Rebels and the A-wing trainer..

By That Blasted Samophlange, in X-Wing

So as season three is introducing the a-wing trainer, it seems to me, that is a great way to address the scale issue some find, and introduce something possibly fun.

First the scale, to understand what I say, take a look at the a-wing cockpit. It has two sections, this is important, remember this fact. Some feel that the a-wing model is too large, as the cockpits always looked cramped in the film. Now rebels seems to give us the larger a-wing. Now, remember the canopy with two sections? The forward part could be where the pilot sits. Behind the pilot, the second section of the canopy has been used to upgrade the engine. This is how the a-wing can be its current canon size and still have the 'cramped' feeling of the film, because the pilot is sitting in that first forward section

Now, remember the new a-wing that Ezra flies with Kanan as a passenger? Dave Filoni called it an a-wing trainer. So what if there was a title, called A-wing trainer. The pilot gets to sit in the front "cramped" section, the back section removes the proposed upgraded engine behind the pilot in the back section of the canopy for another seat. So here os what you get:

A-wing trainer.

0 points

A-wing only

You lose the boost action from your title bar, and gain a crew slot.

This makes the a-wing trainer thematic to take the Flight Instructor crew upgrade.

Thoughts?

I know it puts a crew slot on a fast ship, but losing the boost seems fair, and with two hull, putting a pricy crew member makes it dangerous. Plus, it is still a two attack ship, but intresting crew options could be fun. Plus ridiculousness of Sabine as crew on an A wing dropping a proton bomb seem fun, if impractical.

Crew slot?

Stolen tie did it first

Tactician A-Wing spam will be the day I cry tears of happiness.

Tactician.

Kanan.

Possibly some hilarity with Ezra.

It's not the worst idea in the world, but it's dangerous enough - and while b-wings are in a bad spot at the moment, I kinda feel that letting ships run about at 15pt bar (17 with two EPTs!) and that much green might be a little on the nose even further.

Not the worst idea in the world, though.

Ezra and PTL should never ever go together

To help balance any abuse, should this title then be a modification as opposed to a title? Maybe a point cost of 1?

That'd put the A-wing in competition with the Masterpiece TIE, the HWK-290 and the Attack Shuttle for cheap rebel crew carriers.

Keeping it as a title, puts it in competition with A-Wing Test Pilot.

I would suggest calling the title R-22 Spearhead - maybe introduce some characters from Droids as pilots, too.

Making it a Title would prevent double EPT shenanigans.

Given how much Boost is considered to be worth as an Engine Upgrade, and how popular it is (suggesting it's not overpriced) I don't think that's necessary.

Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, it would be an option, and if that lets more variety be flown, it is not a bad thing.

I feel like either the TIE or the A-wing would make the other redundant.

I forgot about the a-wing test pilot, so staying a title is a good idea then.

The TIE would have some other advantages, namely the illicit slot, the attack shuttle can take a turret. The a-wing has a good dial and agility. They are all similar to function, as a crew conveyance, but each has their own advantage.

With this idea, you can have an a-wing with chopper as crew for 15 points, which doesnt add much to the ship. You'd have to add more expensive crew to really benefit.

Does the Rebels TV show the A-Wings having rotating laser cannons? At one point this was a thing, but maybe it is either completely ignored or retconned?

In the EU, the fully rotatable laser cannons were on the A-Wing Mark II - a post-ROTJ design, produced by Incom.

And in the new canon, there seems to be a new a-wing version coming, as seen with the British Ginger Prince sitting in it.

Could result in a new model - post-Episode VIII wave? We also see it in the Poe Dameron comics, though that might be an ordinary A-Wing, it's hard to tell with comics.

I'm not sure it'd be all that amazing without any re-positioning abilities. I don't see much reason to take it vs the new TIE with crew coming out.

@quasistellar you take it because you like the look of an a-wing, and because it is something an A-wing can do in Rebels. Sometimes flying something different can be fun.

interesting idea but that would open one hell of a can of whoopass for the rebels.

two ~22pt Greenwing guys flying in formation with tactician. Ouch lol.

No. It currently does not, at least neither season one or two. Who knows if they will do an upgrade. Would be fun as a pilot ability. Call it the r-22 spearhead droid, has a secondary fire arc on base token, allowing the rear fire, and is a nice throwback to the old retconning with the a-wing.

It would be best if they made it a single pilot's ability, and that pilot should be General Cispin who actualy rotated his cannons in the Wraith squadron books....his pilot base would have the aux arc printed on it, and then they'd never have to worry about releasing anything for other Awing pilots to shoot backwards.

But yeah, a single pilot with that as his ability would silence many of the people who want that.

We have so many A-wing cannon and EU pilots sill to use, I dont think making one up is a good idea. I do appreciate the name R-22 as in the Spearhead (Awing's precursor fghter).

Making one up? Everyone knows the new A-Wing will have Hera, Zek and Sabine as main pilots.

Zek? Do you mean "Zeb" from Rebels? He didnt fly an A-wing, I doubt he'd even fit in one.

Hera yeah and hopefully, that could be berserk. Sabine, maybe, she's been n it once, but to me, she is very much like Jake Farrell in the A-wing, just pre-dial revealing.

I still hope for Shara Bey, Crispin, and Pash Cracken to get pilot cards in the A-wing (the 2nd two just need pilot cards period)
