Target's TFA clearance =/= new product

By SgtSmithy, in X-Wing

I've noticed some people are drawing the conclusion that Target putting the TFA core box on clearance could indicate a new product coming to Target. I am here to set the record straight.

I am a former Target employee. Target's policy when I worked there (2012-2014) was that they would often put items on Clearance when they were "discontinued" in the system. This means that they will not receive more shipments from the distributors and/or manufacturers of that particular product. You mostly see this with seasonal items, such as outdoor furniture after the summer, Halloween candy after Halloween, and decorations after the holiday season. But you also see it on other non-seasonal items, such as microwaves, indoor furniture, or toys/games that are either out of print or, for whatever reason, not being carried by Target anymore.

This does not necessarily mean they will be replaced by something. When a garden table goes on clearance, they're not set to replace it with another; it just means they'll stop carrying that particular table, at least for the time being.

Based on Target's policy, the fact that the TFA X-Wing core box is on clearance is not evidence that it is about to be replaced by something else, like the hypothesized U-wing core box or anything else. All it means is that at Target, the TFA core box has ran its course and will no longer be sold there once their inventory is sold out.

This is not to say that this means it won't be replaced by another X-Wing product, but it is absolutely not evidence that it will .

Just wanted to offer this quick PSA. Thanks for reading. Please, continue to theorize, but try not to overthink. <3

Thank you for clarifying and possibly inadvertently crushing hopes and dreams.

Well, like I said, it isn't evidence that there won't be a new product. I'm just trying to keep people from being disappointed if Force (or Rogue or whatever) Friday comes and goes and Target has nothing.

I guess I'd rather preemptively crush some dreams made based on a hypothetical than let them do it themselves when the day passes.

Obviously its going to be a gunboat/ uwing core.

I am hoping for the FFG dice tower! ;)

Garden tables aren't that comparable to licensed toys and games that are sporting last year's movie when the next big one is about to start its marketing push.

Look at the ridiculous number of Star Wars inventor carries... The most logical reason they would drop support of one popular item is if it's going to be refreshed with a newer SKU.

Next you'll be telling them that Santa Claus isn't real.

Let them dream

That's not how retail works

Clearing off shelf space to make way for the next iteration of licensed goods isn't uncommon.

I can tell you right now that a huge amount of toys and game boxes have been on clearance at Target over the last month, not just the x-wing box. I asked, the reason they are doing it is to clear shelf space for fall products in prep for the Christmas buying season where many new toys and board games will be released.

Even so, we can't say that whatever they'd be filling TFA core's shelf space with isn't necessarily another X-Wing item. Could just as easily be Star Wars: Destiny. I could see Target carrying that.

Again, doesn't necessarily point to a new X-Wing item. Absolutely they regularly do that. I worked with them through 2 holiday seasons, so I have firsthand experience with this.

My only point is that we shouldn't get carried away by saying that a TFA clearance necessarily means a new X-Wing item at Target. Target's policy certainly doesn't rule it out, but I'm not holding my breath. You shouldn't either. I'll wait to be pleasantly surprised.

I bet SW: Destiny will be in Targets, but wouldn't that be in the CCG area next to the registers?

Everyone go home.

People don't want to believe anything other than what their opinions are.

Your right. Maybe just making way for some other toy or boardgames. It's not as if that spot on the shelf is reserved for ffg star wars miniature only

Probably there and on the board game wall, where they have more CCG stuff and dice games. They quite often put the same product at multiple locations throughout the store. When Pokemon X/Y came out, they had Pokemon cards freaking everywhere.

May as well talk to the wall.

Your hostility and condescension are unnecessary. Sure, there's nothing we know for sure, so I could be way off the mark. Is that such a crime? I thought this was a forum for discussing Star Wars X-Wing related things. Your rebuttals sounds no more enlightened than mine, mind you.

...But, retailers often sign contracts to carry items, and unless the product tanked and the contract was terminated, the spot of the shelf very well could be reserved for a future FFG product. But feel free to dismiss my statements, as that is your right.

I'm just stating what I've seen recently in threads.

