Third-party Dice - a potential alternative

By Flamebeast, in X-Wing Rules Questions

You have yet to prove that the FFG dice have caused any real harm in tournament games. Before FFG would consider changing the rule, there would have to be a solid case showing that people are at a disadvantage by using FFG dice compared other people. That the dice in question are having a controllable impact on the game.

FFG has a vested interest in seeing people use their dice, so you have to prove that allowing 3rd party dice would be a benefit to them by making the OP events better in some way.

When was it proven that the FFG template caused any real harm in tournament. FFG also have a vested interest in seeing people use their template. Also when was it provent the OP events were better in some way with third party template.

Yet we can use third party template.

I don't think anyone has said that FFG dice need to be casino-perfect, but is it really too much to ask that they at least put enough QC in there to make sure they're not bubbly as **** (especially for prize dice)? Tritex manage it, why not FFG? It's no more complex than having a sufficiently sensitive scale to make sure they're all the same weight, or just looking at them in the case of the translucent/transparent ones.

Ultimately it would be more reasonable to allow third-party dice if both players agree, rather than a blanket ban. If they continue to churn out prize dice, people will keep paying for the chance to win them, and people will always buy Core Sets rather than dice packs, so I don't buy the argument that it somehow threatens them financially either.

FFG's template is cardboard and probably cost about 15c to print. What vested interest do they have in having people use it? If they had a vested interest, they would produce their own and insist they be used in tournament play. However, they don't.

I think people miss the point entirely on purpose... It is not because they are "acceptable" to push ship around that they are suddently flawless. They are not good or "normal" dice, they are cheap, really cheap even for gaming dice. I can easly get clear dice for 10$ that have no bubble and are in a better plastic quality. So removing my choice of using custom dice is "dicey" at best when you see the quality of their dice... If the money was an argument, they would also limit Template and force us to rebuy starting kit when they are brokenĀ...

We are having a conversation about the legitimacy of banning custom made dice. And I find the argument that they control the "quality" of the dice or that you could cheat with custom dice bogus, when their dice are far from controlled balance, or that you could anyway load their dice without anyone noticing.

I have no evidence for this, merely conjecture. But I think if someone wants to spend 45 hours rolling opaque dice trying to find the ones that are statistically more likely to roll the desired results...that they would end up with a higher level of competency at the tournament level if they used that work-week+ practicing flying and stuff.

In the event that two players are equally matched (say at the 7th Swiss round of worlds 2016) the end result can - and often is - determined by a single roll of the dice. In that instance, a 5% advantage over your opponent is a huge advantage, and added to every other roll of the game where you get a slight advantage becomes an enormous challenge to overcome. I myself would be buying 10 packs of dice and sorting through them for the "best" if it weren't for my sense of fair play.

In casual play, nobody cares.

Casual store tournament? Who cares.

Yearly Store tournament? Hmm, maybe.

Regionals? Gives a distinct advantage.

Nationals/Open? Cheating, plain and simple (assuming you know about it).

Worlds? Just no.

The high rollers table might have $10000 t stake on a single dice roll, but the Australian Nationals (for example) has a several thousand dollar prize that will come down to a single die roll too. 3rd part dice don't solve the problem, because FFG dice will always take preference in the rules, so i believe the best solution is for FFG to provide a set of tested dice for use on the top table for higher tier tournaments.

I like my dice like my beer - bubbly.

I'd just like it if my dice floated some results to the top once in a while, instead of blanks.

Funny thing, but when I really went with the salt-glass method, all greens went blank-up.

And most of reds came focus-up >_>

Is there a blacksmith who can make SOLID STEEL DICE OF DOOM? xD

I never said someone can cheat in an effective way. I said the FFG dice are really cheap, so it is weird of them to not let people bring custom dice when the FFG dice are not even that regulated in the first place. Also because of their poor manufacturing, they are very easly modifiable to load them.

Maybe you think that a Robot rolling even a thousand time is enough to see behavior in dice, but I can garantee you that the FFG dice would not be legal for casino play. Bubble in dice are not acceptable. Yes, for a table top game where the 5% bias it may give is not enough to worry.

But that does not mean their dice are good or properly manufactured...

FFG dice are cheap dice, and yes, it is possible that some of them give biased result.

Casino dice aren't even legal for Casino play after about 4 hours of use. Unless you're expecting people to buy a new set of dice every tournament, you're not going to have casino quality.

I'm pretty sure my dice are broken. I never roll evades.
