R4-D6 and Crtitical hits

By DerRitter, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Can someone please tell me if i'm reading R4-D6 right? As I see it, it only cancels normal hits, no critical ones, so:

hit, hit, hit, hit -> (R4-D6 triggers) 2 normal damage + 2 stress

hit, hit, hit, crit -> (R4-D6 triggers) 2 normal damage + 1 critical damage + 1 stress

hit, hit, crit crit -> (R4-D6 doesn't trigger) -> 2 normal damage + 2 crit damage

I'm right?

Yep, that's right.

The two explosion symbols are different. Just because something works with one does NOT mean it will work with the other. R4-D6 is an example of that but there are others.

R4D6 would be much better if he worked on crits as well... As he is, he's just IA bait, and perhaps not even the best one.

except against HLC i rarely suffer more than 3 hits. Dont see the allure to this guy at all. The 4th is ALWAYS a **** crit

3 is enough ;)

But yeah, it's not as good as it could be.

It's still one of the two best options for Biggs' astro, but that's about it.

(Actually ARCs can probably use it. 1 AGI is much more likely to take 3 hits than 2 AGI.)

oh wait the 3rd counts and gets canceled? thought it was more than 3.

i fail

Yeah, the 3rd gets cancelled. But that either requires a 3 dice attack to roll 3 hits (25% w/ a Focus but no rerolls) and Biggs to roll 0 evades, or a 4 dice attack to roll 4 hits + 1 evade, or 3h1c + 0 evades, in which case you're still taking a crit, but you're only taking 2 hits. In 9 rounds at gencon, it triggered ONCE on Biggs. And it was a meaningless trigger. (Left him with 1 hull, died on the next shot anyways - would have had 1 hull and no droid without the trigger).

I've been toying with R3A2 on Biggs recently. For a point more, it grants you some opening round control, and he dies fast anyways, and likely wants to be doing a slow maneuver if he lives.

Do not underestimate the power of R4-D6. That droid help me in curcial times.

Wait a second. How would triggering R4D6 be meaningless assuming you've got IA? The droid can cancel hits down to two incoming and then once those results would be converted into cards you could eject the droid to stop a card as well.

It may that if R4D6 triggers the first time Biggs is hit the two [boom] results remaining will just take out Shields but if you are going to suffer cards after that you can, and probably even SHOULD, eject the droid to stop one. There may be no guarentees that R4D6 is ever going to trigger to convert [boom] results into Stress tokens but if that is all the shots you were taking the droid could lets you survive TWO big blast before going down.
