What counts as in open career advance?

By warheart, in WFRP Rules Questions

Hi guys,

I'm confused by the open career advances. What count's as an open career advance? on page 36 of WFRP rulebook, the diagram shows a selection of a fortune die for toughness as an open career advance. So what can go into the other 5 slots? the advance options that are listed at the front of the career sheet, up to the limit of the number stated?

One more question - under the four general advances, can I have more than one trained skill in the 'skill training or specialization' line? Assuming I can, then it is also reasonable to expect that although I have more than one skill being trained, it fulfills only one advancement condition. Am I right about this?

Thanks in advance! Been trying to decipher the text the entire night.

Open Career Advances come from the Career Sheet (ie choose 6 from 10).

You can only have one advance for each line of the General Career Advances.

ie when you've taken 10 in-career advances (the 4 specified ones and the 6 Open ones) it's time to move on career wise.

Ah. That really makes things so much clearer. Thanks!

You could possibly use all 10 career advances to up a Primary Characteristic from 9 to 10 ;)

You would be quite powerful in whatever characteristic, but that would have been all your 10 Career Advances in one fell swoop.

Yeah, not to mention that you would have had to use of 9 of the 10 in a previous career, 8 of the 10 in the one before that, and so on just to get there. Since a starting character can't have any Characteristic above a 5, that's a minimum total investment of 40 advances to raise a single Characteristic to a 10. It's possible, but really takes a lot of focus and dedication to get a Characteristic to 10.
