Scoundrel talent tree

By Rosco74, in Game Masters

Hello

I just wonder if there is a mistake on the Scoundrel talent tree?

You have only 2 columns to advance, the 2 on the outer edges. You have to reach the last line, then switch to the inner columns and go all the way up... It is the only speciality with such a restriction ! On most others you always find connections somewhere in the middle of a column to switch.

Is it intended ?

Thanks

It is intended. There are a few trees very limiting in this kind of way, the FS Exile, Slicer and Infiltrator come to mind. In this case the idea is that there are 2 ways to become a talented smuggler, both are hard. But once you cross a certain threshold (the bottom row of the tree) there are talents much easier to learn. I think FFG look for ways to make "interesting" talent trees, and while this is a somewhat extreme version it's not far beyond others.

No mistake with the Scoundrel, as it's very much an intentional design decision with how the spec is laid out.

There's a number of specs that only have a couple of ways to advance further into the tree, and even a small handful that only have one major path of progression (Heavy from Dangerous Covenants/Forged in Battle and Gambler from Fly Casual for instance).

Considering the Smuggler career has (arguably and IMHO) the single most overpowered Signature Ability - Unmatched Fortune - in the game (-SET- any 3 dice one likes on any adjacent face 3 times per session for a single DP each time for the player -OR- any ally in medium range), having to fill in the corners isn't much of a factor, to my mind.

Combine that with Second Chances and Double or Nothing from Gambler and the result is just sickening...

Thank you for the clarification !

I don't use "FlyCasual" for the moment so the smuggler seems not too OP for me. But I can tell my players it's not a mistake in the tree atleast

Many trees are like that,

The Trader from the explorer tree needs to go down column 1 to unlock anything in column 3 to 4 for anything past row 1

The Heavy, needs to go down column 2 to row 4 then over 1 to column 1 to get to row 5 so they can get back up to row 4 in the other column

The Gambler has dedication as a 10 or 15 point talent, but to get it must got all the way down column 1 or 2 then over to row 4 and then all the way back up.

Infiltrator is by far the most extreme, there is only one route you can either start at the top right and work down to tier 5, the snake back up the tree one row at a time. The other way starts at tier 1 and snakes down to tier 5 then back up the right hand column. Only 2 tier 1 talents are outside this path optional, other than that the path is entirely linear with you taking the talents from one end or the other. So like this.
