Now that W10 angry/joy has passed, may I present the Battle of Yavin

By TheycamefromBEHIND, in X-Wing

*Disclaimer: First this completely breaks the limits of the game and was done for fun. Secondly, I tried my best to stay faithful to the lore according to what I found whether it's true or not and maintain balance so don't grab the pitchforks if I missed something/got it wrong/balanced it a certain way.

This was a Ultra-Epic game inspired by the battle at the end of ANH. 821 Points per side, based on the info I found the internet it was 30 Rebels (22 X-Wings and 8 Y-Wings) + Han VS. Darth Vader and Black Squadron (for balance 39 ties). Only historical present pilots and droids were allowed: Han, Wedge, Luke, Jek, Garven, Biggs, Dutch, Vader, Mauler, Backstabber and Dark Curse.

PS3 cardboards were used to seperate other people's tie collections *all generic were PS4*

Here are the lists:

How I did it:

Lists were printed out and marked as the Hull/Shields were lost. The Damage Deck was numbered 1-33 and the rolled 2 d20s minus 7 (reroll below 0) and suffered the crit, which was written on a piece of paper. (My first thought was using a random number generator site using 1-33 and this may not be the best statistically but we enjoyed the suspense having to roll to see what the crit was and in our case Direct hits were about 1/3 of all crits)

I used Red Sq. since Rookie Pilots would create a PS imbalance, since Black Sq. were hand picked by Vader (what I read) each had HU and Predator to represent their skill and help add points to keep the number of ties closer to the rebels.

You could only place in R2-R3 of your edge, using this many ships I wanted to force a quick engagement in round 1 which worked well.

I left it to the players to vote if they wanted a delayed entry of Vader, Mauler, BS and Han. They choose yes so at the end of Rd 1 Vader and wingmen appear behind the Rebs, the round after Han appears with R3 of Vader.

To handle Initiative, I separated the 17 Reds into 2 Groups of 9 & 8 while the 36 Blacks were divided into 3 groups of 12. All 5 groups rolled off against each other to determined the order when it hit PS4, this made setup, movement and firing rather smooth. As each group went up it was encouraged to go in numerical order to track who had already gone.

I also used this to help try to distribute the points somewhat equally:

Heres Round 1, before and after

A smaller detachment of Ties lead by DC was sent to pin down the named Aces while the generics overwhelmed the Rebel generics.

Vader choose to hunt the Y-Wings first like in the movie

Round 2:

Round 3:

Round 4: The rebels were suffering, and a new player joining, we added 4 Xs and 2 Ys to bolster the Rebs.

28575881040_9b48c61676.jpg

It was not enough and Han was removed from Vader's tail

Round 5 and last few rounds:

28860112215_3a87832d88.jpg

28575881220_d4b9c93ae9.jpg

Game was called with the overwhelming victory of the Imperials, the Alliance fighters were crushed while only 15/40 Ties were lost, and the Rebel base was given the "Alderaan treatment"

In conclusion:

It was a great game and it started with large amounts of ships but over 100 pts were lost each round making the game faster than expected, some great moments and Biggs survived!!!

If I would do it again I would....

- allow some time for each sides to discuss tactics and allow dials to be shown and planned amongst themselves.

- predetermine who was flying what before the day of the event.

Hope you enjoyed this and by all means try this out and let me know how it went for you and if I can help with anything.

Fly Casual and stay tuned Part 2: Escape from Hoth...

Amazing. Sounds like you need to tweak the Imperials down a little bit. You can make a mission version involving the Trench Run. With a success / fail component for the rebels verses just destroying ties

Super awesome! I'd love to do this for Yavin, and an Armada game for Endor.

I was thinking that but imho it was more the fact that they rushed one side with the bulk of their forces and quickly turn the tables, also the Rebel player didn't use his 7 PS2 Ys as blockers and paid dearly for it. While the Imp side was only one player and the rebels didn't coordinate or even communicate at all, but I'm still looking it over. I choose over the trench since it was a straight dogfight and if memory serves me correctly the Ys only made the attacks runs after the Black Sq was cleared. Another consideration was Rebels were 31 ships and I wanted to Imps to outnumber than but still within reason so HU & Predator keep their numbers down. But thanks for the feedback

Wonderful pictures! Perhaps think about adding another foot of table space, to make things slightly less cramped? Though I get you wanted a quick engagement.

Very awesome. Weren't there a couple of R-22 Spearhead pilots there? The A-wing is close enough that it could be used to represent them.

Awesome, but I would have liked to see some objectives or follow on. Like, immediately afterwards you did a Trench Run scenario using only Rebel ships which managed to get off the Imperial side of the board, etc.

