Has anyone played Tarn Mison + R7?
Is he half way decent at dodging shots? What kind of squad would best suit him? I like odd ball builds so ... I am just guessing with him but would like to hear actual experience.

Edited by JadotchYep. He and R7 are a match made in heaven.
He can go nicely in just about any squad that you have 25 points to spare. I have used him with Poe and Red Ace; also with Biggs, Hobbie, and a Rookie Pilot.
I used it once. Opponent rolled three hits and I thought that should be worth a forced re-roll.
They re-rolled and got three hits again. Very annoying.
I've found Tarn's had his wings clipped a bit recently. Perhaps me following the timings wrong, but he's next to useless against a fully tooled Vader, or even an opponent that has him target locked.
Trying to recall how my last use of him went, but it never ended well, with his pilot talent and R7 basically useless.

Did you know that if you force your opponent to reroll attack dice then he may not reroll any of those dice again?

See, I know that this combo is supposed to give insurance that Tarn will have good survivability, but the last time I used him it went really bad.
I think I just need to better study the new flowchart. Last game was pre-FAQ, so I think it went something like me being attacked, opponent modifying dice somewhat and me unable to utilise Tarn.
I remember being confused because it made my 25 point pilot utterly useless. I think it was against an X1 Vader.
The defender modifies red dice before the attacker, so Tarn can force re-rolls before any of the attacker's focus/TL/abilities.
I don't think the latest FAQ or timing chart has any effect on Tarn that I can see.
I think I will try him out once the ARC-170 is out for the common people. I have him teamed up with 2 other 3 level pilots. It should be interesting. Thanks for the feedback!
Edited by JadotchIt's not a very dependable stability... Dice can be fickle. And even with a reroll the defender modifies attack dice FIRST. So if they took a focus token, they can then modify any focus results they reroll to.

Yep, the dice can be fickle. BUT, his value is in the psychology imposed on your opponent. I've had opponents opt out of good range 1 shots on Tarn in favor of range 3 shots on other ships, in part because of R7's ability but also not wanting me to have a TL with Tarn.

The reason it didn't work is because you didn't follow the rules (the new FAQ changes nothing).
The attacker rolls his dice. Then the defender (you, if you have Tarn) gets to modify the dice. Then the attacker gets to modify his own dice. So whichever dice you force to re-roll, your opponent may NOT re-roll those dice again (although he may spend a focus token, and if it was vader, he can still add a crit to the result if he has ATC).
So yeah, its not a 'perfect' defense, but it generally saves a point of damage here and there which can make a difference, especially if you put integrated astromech on him (to save him from a nasty crit).
Really, the reason Tarn doesn't see much play is not because the combo with R7 and his ability is bad (its pretty good in fact), its just because the X-wing and most of its pilots are suffering from power creep (palpatine, autothrusters, predator, crack shot, Dengaroo shenanigans, etc, etc have created a meta where certain ships just cannot compete, unfortunately). This will be the case until FFG realizes the true nature of the problem...
Edited by blade_mercurialI like Tarn as a stressbot vessel at 25 points when you can't quite fit stresshog in. He can stress and still aquire target locks while stressed if he's target of an attack.
Edit: also I pair him with Eaden Vrill so both at ps 3 is good so he can stress first and Vrill gets his bonus attack die.

eh...
see, Tarn's the guy you take when you want an X you can ram down your opponent's throat and DARE him to shoot or ignore. Really, there's no good option to deal with Tarn if he's staring you down at range 1
he's the Dirty Harry of X-wing

ARCs, meanwhile, are super expensive and fragile for their cost. They want Biggs, the guy who doesn't dare the opponent to shoot him but rather the guy that takes your opponent's say out of the matter
They want an X to die for them so they, the superior ships, can get some work done ![]()
The particular (future) list I was working on was Eaden Vrill (YT-2400) as a blocker/ace hunter plus intelligence agent, Braylen Stramm as a stressor with tactician, flachette torpedeos, R3-A2 and munition fail safe (if you get a lucky miss in range two, that is 3 stress tokens) plus someone else. I played around with a few a-wing builds, but anything under 30 points is really hard on the rebels. I already have a blocker, so an A and Z-95 weren't looking hot. Tarn came up.
I love finding weird lists that give people a second thought. Sometimes they aren't competive sometimes they beat a few of the top meta list.
Tarn with R7 and intergrated astromech is decent ship, but he needs a bit of cooperation from your opponent (last game i got hit hit crit -> R7 -> rerolled to hit hit crit, which was almost insulting). Just fly him aggressively and annoy some ship until it tries to shoot you. Then, if you live, return the favor. Good way to spend 25 pts in a list where Biggs can't help you.
