Only been playing for one side?

By LordTesla, in Star Wars: Armada

So i surprised the guy working at my FLGS by telling him that I have yet to play a game as the Rebels. I honestly never have except once or twice doing the beginner game from the core set.

How many of you guys have only played one side?

Do you think there is a benefit to playing both?

I've never played a single game as Rebels. Heck, the only Rebel ships I've bought have been for cards.

Though if the Imperials don't get a little more flexibility soon that might change. And I don't mean choosing between ISDs and Demolisher based lists. I mean some actual friggin choice as to how they play.

I have only played imps a handful of times

Inderdictor is a great flanker

I play both side, but since most players around here play Imperial, I play Rebels more often than not. What can I say, I prefer thematic battles.

I've only played Rebels. When my buddy and I started playing, he defaulted to Imps and I to the Rebellion, just based on personality. I like a lot of what the Imps can do, but I have no desire to ever pilot Demolisher. And when I've got Lando-Admonition, why would I need to? When Rieekan let's you fly Wedge, Dutch, and Luke? I'm good.

I've always been a thematic list builder myself. I also find myself never taking Demolisher, I just don't like the look of the glad on the table

Oh I also don't like the look of it, but I'm betting mine involves being on the receiving end of it so often as opposed to aesthetics, haha!

To answer your second question. Yes, I think there is a benefit to playing both.

The best way to know how a ship work is to play with it. It helps you see his strenghts while building a list and playing with it, but it also helps you see the weaknesses.

But there is two school of thought: some players prefer to build a fleet and practice with it against every possible list. Others, like me, prefer to experiment with every ship in the game and every kind of list, and try some combos by trial and errors. I will sometime design and play with a fleet (or a squadron in X-Wing) knowing that I will probably lose with it, but I do it anyway because I found a combo or a trick that might just work. But then again, I'm also the kind of player that have as much fun designing the fleet than playing it, sometimes killing time on Armada Warlords.

I only played rebels for a long time (holdover from X-Wing and/or my pathological need to play the good guys).

Then I tried playing with an ISD, demolisher and assorted raider/squadrons...it was so glorious...

I want to stay loyal to the rebellion, hopefully a liberty and some flotillas can keep me strong until the Phoenix Home hits.

I only ever play Rebel scum when demoing a game, and only if the new player wants to play Imperial. I do own everything, not only for cards but for demo purposes. Which is coming in handy in this hinterland called southwest Florida.....

no rebel scum here! Long live the Emperor.

Good to see that all you Empire players are true servants of the Emperor and never play as Rebel scum!

I collect for both, but I've been stubbornly playing Empire since the start of wave 2 to find a list I like. I kind of feel it's easy/fun to construct for the Rebels... ran some TR-90s recently and was impressed at the amount of damage they kick out. Plus, one of the other regulars in the area regularly takes Rebels, and I'm impressed with what he comes up with. In fact, in the SF Bay Area nearly every other player out there flies Rebels, because they're more interesting than the Rhymer/Demo happy Empire.

But this is it.

Imperials fly formations.

Rebels fly ad hoc.

So its just as odd when I see rebel formation flying. The two faction are different.

I fight for the Emperor.

Full stop.

When I started playing my local meta was 80% ish imperial and being a bit contrary in my thinking that made me immediately go rebels.

Now I honestly don't think I could switch to imperial, tried once or twice but missed the feel of a rebel fleets.

So... Down with the Empire! Freedom for all!

I play empire mostly because I like their captial ships more

It has been my impression that more players are drawn to the Empire at first than to the Rebels. I think it's because the Star Destroyer is probably the most iconic ship of the entire Star Wars Universe and we all want to play it at least once... just like when we were young playing with our Transformers... we all wanted to be Optimus Prime....

But then, some players bought a Core Set with a friend and one of them had to be the Alliance, and there is also guys like me that play rebels simply to bring some kind of balance in their group. Even though I'm currently playing rebels more often than not, at first the young boy in me wanted to play the Empire for that Star Destroyer!

About 90% Rebel. Occasional games as Imperials to test effectiveness of strategies (OpFor exercises)

I moved right before wave 2 dropped. When it released, everyone and their mother were running ISDs (because they look awesome). So, I defaulted to Rebels. I took that "meh" MC80 nobody want to play as and made it dance. Now I just don't care for how Imperials play.

I would really like to play Rebels but my playing partner never allows me :D

Only ever played Imperials during the Core Set. Down with the Empire! Die Imperial dogs! :)

I've always been a thematic list builder myself. I also find myself never taking Demolisher, I just don't like the look of the glad on the table

Get off my planet! She's a beautiful girl!
