HERO's BigFish vs Lyraeus's Dodonna the Oppressor

By Lyraeus, in Star Wars: Armada

Old system would be a 7-3 in the new current system 6-4 lasts till 59 points I believe.

I think we both had terrible mistakes. I think mine was tossing Dodonna in a bit to early and ate some bad shots and then T4 I did not Slicer Tools the Nav away letting the assault frigate escape the trap!

I have to say. . . my trap was planned for the 80 alone but I got all 3! Slicer tools are great!

Let me guess, the turd got front bumped?

Nope. The turd did get blocked but it killed the offending Admonition with 11 damage to a side arc with no shields and the turd had Xi7's.

However, due to the Slicer tools happy Bright Hope, the Assault frigate DID get blocked causing it to create a situation where Home One bumps Bright Hope, then goes back and dial nicks the Assault Frigate putting Home one in a double arc of BOTH TRC90's (both had Con Fire) AND the not titled MC30.

The Turn had Capacitor Failure (a gift from Admonition from APT's from turn 2) and only 1 shield on the Front, Rear, and Left sides. Capacitor failure is the one where if you have no sheilds you cant redirect. . . well dodonna killed the side and front shields in the front arc shot of 4 damage then CF for another 3 damage and no Contain on the second shot which netted me Projector Misaligned. Dodonna then died to the Assault Frigate who then rams Bright Hope killing her but staying in position. I then activation my MC30 attacking Jaina's the objective ship and getting in the red a blank and a hit, in the blacks 2 hits and a hit/crit. I TRC the blank red to a double and Ordnance Experts the blacks into 2 Hit/Crits giving me 9 damage AND APT's. I then shoot the side of the Turd though I could possible of front arced the side but I was not thinking of that dealing 2 more hull damage due to capacitor failure and dropping Home One to 1 hull, the 30 then moves in a double arc behind the whale. . . My last TRC90 activates shoots from the side to the 80 killing her. Lastly Quantum Storm activated giving me my second token to HERO's 1 and I block the Whale. I thought I Slicer Tooled the Whale but I think I broke vassal that that got lost or I completely forgot. Anyways, that was turn 3.

OH we did have an argument over the importance of Ackbar and Adding dice at the appropriate times. Well not me and HERO, me and the spectators. I am a believer in chaos theory so rolling 5 dice is different than rolling 3 dice then rolling 2 dice. In fact, we are using a random number generator on a computer. . . which is not so random (algorithms as not random they follow rules). So to me it matters but i did not bring this up until the end due to HERO stating that he was going to CF dial and attack my last 90 but did not add the die. I understood that but was a bit miffed because the rules were being followed now vs the entire game for "Add" effects.

Its fine. The game ended where it did, both of us tired and upset at our own mistakes I think.

Slicer Tools were amazing on my end and i think that is the upgrade that deserves MVU!

Vassal is a great free open source program, never as good as a real game tho. I like that it's there, but don't play much

This.

Vassal is no substitute for the real thing. Really not.

But it's a great supplement.

For one it gives me the ability to play many different opponents, some of the very good.

I also see so many creative lists I would never have met otherwise.

Finally it gives me the ability to experiment...with cards I don't have many of, ships I don't yet own...very exiting.

I'm not sure I'd even be playing Armada anymore if it wasn't for vassal...too small a play group here, too far to travel to tournaments.

With vassal, however, the game has a future for me...

...so, in a sense, it has earned FFG loads of cash from me...rather than quitting I've bought LOADS of Armada ships...

Where is the learn to play in vassal again?? :/

There are 3 video tuts on Facebook.

. . It was fun!

Looks like the MC80 got dunked on~

And the link to the blog entry with all the videos...

If people want the actual .vlog file I can post that as well - it is in two parts - I imagine I am the only one who recorded the whole thing.

Congratulations, Lyraeus! My confidence in your skill was not unfounded!

Death to the fish-faced trap-detectors!

Hoorah for bearded men with clever plans!

Congratulations to Lyraeus.

I will watch and do a post match analysis.

Both players are welcome to PM me their thoughts - I will have questions. Probably Saturday or Sunday as I work 11a-11p today.

+1...I have actually bought more ships BECAUSE of vassal. I NEVER would have bought so many corvettes until I played swarm virtually the first time.

I swear to jeebus that I thought Hero's wife's name was alexa and he was an a-hole for making her do his bidding the whole game.....

:D

ALEXA! TURN VOLUME DOWN!!!!!

How relevant was Dodonna's ability throughout the game?

Congrats Lyr! Went a bit past my bedtime so I'll have to catch the replay on the parts I missed.

Great turn out last night.

Recapping from last night, while I think the soundboard, Twitch, talking to spectators on Vassal/Twitch, and having to type because Ly doesn't have a mic was OK, it was as bit too much. I mean, we played for FOUR hours... so maybe in the future we might want to try a different format. I definitely think a mic is better for this kinda game, it really does make the game play much faster and make the overall experience more lively.

As for big mistakes, I think the pivotal moment for me was around the 2h30m mark where after I killed the Admon, I clipped a shield on my MKII moving the whale and the whale got stuck. The capacitor failure was also really bad early on, but I think that was the turning point. I think if I got a little bit further out, Ackbar might have lived until next turn and that would have been a completely different story. When playing on the table, I almost never bump, so I definitely need more game time on Vassal to gauge that kind of stuff.

Some other mistakes made:
> I forgot the nav token on the CR90, I think I could have moved or at least applied some pressure on the backend without losing her for no real gain.

> The first move with the MC80 was a little too ballsy IMO. Took way too much fire on the approach, but I was looking to kill the Admon and then engine out. The payoff would have been better if the latter part worked..

How do you guys think we should do further streams?

Went past all our bedtimea I think. . .

Good game guys. I skimmed through it.

One of the major turnoffs of Vassal for me is how it turns the games into much longer affairs.

Close match though. Both players definitely did well and made their points pretty well for their fleets.

When mics are used ---> much faster games go.

When mics are used ---> much faster games go.

Using a mic you can do a full game with plenty of squads in 3 hours, setup and everything.

Of course, if people would stop spending so much longer than in RL before making a decision... :D

Also, from a player perspective, it cuts the lobby chat down. Which can be good or bad depending on how the lobby behaves.

I think having commentators and not splitting the audience is key. Its why I loved when Biggs streamed (and not just because he let me in the booth). Commentators can communicate with the audience via the chat without sacrificing concentration needed to play the game, and keep that audience engaged. They can follow little tangents of game related thought during the ample downtime inherent in a vassal armada game. It's more fun.

Also, from a player perspective, it cuts the lobby chat down. Which can be good or bad depending on how the lobby behaves.

Totally agreed.

OK, who wants to do the next one? I can host on Twitch, and we can follow a commentary setup if anyone is down to commentate.

Who is next I wonder. . .

Im always happy to commentate contingent on game time.
