Rohan, meet Dunedain

By Seastan, in Strategy and deck-building

ah, good one! I had a similar idea just the other day. I was going to do almost this exact deck but I was going to use Idraen for silver lamp rather than Eowyn+ Snowmane and was considering Denethor instead of Elfhelm (side note, definitely first deck I've seen that makes really good use out of Elfhelm).

I also was thinking that Armored Destrier was a game changer where Dunedain were concerned. But it's just a fantastic card for pretty much anyone who wants to defend.

The Dori fellowship I'm currently playing has a Dori/Amarthiul/Elfhelm deck opposite a Caldara deck (Caldara/Eowyn/Arwen), and Armored Destrier has been amazing in it.

I might have to give this deck a try at some point.

Is it me or Elfhelm just became an amazing hero with the destrier?

i think the answer is... sometimes? It depends on who else is in your deck and what you are using it for. Elfhelm's ability benefits himself comparatively less than it *can* benefit other heros. 2 defense (increased to 3 with EH and Destrier) is only okay. If you throw in a hero like Amarthiul as Seastan did, it becomes a lot more compelling.

Beregond loves the Destrier as well, but really has no need for EH's extra +1 most of the time, so you're just as well off with any other Ld hero.

The destrier is really only useful to Beregond if there are multiple enemies to block. I think the destrier is most useful with a hero who can do something when readied even if there's only one enemy. Dain is probably the best in that case, because he can defend *and* buff attackers, but any of these guys can also counterattack for 3+ with Destrier:

Amarthiul

LeAragorn

LeImrahil

LeBoromir

Thorin

LoAragorn

TaTheoden

SpTheoden

Now none of those guys but Amarthiul have 3+ native defense, though all but Amarthiul have decent hp. That's why Destrier is also Dori's best friend. With Dori everyone but Thorin is defending for 4+ (5+ for Amarthiul), and you get a more-valuable-than-Dori action back. Add Elfhelm to the mix and you also boost every one of those heroes except LoAragorn, with Amarthiul boosted twice.

Since there's some good ways to give sentinel, you can also use destrier to give an action back to someone with special powers. Probably the best choices would be:

Elrond (Elven mail gives sentinel, 3+ defense, can use his action with Vilya)

Gandalf (Shadowfax gives sentinel, 3+ defense, can use his action to attack or Narya or word of command)

LoDenethor (dunedain signal gives sentinel, 3+ defense, can use his action to scry the deck.)

All three can be Burning Brand targets, though only Gandalf w. Narya gets an Elfhelm benefit.

definitely good ideas, although I find that having multiple enemies to block is... like almost all the time, at least in multiplayer. Personally, I wouldnt say no to a guy with 6 defense who can block twice and discard a shadow card while he's at it.

Yes, multiplayer dramatically increases the probability of two enemies to block, especially given a sentinel defender (though they have to be engaged with the same player to take advantage of the shadow card). Multiplayer also increases Elfhelm's value, since he can buff all the leadership defenders, spirit questers, and tactics attackers at the table with cheap and useful mounts. They just don't have synergy with each other, as you already noted.

Last week I received my nightmare packs for the Ring Maker cycle, and I was wondering about The Three Trials solo, with the new Destrier, I'll probably try it with the new Spirit Beregond.

The nice thing about Elfhelm + Amarthiul + Destrier is that that you are buffing both Amarthiul's defense and attack (which are both already pretty high) with one card, which happens to ready him after defending so that he can make use of both stats each turn. It really is the perfect combo.

Yeah, Amarthuil is probably the best combo with the destrier! I wish there were more heroes with ''native'' multisphere abilities.

My group had a laugh about potentially pairing a Dain/Elfhelm/X deck with an Oin/X/X deck. Give I am No Stranger, Snowmane or Steed of the Mark, and Herugrim to Oin for some fun laughs. 4 Willpower and 4 attack while Dain is standing. 8 attack with Herugrim. Probably a little gimmicky, but it would be quite funny if it triggered.

On topic, I really like that deck. I may put it together for a run and see how I like it.

If you're just after Herugrim shenanigans it'd be simpler to just put NaIaS and Herugrim onto Thorin.

Elfhelm does fit in nicely with Oin though, if you already want to have Oin for other reasons.

This looks very fun. A best of both worlds. Think this deck might be feasible to do a full campaign solo with? I think I might give it a go, been meaning to play campaign (or play in general haha) for a while now. :D

Probably, not sure what your plan is for the Balrog but you could throw in fortune or fate.

Depends, especialy if you play solo nightmare mode.

Solo yes, nightmare, no. It will be modified Easy mode where I remove the cards but don't give myself the extra resources (reverse sleazy mode? breezy mode?).
