Latari Elves confirmed as third playable faction

By Nalim, in Runewars Miniatures Game

I bet we see a lot of neutral units, like dragons and beastmen released for this game during wave 2 or 3

Dragons would be awesome! They did it for battlelore...

How on Earth did I not notice that on the demos I've watched!?

I'm sure if the creature/hero/whatever that appeared in Battlelore will also appear here so we could just about "confirm" other armies. I just don't expect them to be arriving any time soon. I fully expect the first wave just to fill out the humans and undead and even future expansions may even further that.

Yes, but there is a difference between "Hey, this game takes place in the same universe, so hopefully we'll get more armies" and having a core unit specifically reference another faction. The latter is a much stronger indication of inclusion than just being in the same story world.

It's too bad Latari will be awhile away, at least wave 2. And that doesn't make any sense as to why they'd wait so long.

I reckon that stuff will be Wave 0 stuff. The core set is great but it's a mini-game. When you only have 2 heroes and 3 types of unit each side with no upgrades it may get stale fast, ala Core set of Armada, however Armada Wave 0 also came with expansions for each of the ships if I remember correctly, and they contained upgrades that weren't in the core set.

I hope FFG release some extra factions for this to begin with instead of 'testing the water' with 2 factions first, a big draw for new players is having a race/faction to identify with and Humans/Undead aint gonna cut the mustard compared to other mini-war games out there.

I hope it came out with the initial game but not shown anything only in the letter of Kari Wraithstalker are mentioned I think the basic game will be with the support units (heroes, musicians etc ..) and on the next wave the elves and with Good luck the Uthuk ^_^

I think perhaps we can get a unit of, say Latari archers, that are released before the true "Latari Expansion" and this card could be the justification for doing so. It could be a way to introduce something like Skirmisher rules without force feeding into the Daqan or Undead faction where it might not fit. Obviously speculation, but the inclusion of that ability on a hero in the core set leads me to believe it will be useful at some point in the very early game.

I suspect we will get a Latari unit in advance of the full faction.

I'm not sure if it's a good idea to release one elf unit and nothing else for their faction:

"Here have some awesome elfs, oh what is that you want to play them as your faction that's alright just wait half a year or so before doing it but hey you can buy multiples of this unit now so you don't have to do it later"

;)

When you only have 2 heroes and 3 types of unit each side with no upgrades...

I suspect we will get upgrades in the core set. The only reason they weren't in the demo games was so players could get a grasp on the base mechanics, the same reason they left out flanking.

Really hope they don't make us wait that long for new factions!

The early unit of of Elves makes a lot of sense. Maybe they'll focus first on increasing options for the two core factions before launching new ones.

I also love that they're called Elves and not ******* Aelves

I personally say a elven unit without a elven faction doesn't make that much sense, as said someone sees them, likes them and wants to play them but he hast to wait some months before more are out is really bad and you should increase options for factions first with their own units and you should have some solid options of own units before releasing "support" unist from other factions.

But that is just my opinion, so i hope they release some new units for both factions and then release one or two new factions with some units for them.

So, on a related note, I'm guessing that each faction will have a character (or 3) that gives them access to a non unique unit from another faction. Kari gives the Daqan elves, I'm betting the Traitor mentioned allows the Undead to take a unit of Daqan

I don't know much about the background but couldn't the traitor be the leader of the Undead, i read somewhere that he once was a good human.

Yep. Waiqar the Undying...AKA "the head lich in charge"....

The idea of Latari elves (which I know nothing about, in fact, I know nothing about this setting so if anyone has any resource recommendations that I can read up on lore for it I would be much appreciative) being a support for Daqaan at first reminds me of when Slave-1 started out as an Empire ship in X-wing and then when they decided to make scum its own faction they had to release separate cards to play Slave-1 as scum. This just allows them to do the same thing but with Latari growing into their own faction, my guess would be around wave 2...

There are quite a few posts on the forums about background. Forum member Toenail did an excellent write-up here: https://community.fantasyflightgames.com/topic/227517-a-brief-overview-of-the-setting-for-those-new-to-terrinoth/

You can find a little more background by reading the Runewars (boardgame) rule book's introduction, and to a lesser extent, the Banners of War expansion rules.

In my opinion, the best piece of work for background on the 4 major factions is found at the end of the Rune Age rule book (pages 18-19).

Thanks!

It's not really the same, here I need to use Kari Wraithstalker to use one none unique unit of the Latari Elves, in X-Wing I can always use the imperial Firespray without using Vader for example, something like that in X-Wing would be if for example Vader and Han would allow you to take one none unique Scum pilot into your imperial/rebel list (that could be fun).

I'm not saying it is the same i'm just saying that it is reminiscent of that situation, Imperial Slave-1 just seems like they wanted to throw an iconic character in the game then eventually made the whole faction and made a second version to make the imperial that is just a bounty hunter become and scum character that makes sense.

Baron Zachareth is a traitor himself. He gained much power in the council, only for his plot to release the Dragonlord entombed in the Shadow Rune was uncovered. This quote likely is when he "accidentally" "ran into some issues". He has been on the decline of late, even working alongside Splig and Belthir as an underling in Lady Eliza Farrow's plot to take over Saradyn.
