The Science! Lightsabres

I always love his videos.

I resent that title. There is nothing wrong with lightsabers. Lightsabers are made of pure, unadulterated right.

What?! A fantasy sword that actually wouldn't work in the real world? Say it ain't so.

Also, you may want to put a little blurb about the language. Not everyone on here is an adult and some parents may not care for their spawn listening to this.

Lightsabers are actually really interesting. If you assume the blades to be plasma arcs constrained by a magnetic field, they are entirely possible (though how you actually have your hands anywhere near the blade is another matter...)

And current quantum mechanical research about the properties of photons is allowing more and more control, possibly even allowing a laser beam created without the use of mirrors.

Umm, how are mirrors necessary to produce a laser beam? (My background is not physics, so this question is sincere.)

My knowledge is far from complete, but the general idea is that the tube the laser is emitted from is coated in mirrors to make sure that all the photons are lined up perfectly, giving you a focused beam instead of the spread you get from a flashlight or the like.

However, the focus is achieved by using lenses, as far as I know, not mirrors, while the emission itself is, as far as I know, done via the stimulation of atoms.

Also, decided to check what Wikipedia says on the matter (I am very sorry). Judging by what I know, Suma99 probably meant the part where a portion of light is trapped in order to feed the emission. Is my guess correct?

Yeah. Optics is not my area, I'm a theoretical quantum mechanistic.

The mirror is about the laser going 3 feet and stop.

"A laser sword has to be a magnetically contained tube of plasma. Anything else is clearly ludicrous. The containment field would obviously work in both directions. A blaster shot is also plasma. Q.E.D." http://darthsanddroids.net/episodes/0009.html
