VERY off topic: a question regarding targeted ads

By Audio Weasel, in X-Wing Off-Topic

Ok, so maybe I'm signing up for the tin foil hat brigade for considering this but here's what's going on. I have a friend who is a truck driver. He's also an alcoholic. He does internet searches regularly to find meetings near where he's going to be. I was using his hulu login the other day, and noticed that there were an awful lot of beer commercials shown. Is it possible that he's been targeted for these, or am I concerned about nothing?

It's entirely possible, and pretty shady. There are ways to turn off ads like that, though. I highly recommend AdBlock, which will turn off ads entirely. However, if he must still see them, I'm pretty sure you can disable the specific ads in browser settings somewhere.

Honestly, I'm disgusted that alcohol companies target their ads towards people seeking help.

I think there just may be some crossover keys in the algorithims that bring up the ads.

uMatrix and uBlock Origin are practically mandatory these days.

Ghostery and Adblock are your friends.

Yeah I watch atheist shows and vlogs they try to show me Christian adverts, pick an adblocker and browse the net in safety.

Working in online marketing / remarketing teaches you some very scary things about the tinterweb. Especially when you use the same password-protected accounts across multiple computers at home and work.

Orwell was right .

I despair at people who use the same password for everything.

Look, I can't change my birthday, OK? It's gotta be the same for everything! ;) *

* Kidding! I don't use my birthday for my password, I'm not that stupid :D

Sad but true. I look up product X on site A, then I go to site B and I see adds for product X there. I ofcourse ignore them.( No coca cola! get out of my head! noooo!)

It is more than likely. Nearly every ad you see online is targeted.

Not the same password, the same account - google logins are becoming more and more universal these days in particular, and a lot of services authenticate with FB and Twitter.

E: and yeah, get adblock or ublock or whatever. The only ads I see are the ones I decide to allow through either as a means of supporting specific sites, or because *shudder* they block the content if you don't turn adblock off, which is always irritating. 4OD **** you all
