Miraluka

By Guest, in Star Wars: Force and Destiny RPG

I've seen enough threads to consider placing comments about the Miraluka species in this post, until such time as they appear in FFG books. This opportunity could be tomorrow, or never, but I grow weary of derailed threads about a species about whom we can only speculate. While speculation is fun, let's keep focus, or else everything becomes about the Miraluka; are they in THIS book, because they should be; are they in THAT book, because I think that is stupid; etc.

2's in everything (Near Human). Farsight basic power without the need to activate it, its always active. 100xp.

Hmmm...I dunno. I'd like to see a cleaner split between innate Force Powers and a species ability. For instance, the Kyuzo don't have the Enhance power up and running all of the time, yet they still jump like fiends. Besides, it may rain on the parades of other blind characters who do invest in the Force Power Farsight (for a whopping 5xp) for their own reasons.

Mikaluka: I'm a beginning MiraLucas. I am blind but I get the Farsight power for free!

Non-Miraluka: I'm an experienced navigator, with numerous smuggling runs and Rebel participation under my belt. I was blinded on a strange planet by cybernetic nexu. There, I learned to trust in the Force. Now, I can see beyond sight...

If FFG wants to steer clear of min/max munchkins, I'm hopeful that the MiraLucas are more robust than merely slapping a pre-existing template on them.

I've created a monster...and God help me, I like it!

Miraluka, the fiddly box.

2s across the board

Force perception: is not affected by lighting conditions and other environmental effects affecting vision (but still cannot see through walls). If in a place with no Force presence (arguably nowhere unless you include the Vong and their stuff), is effectively blind (see crit effect or make it even worse).

Starting XP: 100

You could let Suppress affect this vision, if you want to be mean.

With sincere honesty, I hope FFG does good by the blind community in real-life.

Marvel Comics advertises diversity with its latest titles, but abandons their characters in film. Sadly, this shell game arose from litigation from Kirby's estate. His heirs sought financial compensation for Kirby's creations that now appear in movies. To avoid large payouts, suddenly all of Marvel's main heroes changed dramatically, and embrace diversity. Make no mistake- this push wasn't solely out of a desire to connect with a broader fan base- Marvel dodged a lawsuit brought by its famous son.

When we expect to introduce blindness as a possible universal species trait, I hope FFG gives MiraLucas more compassion than what Marvel does for their characters.

Let's try a method used by KRKappel. Humans start at 110 XP and two free, non-career skill ranks. Redeem those two ranks for XP, so at the start we have 130 XP.

Ultimate Alien Anthology lists them as having low Dexterity, which would be translated here as Agility. Drop Agility to 1, redeem XP, and we're sitting at 150 XP. UAA lists them as having +2 Intelligence, so raise Intellect to 3 for 30XP.

We are now at 120 XP. Let's look at species abilities first.

UAA lists them as being quick to react, "despite their general lack of coordination, a Miraluka's reaction speed is superior to that of most species." The KotOR Campaign Guide does not give them this ability, and instead says "Miraluka have keen minds, but their reliance on the Force to perceive their surroundings prevents them from reacting quickly," which is almost the opposite. However, the "Quick Reaction" ability in UAA gives them a benefit to Initiative, which is Vigilance, not an Agility skill, but a Willpower skill. I can feel rather comfortable giving them a rank of Vigilance for 10XP.

110 XP. Now on to the Force Sight ability. "[The Miraluka's] ability to see through the Force allows them to sense their surroundings as though they could see normally, allowing them to attack and make skill checks without suffering penalties for blindness." That sound's like Farsight's base ability, except for this bit: "Using Force sight is a free action and costs a Miraluka no vitality points."

So, the revised Force Sight would read as follows: "Miraluka are blind to all wavelengths of light. However, they may see through the Force; Miraluka ignore the effects of blindness or darkness and see normally at up to short range."

Farsight is a 5XP purchase, but not needing a Force point to use it (and it's constantly active) can easily justify an additional 5XP. So that would come out to be 100 XP.

If you want to go lower, raise their strain threshold by 2, for 5 XP per point, bringing us down to 90 starting XP.
