TFA Beginner Game just arrived...

By bradknowles, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

there's a star where the planet used to be.

No, there’s not. They sucked the whole thing up. There is neither a star nor a planet there anymore.

And given how much energy must have been released when the thing finally got blown up, I’m thinking there isn’t any debris of any size there, either — that explosion must have been close to a supernova in power.

Looks like a star formed out of the energy and new matter to me. It did not go nova.

Why so upset at that? It has been established, well before, that khyber crystals were used in the construction of the death stars' superlasers. The empire had access to the Jedi temple, and thus records. Ilum was likely not public knowledge.

Because they done went and Alderaaned a world with a unique history that I'd have liked to see/use in a campaign and which now has to be retconned or alt-historied if it is to be used? I was actually flirting with sending my canon, TFA-era F&D campaign in the direction of Ilum -- but that's not happening now. I guess I'd have preferred if they just came up with a new planet. Nothing would have been lost. They did it with the Hosnian system -- why not with the Starkiller planet?

Anyways. Not a huge deal. Just a curious move.

Then house-rule that biz! Your players probably won't find out until it's too late. OR- maybe you can fudge the exact date a little bit and have them do an undercover mission there while Ilum's still being gouged for resources. That would be a lot of fun. Scarcity is fun, too. They'll probably feel even better about getting their lightsabres if they really have to WORK for it. The other option is salvaging fragments of First Order technology- heard somewhere that khyber crystals were possibly used in the construction of some of the First Order's ship-based weaponry. Is that true?

Maybe it's posted elsewhere, but are there any new Careers, Talents or Species that don't appear in the existing games?

It looks like that Starkiller base ws mobile and it likely moved somewhere else after the first shot to the republic capital, so there is literaly nothing at the old Ilum coordinates because the planet has moved somewhere.

It could be a good hook for a story when the PCs arrive there and don't find anything "our position is correct....except, no Ilum"

Nope, nope, and nope.

It might be possible to reverse-engineer the Abregado species from the Colonist pre-gen, but that involves a fair bit of guesswork in terms of values that don't pertain to characteristics or starting wound/strain threshold.

Odds are we'll see the Abregado as a full write-up in a later supplement.

@OP, the character sheet for the Abednedo character so I can attempt to reverse-create the character and arrive at the base stats for the species. Please. :)

For real though, that is what I would like to see. Please. :)

Durm Bormo is Bra 3, Agi 2, Int 4, Cun 1, Wil 2, Pre 2, so I'm betting they get low Cunning and high Intellect (well, duh!)

12 wounds, 14 strain, Computers 1, Knowledge 2, Leadership 1, Medicine 2, Resilience 1, Vigilance 1, Melee 1.

He has a Shock Stave for a weapon.

His talent tree seems to be an abridged version of Doctor.

I vaguely recall that the pregenerated characters aren't strictly created like standard starting characters, as Donovan mentioned, so reverse engineering might not be straightforward.

I'm going to guess starting stats for the species is probably something like:

BR 2 AG 2 INT 3 CUN 1 WIL 2 PRE 2

wounds are prolly 9+BR

strain would be 12+WIL

95xp at creation

Taking the 40xp from INT 4 and the 30xp from BR 3 is 70xp

Free ranks in career skills for EotE is usually 4 ranks in career, 2 in specialization. I would imagine Vigilance and Melee are probably non-career skills for a Doctor type and Resilience is a career skill xp was used for, while the rest are free ranks.

That would mean 10xp each for Vigilance and Melee, 5xp for Resilience

95xp is my guess for starting xp.

Is there any info on Species abilities?

No info that I can see. I really wasn't expecting anything else - none of the other Beginner sets have had species, specs or Force powers. They are intended as a tutorial.

Right, yeah that makes sense. Guess I'll wait for a source book announcement to see how different they are from the stats I posted and just use what I think is accurate until then. Thanks for the help. :)

This is totally counter to everything i stand for, but I feel compelled to say this:

Come on, guys, give it a rest! We'll get the species stats in a book soon enough, just be patient and stop this pointless back-calculating!

The hypocrisy is OVER 9,000!!!

I'll simply just use the custom stats until then.

I must also add that I'm tired of seeing the same human-like species all the time (especially in AoR books) and I'm fed up of scantily-clad fanservice pictures.

The New Marcy begins here!

Who are you and what did you do with Marcy?

Well, I would post a clip from the original Invasion of the Body Snatchers, where Kevin McCarthy runs out into the road screaming "They're already here! YOURRRRRR NEEEEEXT!" - but kids today probably wouldn't get the joke, being an old movie and all. So here's some Russian power disco instead:

I'm guessing I didn't need the sarcasm smiley :)

I was just astonished that Phee didn't want to reverse-engineer something involving numbers. It worried me!

There is no need for concern, human MaeloraMarcy. I am performing my living functions in the ordinary human manner. I also perform other human tasks, such as participating in my vocational duties, and placing nutritional matter into my skull-orifice.

Do not be alarmed.

Impostor! What have you done with our REAL Maelora?!? ;) ;) ;)

How is the adventure? In terms of playability is it easy or otherwise and what is the goal of the adventure?

Is there anything about the New Republic?

Haven’t actually had time yet to read or run the adventure.

Maybe someone else can provide their thoughts on this matter?

I've skimmed through it, but not enough to really provide any solid details, mostly as I have a friend that may potentially incorporate the adventure into his recently-launched post-TFA campaign. And while I can do pretty good in keeping player knowledge separate from character knowledge, it's more fun if I don't have to do so in the first place.

But from what I've seen, it's nothing to extraordinary, and ends with the PCs getting drawn into the brewing fight between the First Order and the Resistance by way of a plot macguffin that reveals more of what the FO is up to than they'd like folks to know.

Who are the pregen characters in terms of classes and specs? I understand they come from all three lines right?

There were no trees on Illum though right?!
