By Cubanboy, in Star Wars: Armada

Today is a sad day in my house because today I start a new chapter in my life without Armada. A little something, something showed up in the mail today which is to take all my time. I will give a hit at that it is,

" Gamescom 2014: The Sun Will Burn Out Before You See All of No Man’s Sky

Seeing everything in No Man's Sky will take over five billion years.

By Tal Blevins While showing off No Man’s Sky at Gamescom this week, Hello Games co-founder Sean Murray took some time to explain the vastness of the procedurally-generated universe in the game.

In the early days of development, the team was using a 32-bit number to generate all the planets in the universe. It seemed like plenty at the time, and as Sean told us, “with that 32-bit number it would take you four or five thousand years to see every planet if you spent only a second on each one.”

However, the team wasn’t satisfied with that level of cosmic scale and wanted to go even further, partially in response to message board threads saying there’s no way No Man’s Sky universe can be truly infinite because all technology has a limitation. While technically correct, Sean let us know the team at Hello Games upped the ante and the No Man’s Sky universe is now being created using a 64-bit number.

That’s two to the power of 64 planets, which Sean tells us would take about five billion years to explore if you spent one second on each; and that's with no bathroom breaks. Given that the Earth’s sun has about 4.6 billion years of fuel left before it flickers out and dies, that pretty much ensures no one will ever see every planet in No Man’s Sky. So yeah, not infinite, but really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really big:

Seems kind of boring. I'm sticking with my miniatures.

I heard that someone with a test copy reached the center of the universe in about 5 hours and that the game was all hype and no substance.

Cuban. . . what are we going to do without your "Its Friday" threads and your 6th sense for IFF content!

about five billion years

Only slightly longer than the delay between IFF podcasts, really.

This is the first game my wife is excited about in long time if ever so even if it takes 10 minutes to play she wants to do it with me. So win win. She will never touch Armada ;/)

PS post launch is over 30 hours I heard to get to the center, but it's basically 1 short of infinite for exploring.

Edit (after playing it for 3 hours I can safely say there is no Way possible to make it to the center of the univ in 5 hours without cheats. Period, I call shenanigans to the tester)

You'll be missed. In the mean time, you can pm me; I will gladly accept all those ships you no longer have a need for.:)

Or, if you're conflicted on which friend to give them to, just give them to a complete stranger … me :-))

It has to be said..........What are you doing with you miniatures?

I don't think he is quitting, its a clickbait title. He is taking a break to play No Man's Sky, which is perfectly acceptable. Last time I heard there is room for more than one game in a man's life.

That out of the way I just checked it out, I think, on Steam. What I found was "no man's sky."

They aren't clear on whether it's pay to play after you buy the $60 game. Other than that it looks pretty good.

Heresy!

Hell I'm doing both. Life is too short.

No Man's Sky looks amazing. But I need all my money for Armada tomorrow so I'm gonna have to wait til it goes on sale.

Ha! nice. Soooo want a PS4 just for this game

Amazon has new games for 20% off of any physical copy if your a prime member, so good times.

I'll be playing it as soon as it gets released for PC (took friday off to 24-hour it, too). When I have a username, I'll drop it here and we can keep an eye out for each other, if you'd like... not that it is nearly likely.

After 3 hours with No Mans Sky,

I can say that if you like crafting, exploring, survival, You will love this. (it feels like a 3d starbound)

If you cant stand crafting, survival, exploring your going to not like this game.

I like starbound but my computer cant handle starbound. . .

Doesn't seem like a worthwhile trade...

There is much to be said for a tabletop game with an opponent physically across the table, and the wider community of players assembled here and across the world.

I go outside hop in my car and drive 30 mins to the bush with nothing but a rifle, a knife, rope and a tarp if I want that kind of fun :P
