Should the K-Fighter have come with a native boost, and if it had, would the generic ships and/or Talonbane Cobra have been around in competitive level play?

I don't think it's way out of line, but that stat line, with a boost, at those costs probably would have been seen as a slap across the face to the T-65, which is what I think they were basing their benchmark around.

I was actually just looking at the Manaroo/Fenn/Talonbane with Mindlink list. It's not so different than Palp Aces. Manaroo plays the roll of Palp and generates two focus tokens to the ship under fire (using her passing trix), which isn't as good as turning one green dice into an evade result, but it is one form of long range support. The bonus is that Manaroo is far more mobile and can block like a frakin' champ.

I can tell you from my vast experience with Fleet Officer supporting Alpha Squadron Pilots that there are many, many times when the extra focus tokens don't do anything. It can be very frustrating. But that doesn't mean it isn't worth trying!

I used to lament that I never got to trigger Talonbane's Range-3 defense bonus. Then I got to trigger it a few times in one week and I realized what my problem was -- I wasn't flying him! It's hard to trigger an ability on a ship you don't fly.

Unfortunately for Cobra, I just got a Fang Fighter in the mail from my brother today, so Cobra's getting the boot and Fenn is taking his place next to Bossk and Zuckuss. Thank you, Parakitor!
