Will this be canon characters only?

By Wired4War, in Star Wars: Destiny

For those who have a better sense of the cards that will be coming, is everything from canon material, or is there stuff from legends as well? If it is canon only, does that include clone war and rebels and recent books, or just the 7 movies and counting?

Well, of the material in the first set, it appears to be based on canon material, but with liberties taken in that some of the artwork depicts characters not seen in the movies but who might exist somewhere in the galaxy.

Probably just the latest Disney canon.

But who can tell what will make it from the last canon; a new Disney canon Thrawn novel has been announced, so some old favourites may appear.

Thrawn has been shown in Rebels, so he is canon.

The EU is in all likelyhood done as far as FFG is concerned. FFG must get approval for every Star Wars related thing they make. LFL has absolutely no reason to approve any EU content. It undermines what they have been doing to do so.

The new canon includes the seven main movies, the clone wars movie and 2008 series, rebels and books (including comics I'm pretty sure) published after April 25th 2014. in the future It'll include all of the new movies and presumably* any new video game that has its own story line (other than SWTOR). As Scottie said I'd bet against any characters that don't appear in this canon turning up in this game.

*I don't know if they even intend to make any such games, it would be kind of tragic in my mind if they didn't though.

Honest I believe so, and that's what I would like (Unpopular opinion) I just hope they go past the films to other canon martial stuff. (as I'm sure they well) canon has a lot of good things I would like to see in this game.

They've certainly branched beyond the films with their other games.

i'd hope they woudlnl't totally ignore stuff that has a low chance of being rewritten. The old republic would be fun to get stuff from .

It will all depend on how far the license will let them go. If they get the approval from the licensing company to do EU, I think they would go there. However, it sounds like since Disney has taken over, they are trying to distance themselves from much of the old EU material, and it would make sense if they wanted to continue that for them to not approve any material other than what is currently considered cannon. Disappointing as well, because I really love the Old Republic setting.

There's always the possibility that they will recanonize a lot of the popular EU characters and storylines. We are getting a new take on Thrawnin Rebels, how long before we see Mara Jade? The Old Republic? I have to believe they have grand plans to bring more of that stuff back in (possibly in different ways) to the canon. They aren't just going to wipe out 30+ years of EU building without a plan to rebuild it.

While I do agree with you, none of that is FFG's call, and from my personal standpoint, if it's going to be strictly canon, I wouldn't want them to venture into uncharted territory with characters that might never reappear. A consistent approach is my bread and butter when it comes to this sort of thing.

The "they" that I meant was Disney; if Disney recanonizes stuff and starts adding new stuff and old EU stuff to the universe, then if this game is canon only, FFG could use it.

I understood that. I'm saying that regardless of what Disney decides to do with Legends content, FFG can't act on it until that information is either publically available, or shared privately with FFG.

With consent new content coming out in canon, I don't see the need to go back in Legends. If Lucasfilm ever decides to promote legends my preference would be in a new different game. It would make things more unique imo. Having said that I doubt Lucasfilm will approve anything Legends related in the immediate future for a while.

Looking at the card list, there's only 20 to 25 characters in the initial set. There's loads of characters that could come out in the future without even having repeats, even only mining the movies themselves. Here's a list I came up with in about 5 minutes just from the top of my head that could fill another set, avoiding duplicates:

  • Jar-Jar Binks (live with it, he is canon)
  • Obi-Wan Kenobi
  • Chewbacca
  • General Hux
  • Wedge Antilles
  • Bossk
  • IG-88
  • Palpatine
  • General Rieekan
  • Unkarr Plutt
  • Sebulba
  • Admiral Piett
  • Grand Moff Tarkin
  • Wickett
  • General Tarpals
  • Captain Panaka
  • Bib Fortuna
  • Boba Fett
  • Snap Wexley
  • Nien Nunb

So, there's 20 more for another set, and that's not even touching Clone Wars or Rebels. Not to mention some of the really cool new characters being introduced in the books, like Admiral Sloane.

I'd say they have plenty to choose from before they even needed to touch on duplicates, though they probably will to give different play styles using the same characters.

There are so many more well known canon characters. Lando jumps to mind. Bala-tik is in the base set so why not have the guys from Kanjiclub as well?

And they're coming out with a new movie every year for the foreseeable future, so this game shouldn't have to reuse the same content over and over.

They already have canon games including Star Wars Uprising that is a mobile RPG like game.

They've certainly branched beyond the films with their other games.

Not so much of late however. I would assume for a brand new game canon only.

i plan on having a prequel deck with as many gungans as possible

Sounds like everyone tends too agree that legends will be left out. This is my preference anyway. I'm not a huge fan of clone wars, but really enjoying the rebels series. It has definitely been incorporated into xwing and armada. It will be interesting to see FFG art of those cgi cartoon characters like Ezra or Sabine.

'Tis your lucky day! Since one thing that stays constant about FFG is that they use the same art for every game, I can 100% guarantee you that when we see Sabine in Destiny, this will be her art. Fortunately, I think it is pretty great, if not a little dark. But you can see that for the X-Wing card they significantly lightened the palette.

They used different art for her card in the LCG (which is worse in my opinion). So they have options on which to use.

Ah here I go giving guarentees and someone has to prove me wrong! I am not familiar with the LCG, but if it was released around the time Rebels debuted that might make sense, since their more recent releases have seen a DRAMATIC improvement in the quality of the art. Probably because X-Wing is making them so much dang money they can afford to have things look nice.

Nope, her card just came out this week. ;)
