A-wing Withdrawals

By R22, in X-Wing

I play a ton of Tycho + Experimental Interface + PTL and Jake Ferral + PTL. My group just plays for fun so it's not like I'm looking for competitive lists. Switched it up and I played a game with X-wings and Y-wings.

Oh my God. How do the rest of the alphabet fighters do it? It felt like crawling on my knees and elbows. Like I was flying a boulder with a fatty liver or running with ankle weights. Except they're full body ankle weights. And my shoes were steel toed boots. While running in mud on a planet with 3x the gravity of Earth. I needed to spin an A-wing maneuver dial for a few minutes after the game just to clean it out of my system.

I may need help.

Might make your addiction worse, but you should really spam Tycho and get him out of your system before BMST drops.

I can't remember the last time I ran a Rebel list without at least one A-Wing. They go with everything, especially the Green Squadron Crackshot/Adaptability variety.

how do you think Q-Wing pilots felt?

throw up every time they attempt to move that thing...

you replace freedom of movement via action with freedom of movement via weapon

aka, turrets for Ys and Bigg's ability for Xs (don't matter where you face as long as Biggs is dying and your important pilots are not :P )

example (with ARCs and Biggs because I havn't played a Y in ages):

what do I do here? K-turn? pfft

Funny, my thoughts when flying A-wings are typically "How do you do any damage with this peashooter."

a separate issue :P

the answer is:

1.) Norra Wexly's ability (w/mandatory tailgunner)

2.) damage? but these new acrylic stress tokens are so shiny!!!!

I really like those Arc Fighters

X-Wing as a game never ceases to surprise me, over the years I have written off a number of ships for various reasons and I really didn't start rediscovering how useful older ships can be until you mix up the match types. At 100 points standard timed match up, yeah, a lot of ships and gear falls out. The factors involved, the point value, the default objective "kill everyone", point scoring considerations, timed game etc.. all these factors sort of narrow what is viable. But as soon as you open it up to say 150 point games, or lower it to say 60 point games, alternative mission types, epic play... many of these old ships really shine all of the sudden.

You mentioned X-Wings and I found that in Epic play for example when you can afford to load them out a bit more and leverage the devastating jousting and combination of Huge ship support like the Corvettes double coordinate, man.... X-Wings are lethal. They are able to sustain prolonged fights, create frustrating combinations, avoid collision thanks to much wider speed options. I think its true with Y-Wings as well, that sustainability, to be able to take multiple volleys in a fight is super vital in Epic. Ships like Interceptors, Tie Fighters, Advanced Ties, Inquisitors and many of the imperial speedy toys struggle hard because while you can arc dodge in normal matches like a pro, in the nutty, obstacle rich environment of epic play many of these ships crazy ability to dodge shots is horribly compromised. Their movement options are far more limited and they are as likely to blow themselves up as they are to blow something else up. Epic play is a proper shootout and un-shielded ships relying on agility and arc dodging have a very short lifespan especially when they have target lock / Focus coming out of multiple ships from all manner of angles.

X-Wings for the win in epic.

Gotta be said, that is some beautiful positioning of Biggs. Ryad and Vessery are going to be rightfully peeved, especially when it's far from obvious that it'd have worked. :)

Fickle is crafty, fickle is wise, fickle knew someone who went to gencon where they presold them.

Go away and do not return. Me and my a wings are just going to sit in a corner, rocking back and forth, until you leave, foul person.

By taking six of them with Crackshot.

Or, as a store champs around here was won, by flying VI Jake, VI Tycho + Jan Ors... and shoving six-die Prockets down Soontir's throat.
