Brand new to x-wing, looking for a starters demo list

By Guest, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Hi,

I'm just now recovering from my WHFB withdrawals and after ... 20 years? of playing long drawn out campaigns with hundreds upon hundreds of minis I now want a fast paced minimum mini game ... even 40K has too many minis for me at this point.

So I read about x wing, watched some youtube, checked out the FFG tutorial and stalked this forum for a week and now I've made my opening purchases.

Already bought:

- 2 Force Awakens core sets.

- A tie fighter blister

- X wing blister.

My goal - to have enough of two different squads to entice others to buy their own stuff. While money isn't necessarily an issue for my own collection I really don't want to bankroll someone else's fleet (My nephew has an entire horde of Beastmen and Skaven all on my tab. I don't want to get into his CSM). With that said, I need enough to entice people to play but not scare them away with too much extra noise.

Is what I've got enough for a demo game at this point?

- 4 FO TIE fighters

- 1 Plane Jane TIE fighter and whatever pilot cards come with it,

- 2 X wings from the new set - T-70?

- 1 Plane Jane X-wing and whatever pilot cars come with it.

I know there's no uber list here and nothing tourney worthy but the goal is to make up a list for a quick little demo game that gets other people hooked into it.

Thanks for the feedback in advance.

I'm in a similar position as you. 3 Core sets, 2 blue/1 red. but none of the individual x-packs. Most of the folks here are better at list building than I but let me give you my thoughts on running limited lists.

1) YES! You definitely have enough to entice others to play. Nothing says you have to play 100 pt. death matches. 40-60pt. games work great when you are still learning what everything does. I would also recommend playing the missions that come with the Core Set. Lots of fun and it makes list building a lot easier.

2) Now for lists: Poe, Wedge, and ? is the obvious starting place here. Blue Ace is good but her lack of EPT hurts. Since you are just starting out that is not as big a deal.

Poe w/ R5, Wired

Wedge w/BB8, Wired

Blue Ace w/R5-K6, Weapons Guidance, Proton Torp.

3) On the Imp side it is most likely going to be an all-star list if you are trying to get to 100pt.

Howlrunner w/ Swarm Tactics

Omega Ace w/ Determination

Zeta Ace w/ Expert Handling

Epsilon Leader w/ Weapons Guidance

Omega Sq. Pilot w/Markmanship

Neither of these lists are really competitive and both are using sub-optimum cards but I don't think that is what you were asking. My goal was getting close to 100 pt. and make the ships you have hit hard. Now if you want to proxy cards (although I find that more confusing for brand new players) that opens things up greatly. I will let better players create proxy lists using the models you have.

Most of us understand being new, having limited ships, upgrades, and budgets, and trying to find other players. It will happen. There is a reason X-wing is known as plastic crack. Good luck and have fun.

Edit: Forgot to add the most important part. WELCOME ABOARD!

Go with whatever you want for introductory games. If you're both relatively inexperienced then list building isn't the point; its practicing your maneuvers that will make you more of a threat. Core sets alone give you nearly nothing in terms of variety. I would advise you to pick up Imperial Aces and Rebel Aces next. Just the red core set and those two expansions are enough to have meaningful decisions both in list building and in combat, without swamping your friends with hundreds of upgrade cards (you'll have something like 30 - 40 different cards).

I did just this and got into the game with out blowing my mind... I would also suggest an original core set and an iconic ship like the falcon for rebels and the lambda/firespray for inperials. The lambda has a notoriously bad dial, but with practice, once you get to the Awing, it's a space walk.

Thanks to both of you.

I see what you're saying about learning the game, I think we will play through the scenarios that the core game provides a few times to really get the hang of flying, actions, combat, etc. Having just played my first game this evening I see it's not a steep learning curve, everything is straightforward and I can see why this has gotten so popular.

I'll want to expand a bit for sure in the coming weeks.

Imperial and rebel aces next? Sounds good to me. I think the lack of variety actually makes learning the game a bit easier from a total noob standpoint, seems kind of obvious really. I'll want to get the inquisitor though since the whole Sith thing is right up my alley.

Thanks again!

Yoda Man - we posted same time. Thanks for the suggestion, at this time though I'm going to avoid the bigger ships - my nephew will probably force my hand on that with Slave-1 though. He's got a thing for Boba.