No matter how you explain something to someone if they want to believe something, it doesn't matter what you say. They just argue or ignore it anyway.

Hey man I wasn't even targeting you, just quoting the above post.

Not my fault if you find what I said offensive.

And as I said may as well talk to the wall. That's nowhere near hostile or anything. If people don't listen to someone who has experience in a specific department, again same results as talking to a wall.

Just Truth

Again wasn't really aimed at you. It's just that many seem to say with such certainty that "it can only be 1 thing" no matter how you say it, "nope only x because of y". When in fact that no, it could be something else

Hey I could be wrong, I'm usually pretty good to admit when I am, and hey I could be wrong about this, but I don't feel that with every movie ffg is going to release a core set,or have some mystery sku that ties into it.

I already stated why it's probably not a movie tie-in in another thread, but never know. Maybe it'll be an ace pack of some kind that has two new ships from the movie.

What it won't be is another core set. Releasing new core sets a year apart really doesn't make any sense, which so many seem to be thinking.

Maybe it is a new campaign with ships from the movies. Idk, but I have a feeling it's a scum huge ship, and that the leaked photo people said was fake, probably real.

I didn't really see any evidence that proved it was fake. Nothing concrete, so to me that makes the most sense. Scum huge ship that includes a star viper. I think many would love see a star viper update.

Whatever it is, there is only one,...and another thing, when ffg does release a core set, they usually include 2 separate expansions that has the ships from the core set, so there should be 3 mystery SKU. That's not to say it's not a rogue one campaign, but it's not a core set.

First core set- 2 ties, XWing. Released same time xwing, and tie expansion

Second core set- two tie fo, new XWing. Released same time, tie fo expansion and new XWing.

And people thinking that target is making way for the new ffg product is setting themselves up for disappointment. The op is just trying to explain basically dont hold your breath, and has explained why.

As I said, it's not s if the force awakens core set has to be replaced on target shelves with another core setm. Maybe they are making room for a new transformer toy line, or Barbie meets Jason vorhees. But just because they have a core set on clearance definitely does not mean they are receiving another core set

Edited by Krynn007

All I know is the last time they clearanced core sets at target, it was years before they got another one in to replace it.

I was probably one of the first to suggest new core because of clearance, however its just one more thing pointing to it. I don't think Target is going to release any kind of expansion they don't carry the core for, and FFG did "surprise" us last year with product in Target. I think Target has shown it has done well with Core sets and will likely get a product again, and we have this one neat SKU that's "missing".

When ffg has released core sets, that were also sold at target there was 2 side along expansion that were released with them.

This we only have 1 missions sku. Not 3, so there is no side expansion to go along with it. No target does not sell expansions, but they were still released at the same time through lgs.

Also as pointed out the first expansion went on clearance at target years before the second expansion was even released.

Why the hell would they even release a new expansion a year after another? There is no new faction, or anything worth wild to support another expansion.

Edit

On a side note we do not need a 3rd dmg deck and etc that comes with another expansion.

If they release another expansion it'll be for something other than 1 spin off movie

The whole idea that Target is getting a new Core Set is entirely plausible because of the new movie not because of any other retail practice. That's what it hinges on. If Disney/FFG/Target want a game in the lineup for Force Friday it will be a Core Set as it has to be playable from the box and we know Target won't sell expansions. If they don't want an X-Wing product on the shelves on Force Friday I highly doubt there will be a new core set or that Target will carry any X-Wing for a long time.

As for it being a U-Wing/TIE Striker, that is pure speculation. I have mixed feelings on that possibility. If the U-Wing and Striker are to be the iconic ships in the movie then maybe, but they don't seem super great for new players imo as they are probably pretty slow and need crew, etc. I could see a new set with an X-Wing, some fixes, and TIEs as a huge possibility.

Way back in the day target carried Star Wars miniatures expansion packs and scenario packs by wizards of the coast, but they also carried the starter set for it as well. I would like to be pleasantly surprised, but I don't hold out much hope for any x wing in target come force Friday (or whatever they call it this year).
