Discussion Time: Handling a person who might be holding your community back?

By Lyraeus, in Star Wars: Armada

...you have control over your actions, take responsibility, learn how to deal with people and move on...

Maybe this helps?

I think StarTalk also did an interview with Temple Grandin who has a very interesting life story as an Autistic person and has been able to help explain some of the challenges she faced. Linked here.

I'm not sure what / who that letter was meant for? Really, as it goes on, the letter claims essentially the same thing I did...that Aspies can/should learn how to deal with situations (albeit they do it in a different way). How is that any different than what I said?

Ultimately that question is rhetorical, though. The question Lyraeus (and anyone else struggling from Aspies) has to answer for himself is this: Are you living the life you want to live? (Specifically with respect to the Armada community). If the answer to that question is "no" (and it sounds like it is, based on the fact that he's been effectively banned from the community), then the next question/challenge is "What do I have to do to change that". Part of that answer might be "making the world more educated on Asperberger's". I submit that might not be the most realistic solution for any number of reasons. Another part of the answer might be (and probably is): change myself to be more acceptable to other people. Which one of those 2 does an individual have more direct control over?

Flipping this around to the community's perspective: People are not shunning Lyraeus because he has Aspberger's. They're shunning him because he's being a prick. Nobody cares (by "care", I mean, they are not judging you/ostracizing you) that you have Asperger's, just as no one cares that you might have diabetes / thyroid disorder / high cholesterol / ADD / obesity, etc. All they care is that you can play the game in a civil manner without being a prick.

*When I use this word, I'm not giving you *my* personal judgment of you, Lyr. I don't really have any problem with your self-representation on these boards or in your youtube videos. I'm using this pejorative as a summary pre-sumption for the behavior of the other people in your community. ie, I am presuming they think you're a prick based on what you have told us about them and you.

Lyr, I've watched your Armada Tactics News channel and I don't see what the problem is. You say you have asperger's, I assume that's true, but you really don't strike me as some kind of social retard. Yeah, you're nerdy, join the club. You strike me as a run-of-the-mill gaming store nerd; socially awkward, no fashion sense, etc. I think you put too much on the asperger's thing. Maybe you're a pain in the ass , maybe not...obviously you're community thinks so, I guess all I'm saying is stop blaming it on the disease; you have control over your actions, take responsibility, learn how to deal with people and move on. This is a blessing in that it means you have nothing holding you back, but also a challenge in that all the responsibility is on you.

What you have seen is over a decade of work. People today will never know the young me.

I don't think I blame the disorder and I don't understand how many of you think I am fighting back. I really am not. So confusing

1. That's good to hear, and I am genuinely happy for you. Unfortunately (and this goes back to the response I just made to Amanal, above), if you're still not getting the social results you want, you may have more work to do.

2. All I / we have to go on is what you report in the forums and threads. My point about Asperberger's was a more general one and less directed at you. There are any number of cause and affect reasons that people have a hard time functioning in society. I have a sleight facial tick, for example. Probably because my mother abandoned me and the rest of my family was...pretty hard on me. Such is life, that's how it goes. When I deal with people, they are not going to see my facial tick and say "aww...poor guy, probably got beat by his parents" They are going to think "whoa. Freak." They might not say it, but they'll probably think it. I can't change everyone's mind, but I can work on myself.

This strikes me as clearly Lyraeus posting about Lyraeus, otherwise it makes no sense.

Sooo... basically a continuation of this thread... https://community.fantasyflightgames.com/topic/222931-discussion-time-opponent-refusing-to-play-you/

Sure, or else this one https://community.fantasyflightgames.com/topic/219388-discussion-time-handling-the-loss/

They are all very closely related.

Hmmmmm... The plot tickens.
Huh, seems like a giant conspiracy where one does not lay.

It is no secret that I am a horrible opponent

I am not sure why you need to keep posting the same thing over and over. Seems to me you need more professional help rather then keep asking the internet.

I would agree with this 100%. Lyraeus, every time you make one of these threads the situation seems to have gotten worse with every new topic. Continuing to ask us for advice that you usually reject isn't helping. If you actually want to change, then you need to see a professional counselor to help you make adjustments in a way that best works with you. Period. Nerds on an internet forum are not a suitable replacement for a psychiatric professional.

The key to life, is to be found in this nugget of wisdom, right here, folks.

Agreed with all of the above, but for the critical caveat:

Not everyone has access to professional help, and suggestions to that effect are not always helpful.

Well then, you find a good friend and get non-professional help. :)

I think I look at you here, to me it seems as though you have been helping.

Yeah, I said that 3 pages ago. He denied he needed it. What do I know, just 14 years in medicine with training to recognize and give emergency initial treatment for mental health issues.

Using your training, what do you think the chances are that Mr. Kimble from Kindergarten Cop actually had a tumor in his head? You may settle a nerd debate I've had with a few friends for years (and we may just lighten the mood up a bit in here)

It's not a toomah!!!
