Signature Abilities in the movies

By Lareg, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Signature abilities are very interesting and powerful, and i was wondering if there are exemples of them in the movies to use as reference.

I think i found one clear example:

Fated Duel: the duel between Obi-Wan and Darth Vader on the Death Star (notice how the stormtroopers don't intervene to help Vader but just watch)

Anyone can find more examples?

Dude if I was a Stormtrooper I would awkwardly stand there too. I'm not interrupting Lord Throatcrusher while he beats up an old man in a bathrobe. Let him do whatever weird stuff he's into, I'm going to stay out of it unless someone orders me to do something.

Han's multiple Narrow Escapes!

That's a perfect description of the fated duel effect that stops people from interfering in it!

So, now that's confirmed, i propose another example, but i'm not at all sure about it : Lando esacping the explosion of the death star is a Narrow Escape. What do you guys think?

Fated Duel. Qui Gon and Darth Maul. The narration from the player had Obi Wan stuck behind those energy barriers, unable to intervene.

Ooh, ooh, ooh! Are we doing this? I love Signature Abilities!

First off, Qui-Gon and Maul seems like it could be a Fated Duel, but I'd put Qui-Gon as more of a Consular, or possibly a Sentinel, but not really a Guardian, so he'd be unlikely to have Fated Duel. However, the situation does very well fit with it, so that's more of an opinion on my part :) .

Let's see...The hard part is that we haven't seen the majority of the Force career's Sig Abilities, so since the movies focus on Force users a lot there's probably some we're missing, but I'll do what I can!

Here's a controversial one, but still quite obvious once you think about it: Jar-Jar Binks with the droid tied to his foot is a clear example of Unmatched Expertise! Let me explain:

Jar Jar, with all his Distracting Behavior, is clearly a Performer, making his career Colonist, and his second spec is clearly Politico, with his subsequent time as a representative in the Senate. So just before the battle, Jar Jar wanted to get a bit better at fighting because it was going to be rough, so he used the rank in Well Rounded from his newly purchased Politico spec to add Ranged (Light) to his list of career skills, reasoning that it works for both pistols and grenades, and so is fairly versatile. Plasma bombs are also a gungan specialty, so it made sense.

Then after a difficult battle he finds himself surrounded, and he realizes it's time to drop the Unmatched Expertise. Sure, he hasn't put a rank in Ranged (Light) yet, but he's got Expertise near maxed, and the battle droids are using carbines and so can be used with Ranged (Light) at short range. Dropping the difficulty to Simple means that even without a rank he's doing quite well for himself. But narratively Jar Jar just wouldn't bend down and pick up the gun and go to town, so what to do? Well, he gets it tied around his foot and kicks it around to get it to fire, of course!

Name one other character who could do that. If that's not Unmatched Expertise, I don't know what is!

Good catch RLogue77, i had forgotten about that part of the duel with Maul!

Excellnet example Absol197, Unmatched expertise fits Jar-Jar well. Also he probably has a high agility (but low coordination given how goofy he is) so ranged light would be effective anyway.

As for your fated duel objection, it is possible that Maul is a Guardian:Warden that has crosspecced in aggressor and a saber tree different from Soresu, so maybe it's him that triggers it.

The best thing about signature abilities is that those situations could arise whether the signature ability was present or not; just the ability rewards the player for making those situations come up more often.

I don't see what would make Qui-Gon a counciler aside from his age; though I would argue that the "Fated Duel" was triggered by Maul rather then the PC's, with the bit at the beginning being party chat.

"Look, we could all fight Maul but we might spend a long time doing so; too long in fact. Mind going on ahead? I'm sure us two will be enough to defeat him eventually."

Then Maul triggered it to separate Qui-Gon from Obi-Wan, or alternatively that last bit was literally an athletics check with Obi-Wan failing to catch up on two separate rolls, much to his frustration

Good call Verdant, i had forgotten about SWTOR but it's a viable source of abilities. Also in that trailer we see an example of Protect with mastery upgrade (and couple of triumphs in the roll i'd guess1) when Satele blocks Malgus' lightsaber bareheanded.
