PbP Pitch

By Blackbird888, in Star Wars: Age of Rebellion RPG

Is anyone interested in participating in an Old Republic-era PbP? I'm thinking of adapting the Star Wars d20 adventure Peril on Naboo converted to the setting; I'm thinking of the Great Sith War against the Krath (Tales of the Jedi), but we could use the Mandalorian Wars (Knights of the Old comic series), the Jedi Civil War (Knights of the Old Republic game), the Great Galactic War (pre-The Old Republic), or the following Galactic War (late game The Old Republic).

I'm also thinking of a primarily--or maybe solely--AoR-based game. I'm erring on sticking to only one CRB to start, but we can talk about that.

If anybody is interested, I'm only willing to accept six PCs. I'm going to have to be firm on that bit.

Players (6/6):

  1. Massan, male Klatooinian Sentinel/Artisan (played by Kymrel).
  2. lanky316
  3. Osfmor Novafall, male Human (Naboo) Soldier/Commando (played by jnrschulz).
  4. Kallukorus "Kallu" Zatoq, male Zabrak Hired Gun/Enforcer (played by Cheeech)
  5. Kanti Yanaba, female Twi'lek Ace/Hotshot (played by Comrade Cosmonaut)
  6. Kael

That happens to be my favorite era so I'd be interested. Though no Jedi? :(

Would it be just the Naboo adventure or a continuing game?

I could be interested upon hearing some more solid info.

A mixed group is still on the table. I guess if the majority decides to go for F&D careers, then we could switch to that style of game, and likewise for EotE careers. The only thing about this era is it seems everybody just defaults to their characters being Jedi, and I like Force-sensitive characters who aren't automatically Jedi.

And I'd hope to continue after the adventure, certainly. It would depend on which war gets chosen, but there are a few other adventures I'd like to use. The Peril on Naboo adventure looks to be a good start, as it's a planetary invasion, with a straightforward escape sequence and a retaliatory battle. A few changes and it can be slipped into just about all of those conflicts.

And a few more details on how we'll start:

  • Beginning level, not Knight level.
  • Starting bonuses (extra experience and/or credits) will be chosen like they are in F&D.
  • I have all books and supplements except for the AoR Beginner Game, so all gear/species/specs are accessible. Feel free to even use the new specs/species from the Forged in Battle spoiler threat, just not the gear (until the book hits).
  • Whatever gear that can be afforded may be chosen, as long as it's not restricted, with no rarity cap. Certain cheap, restricted items may be waived if they make enough sense for the character, such as lockpicking tools for a infiltration type. Obviously, due to the era, certain things may need to be renamed to be lore-friendly, but we can work through that.
  • We'll have to work out if we want to use Obligation, Duty, Morality, or a mix. I'm currently inclined towards Duty being the primary system.

What sort of timezone would sessions be played at? I've not done anything like this before but would consider it if it was at reasonable hours for me in the UK!

You just post when it's feasible. I should be able to catch it. We'll probably be playing in multiple time zones anyway, so everybody will have to chime in when they're capable.

I don't know the module (which I suppose is a good thing), so I wonder about the premise. From the fact that you mention using Duty I surmise the group would belong to some Republic-affiliated group.

I would be interested in playing. I have a character I played briefly in another PbP that never made it past infancy that I would love to get a second chance to play. You can take a look at Massan and see if he would fit your game. I would need to fiddle with the background a little, drop the obligation for duty and so on, but this should give you a reasonable idea what he would look like.

He does use a career out of F&D (Artisan), but is not a Jedi. Completely untrained, and of course way to old to start any Jedi training. I imagine him as Force-Sensitive, but not massively so, using the Force only in limited ways. He starts the game only with the Sense power and the Mental Tools talent.

He is a committed gadget freak, always looking for the latest and greatest new toy to come out. This does not include lightsabers. Standing right next to someone and trying to hit them with a lightsaber sounds mad to him, better to use a blaster at range and hide when people try to shoot back.

