What to put in the other half of the Hanger?

By Paul7926, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Hi folks.

I've been playing X-wing for a little while (Since May 4th this year!) and have concentrated on Imperial stuff. I'm no real expert but I can put a few imperial lists together that I like to play. I tend to be a 'trip aces' fan swapping the individual aces around for some variety.

Now there is talk locally of a 'Hanger Bay' style tournament which means that whatever I take I'm going to need a second list to accompany it.

Is there anything I can do with my very limited collection of Rebel ships? I don't mind needing a purchase or maybe two but a 5 A-Wing list with all the trimmings is out I'm afraid. Ideally it would complement a 'trip aces' list but at the moment anything seems like a stretch. The only thing I've come up with so far is this (and it's probably just rubbish).

[Collection totals in signature so you have an idea of what I own]

PILOTS

Nera Dantels (35)
B-Wing (26), Proton Torpedoes (4), Proton Torpedoes (4), Deadeye (1), Guidance Chips (0)

“Red Ace” (36)
T-70 X-Wing (29), R2-D2 (4), Comm Relay (3), Integrated Astromech (0)

Gemmer Sojan (29)
A-Wing (22), A-Wing Test Pilot (0), Proton Rockets (3), Stealth Device (3), Crack Shot (1)

Your current list is going to have a tough time against aces. Also, once Nera goes down, the rest of your list has very limited damage output.

Here's what I would recommend that's similar to your list (upgrades you don't own are in red)

Poe Dameron [R2-D2, VI, Autothrusters, Weapons Guidance]

Biggs Darklighter [R5-X3, Integrated Astromech] << never use R5-X3, it's just the only 1-pt mech you have :P

Nera Dantels [FCS, Plasma Torpedoes, Extra Munitions, Deadeye, Guidance Chips]

With Biggs and Nera on the board, Poe will be killed last every game. That lets you go to town with Weapons Guidance and his ability, generating 3 hits every turn unless you roll 2+ blanks. Assuming Poe makes it to the late-game, his regen and points cost alone (40 points) gives you a solid chance of winning. Biggs is important because it buys Nera (and Poe) more time to get her ordnance off. Plasma, EM, & FCS is way better value than 2 x Proton Torps, so try to acquire those cards if it fits your budget.

Against aces, you now have a PS10 ship on top of Nera. Against big ships, those Plasma Torpedoes can knock off up to 5 shields in one shot.

Both Plasma Torpedoes and Extra Munitions come in the TIE Punisher or K-wing pack. The K-wing also gives you 2 TLTs and a very solid option in Miranda for your Rebel collection, so maybe that's the better choice especially in the long-term. TIE Punishers are incredibly fun, but unfortunately too costly to be competitive.

Hope that helps!

Helps a lot Zerotc thanks.

It's not that my second list has to be good against aces it's more that if my first list is Imp aces then I don't really want a second list that is weak to the same things that my first list is weak to.

In breaking news from the TO we are apparently allowed two list from the same faction so I may just put together either a TIE defenders build or a mini TIE swarm plus something to flood the board with cheap ships. On the other hand if I can source a K-Wing before the event it would be worth it just to have a better Rebel list available in the future.

This seems suitably not aces....

PILOTS

Academy Pilot (12) x 2

Epsilon Squadron Pilot (15) x 2

“Howlrunner” (20)
TIE Fighter (18), Swarm Tactics (2)

“Omega Leader” (26)
TIE/fo Fighter (21), Comm Relay (3), Juke (2)

Seems like a logical counterpart to your triple aces!

The first thing you must consider when making your second list is what your first list cant beat. Then make your second list fill in that gap.
