Dengar and Whisper

By LouisCypher, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Today I had a game with my Painbot Dengar facing a VI ACD FCS Gunner Whisper.

I had initiative, so Dengar attacked first.

Then it was Whisper's turn: he rolls his dice and Dengar saves them all.

My question is: what's the right time chart now, considering Gunner, Painbot on Dengar, Dengar's ability and ACD?

And what id Initiative was reversed?

Thanks for answering!

Since you have initiative, your abilities resolve first. Combat would go something like this.

Dengar shoots first. Nothing triggers off of this

Then Whisper attacks and the attack misses.

Next comes effects that are not attacks.

You get to trigger R5-P8.

Whisper can choose to Cloak now with ACD. Let's assume your opponent doesn't use ACD, because they want to attack again.

Assuming Whisper wants to use Gunner, we move to abilities with an attack.

Dengar can use his ability because you have initiative.

Next, Whisper can use Gunner.

Whisper can use ACD off of the Gunner attack (assuming (s)he's still alive after 2 shots from Dengar)

Assuming that the Whisper player has initiative:

Whisper attacks first. The attack misses.

We first resolve effects that are not attacks.

Whisper can choose to cloak now (to guard against Dengar's attack) but let's skip that to push more damage through with Gunner.

Next, R5-P8 can trigger, since Dengar defended

Now we resolve effects that are attacks.

Whisper has initiative so Whisper can fire first.

In reaction to making an attack, Whisper can take a free Cloak Action.

If Dengar had not already used R5-P8, it could be used now.

Dengar can now use his ability and fire at Whisper.

Now we're back to normal combat, and Dengar can fire at his normal PS timing.

Oh, a challenge! Ok, I'll try my hand (even though I'll probably be ninja'd and corrected):

Dengar with initiative

(EDIT: I skipped Dengar's initial attack because that's not the interesting part)

Steps 1 - 7: Whisper attacks

Step 8 : Dengar can trigger painbot. Afterwards Whisper can trigger cloak and / or fire control system

Step 9 : Dengar gets his counter attack

Steps 1 - 7: Dengar attacks

Steps 8 : nothing to trigger here

Step 9 : now if Whisper is not cloaked, whisper can trigger gunner

Steps 1 - : Whisper attacks

Steps 8 : fire control system / cloak

Step 9 : nothing to do now

Step 10 : remove destroyed ships

Whisper with initiative

Steps 1 - 7: Whisper attacks

Step 8 : Whisper can trigger cloak and / or fire control system, then Dengar can trigger his painbot

Step 9 : If Whisper missed, she can trigger gunner

Step 1 - 7 (optional for gunner) : Whisper attacks

Step 8 : Whisper can trigger cloak and / or fire control system

step 9 : Dengar can trigger his counter attack

Steps 1 - 7: Dengar attacks

Steps 8 : nothing to trigger here

Step 9 : nothing here

Step 10 : remove destroyed ships

Now, let's see if I got it all straight...

Thanks, that's how i thought it worked.

So if Dengar has initiative there are good chanches to kill Whisper after his first attack :D

Which is all fine and dandy, but if they're both at PS 9 (which they must be if initiative matters) then Whisper still gets both the first shot and the gunner shot (if the first attack misses) because of the simultaneous fire rule.

That's why i love countermeasures and glitter on him ;)

think the question was pretty well answered but i gotta ask...

what..the..hell...is whisper doing in dengar's face when she doesnt have the first shot to immediately cloak before he retaliates/fires normally?

He's like...one of if not the biggest nightmare to phantoms lol

Follow up question:

Whisper gets to cloak before Dengar fires back, but would Whisper get her focus token (assuming she hit) before Dengar fires back from his ability?

Yes. ALL things triggered after defending/attacking that aren't attacks resolve before any such attacks take place.