But still very cool!

Wave 10 anger passed away? Every time I will see a Rebel TIe hence forth it will come roaring back... That said, what you did here, AWESOME :)!

Something as big as this should be played on 6 by 6 imho.

All the more proof that X-Wings suck compared to TIE Fighters

I love me some Epic bit the game does begin to break apart once you exceed 300 points without Epic ships.

You end up with so many ships on the board that you cannot avoid any arcs and forced to take a bucket full of dice on every engagement. You cant move properly and it really, really is a joust fest.

That being said, it is fun to fire off 3 crackshot/Guidence Chipped Assault Missiles into a block of 12 TIEs.

You can only fire those assault missiles into the 12 TIEs because you don't have space to spread out the TIE-Fighters. 6x6 might solve this a little as you can have groups as flankers still.

I would say that you should break them up more. Instead of just one giant formation flying at another one, make it many smaller ones. That might help the Rebels out some. Otherwise it's just swarms firing at each other.

one other thing is you forgot Jon "Dutch" Vander, Jake Farrel, and Keyan Farlander were there as well. Jake flew a r-22 spearhead so just put him in his a wing but Farlander was the surviving y wing. so you would have to put his b-wing tile under a y-wing. this would have given you three more aces to help out that were there. Also according to the new cannon Shara Bey was there as well although we do not know what she was flying.

looks cool, but I'm missing torpedo's on the X-wings and Y-wings. Ofc in the movie they only fired those on the exhaust port (and in the X-wing games, Ties were often to evasive to get a proper lock on anyway)

And imperials should also have static turrets :P

And judging from the movie the battle was an overwhelming victory for the imperials, except for Luke firing off his torpedo shot, so did Luke survive?

looking forward to the battle of endor

Ion Torps are awesome in this type of a game.

Also according to the new cannon Shara Bey was there as well although we do not know what she was flying.

She joined at some point before the Battle of Hoth - but that doesn't mean she was at Yavin:

http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Shara_Bey

Shara Bey was at the Battle of Yavin according to the Shattered Empires comic (which is canon). She almost blasts Luke when he comes back in a Lambda.

Norra Wexley is also there as a Y-wing pilot.

I am stupid. I read Yavin and thought Endor.

I know you had fun, but from the pictures, all I can see is a dice fest. Nothing of this game outside of the models and dice were used. You guys just went straight and K turned and fired again. You need to toss out something to break the formations, otherwise, this is just an exercise in RNG.

Coming back in a Lambda sounds like Battle of Endor, why would have been in a Lambda at Yavin?

Yes. You are correct. I am an idiot.

So true, when I look at those pics I just think "ugh, could have just saved everyone's afternoon and played Quarriors or Yahtzee or something."

There's no obstacles, no secondary objectives, no space to flank or vie for position, just gigantic blocks of dice moving toward one another.

As long as they had fun then that is all that matters. To do a game of the size with obstacles, objectives, etc... it would take a few days. My guess it that they were able to play and pack up in a day. How long did it take you guys to play from start to finish?

Was at work and sadly FFG is blocked there

I saw that but my knowledge of the EU is lacking at best so I figured I'd stick more to what we saw in the movie

tbh this was my first ultra epic, and wanted to get a baseline so I left it as straight dogfight, now that I've gotten a feel for it future ones will have objectives and secondary targets/objectives.

I would say that you should break them up more. Instead of just one giant formation flying at another one, make it many smaller ones. That might help the Rebels out some. Otherwise it's just swarms firing at each other.

On side yes, but I must admit that player is a jouster so I prepped for a slugfest, on the other board with the Reb aces was actually dogfighting

one other thing is you forgot Jon "Dutch" Vander, Jake Farrel, and Keyan Farlander were there as well. Dutch is there, he's in his Y-Wing, as said above though Keyan was in a Y-Wing I kept it as simple as possible and just used Dutch and Gold Sq, and X-wings like we say in the movie.

Torpedoes were my first thought but 30 protons is 120 points and thats more Ties to deal with, and like you said since no torps were used in the dogfight I left it out.

All named Xs other than Wedge/Garven (can't remember) lived when we called it, the named pilots did well it wiping out the ties. Next is Hoth w/ transports,

On one side yes the other side not so much, this was really my first crack at this, and a Reb player is a jouster and likes to joust, its how he enjoys the game so thats what we did there while the other was more about maneuvering after the initial pass.

thanks all for you feedback I'm def gonna give it all thought for next games, I encourage u all to try, tweak and have fun.