His main role in the group would be a slicer and a mechanic, although he can defend himself with a pistol if needed. If we don't have a better medic I'll keep the rank in Medicine he has at the moment, if we do have someone more qualified I'll drop that for something more fun.

The adventure runs concurrent to The Phantom Menace, starting with the invasion of Theed and ending with the Battle of Naboo. I'll replace the Trade Federation with the appropriate invading force, tweak a few other details, and revamp the conclusion, but Republic-affiliated is correct. Independent is also perfectly fine, as long you don't mine them throwing their lot in with the Republic. The module seems very simple, beginner, with few surprises or twists, and it seems like a good place to start a game.

The character looks great. The only thing you'd need to change, other than maybe a few name changes in the backstory, is change the name of the Quicktrigger pistol to something else, probably something generic*. I'll sign you up, if you don't mind. As far as Obligation goes, for the moment, just use it as backstory development.

Also, in general, I know that some of the species in the books technically shouldn't be in the era (such as those that made first contact only a few hundred years before the Empire), but I'm not going to sweat those details much. All species are accepted.

Excellent. I'll make the necessary changes soon-ish ;)

I'll be absent for a few hours, so don't get discouraged if I don't immediately reply, as is my usual norm.

I'll throw my hat in for this if you don't mind. I'm thinking of a Chadra-Fan Sharpshooter at the moment but will think around equipment options when we know for sure what sort of system you're using (i.e Duty/Obligation) and number of players. Work out what sort of armanents and so on will suit him and how much duty/obligation it has to play with for extra cash, sniper rifles aren't amongst the cheaper options!

We're using the way F&D does starting bonuses. If you're not familiar with it, you just select one of the following options:

  1. +10 XP
  2. +2500 credits
  3. +5 XP and +1000 credits
  4. +/- 21 Morality, which would be applicable if you were a Force user.

There's now raising/lowering Obligation/Duty for more stuff, you just pick one.

It will be interesting to see a Chadra-Fan with a sniper rifle bigger than himself... Unless by sniper rifle you mean small-ish carbine :D

I would be interested. Thinking a bout being a member of the Naboo Security Force.

That sounds good. Such a character could easily fill the role of an Ace or Commander.

So I'm thinking of the setting will be during the Great Sith War/Krath Holy Crusades, against the Krath. Everybody okay with that?

And for any players wanting to play as Jedi (or get a lightsaber), you still need to stick with the affordable lightsaber weapon options, which encompasses the training saber, the training stick (Nexus of Power), and the ancient sword (If you go for this option, it would be a "Jedi sword" or "Force sword" or something; increase the HP by 1).

Also, I have a small number of house tweaks I'd like to implement. Only two are changes to any rules (Auto-Fire and the Pressure Point talent), and the rest are slight adjustments of weapon stats, most of which will probably never come up.

Sounds good to me. So would you be starting the game in 3997 BBY?

That sounds right.

I'd be interested in playing in this game. I feel like I'm playing loads of Jedi/force sensitives atm, so I'd steer away from that in this game. I'd probably play a Zabrak enforcer or Hutt politico. Whichever was the better fit

Just a reminder, we're using the F&D method for choosing bonuses, so you don't have to worry about adjusting duty numbers and you just pick one of the options, as mentioned in my above post. So, if you want the extra 1000 credits, you should have an extra 5 XP to work with as well.

Got it. Spent my 5 xp.

Blackbird, if you'd have me, I've got an idea for a character, but I am at work so I can't stat them up until later.

Like an old pulp serial character, they're a daring swoop racer who is expected to travel the globe galaxy for their career as a racer, but actually acts as a man in the field doing spy work for the government. Republic in this case.

Maybe Ace of some kind, or maybe Explorer.

Edit: Or Smuggler?! Charmer and Pilot over time would work, right?

Sounds good. I'd go Ace, but whatever.

That's five. I'll let Kael take the sixth spot, if 'e's still interested.

I'm thinking about how to alter the character's background. Could you tell us a bit more about what sort of agency we owe duty to?
