "fly better" motto can actually do anything about it. Also note that "fly better" should NOT need to mean "fly perfectly" which may be a counter but isn't something that should be expected.

Most would say that Phantom, by way of Cloaking, suffered a massive Nerf when the decloak timing changed. In many ways that is correct and while it may have been possible to fly to defeat the decloak it really wasn't something that you should expect everyone to be able to do.

While I'm certainly not a fan of the NERF! cries that come up the moment something seems "too good" there are times that something probably is too good and needs something done to cut it down.

What nerfs? I saw a rules clarification.

Any way. I had to take a step back for a couple of weeks, just to get the fun back in myself.

So....

Fly better

Soontir with no actions and only 4 naked agility dice and Palpatine to defend with has a 48% chance of taking no damage from a 3/3 hit attack. That's IF you get 3 hits.

Considering that I'm already down an attack on Soontir because I had to use a ship to block, bumping doesn't actually work that well against Soontir because even with no actions chances are he's dodging your shot. Remember, that 48% is if you get 3 hits.

So if you play right against a Soontir and block him, chances are he'll be okay.

The problem with playing against Soontir is that it's only possible to kill him in very specific, difficult to set up circumstances and if his dice spike (or the Soontir player just gets average rolls honestly) for those one or two turns you can manage to set up those circumstances, there is nothing you can do.

Ndru. Vi. Homing missile. Guidance chip. Glitterstim.

5 dice. Cant spend evade. Pretty much guarantees 5 hits with tl and focus and guidance chips. Soontir gone. Or severely damaged. Range 3 is pretty large. And plan an iniative bid so soonts moves first. So soontir next time gets 3 dice if hes still kicking it.

They hell they don't.

Aside from the fact that "nerfing" is not really possible, once a card is printed, its for life, the request to make ships "viable" is always looked at from the perspective of a competitive 100 point standard match and it's here where I think most X-Wing players have so much trouble understanding that not all ships are designed with your competitive metas in mind nor should they be. After all, 100 standard matches and competitive play while on display and draws people to the forums for discussion is a just one part of X-Wing, arguably not even the largest part. How many people compete compared to how many X-Wing players there actually are?

Scenario based, thematic driven, custom point values in particular Epic play, custom campaign modes which even include cooperative play at this point are just some of the ways that the game is played outside of competition.

Not trying to bust any balls here but the reality is that all of the ships you mentioned are not only viable, but are insanely awesome as they are, just not in the 100 point standard competitive match. For example E-Wings are insanely good in Epic play, pilots like E'than A'bhat for examples are insane when you have 10 ships leveraging the ability instead of 2 or 3, and its dirt cheap in Epic. The same is true for so many ships and they really all have a home somewhere in X-wings various ways to play the game.

On the flip side a lot of ships in epic play that are fantastic in competitive don't fair well at all. A good example is Palp Aces... eh.. that has ZERO chance in Epic play, Interceptors get mopped up as quick as Tie Fighters because Arc dodging is not really a think when you have 10 different arcs in every direction and huge ships shooting at you.

Anyway my point is that all of these ships have a home, they don't require nerfs even if that was an actual thing which its not. Its worth pointing out I don't think the game has this perfect equilibrium of balance, I recognize there are issues, some can be overcome by playing alternative types of matches, some simply by flying better and of course some stuff is just broken and that's all that can be said about it.

Clearly, that doesn't work around here. See "A Hydrospanner for Everyone," posted just 7 minutes before you.

400v400 epic is honestly the most fun way to play this game. 100v100 competitive is not bad, but just feels so much like a game of chess rather than a war game set in the SW universe.

Which may have been my point elsewhere before I was lambasted as being and insensitive Scyk vis-a-vis everyone's available time and the size of their table.

Agreed. I do enjoy all variations of the game, but in the end, when I play Star Wars: X-Wing, I want it to feel as epic as the movies and I just don't think you get that out of 100 points. You can get an interesting competitive game with 100 poitns, its ok, I even I think there is a lot to learn from playing 100 point standard matches but the fact that this is somehow the "default" version of the game surprises me as it really is probably the least interesting.

Epic opens up not only the many different ships and pilots but the various gear that you ordinarily wouldn't justify putting on ships. It also lets you re-create Star Wars moments which I think is actually the best part. There is nothing like flying an authentically outfitted Red Squadron against a hail of Tie Fighter Swarms.

It's the default game mode because epic games take too long to be the standard.

I'm fine with Jumpmasters, Dengaroo, hell, even Palp Aces can be fun to fly against, but only because the victories feel so much more satisfying.

But some ships are bad. The T-65 X-Wing, Khiraxz, Scyk, E-Wing. All some of the worst ships in the game. I'd love to do what JBR7 says and just play X-Wing how I want. But when the most thematic lists crash (TIE Swarm vs Luke Biggs Wedge) I'd like to see my X-Wings have a fighting chance, and not be kneecapped out of the starting block because the design of the Wave I ships was godawful.
