Isn't SWD a lot like Ashes?

By Daoshifu, in Star Wars: Destiny

I've watched through everything I could find on sw destiny and for me it looks like collectibles Ashes rise of the phoenixborn just uglier (Ashes is reeeeely pretty).

There are some obvious diffrences but it looks like the idea is pretty much the same.

What do you think?

Not at all! The only thing these games have in common is that they both use cards and dice.

In Ashes you roll all your dice at the beginning of your turn and these form your mana pool for playing cards + summoning units. You can then attack and defend with your units(in a way that is somewhat similar to magic/hearthstone).

In SW: Destiny You activate your characters to add their dice to your dice pool. Dice of a common type can be spent to perform various actions. There is no real combat in Destiny, you spend your dice to deal damage directly.

RE: Art. I believe the ashes dice look nicer (though simpler) but they SW dice are not bad either and do feel like they will last. The card art for ashes is amazing, but the cards for Destiny are quite nice too. Ashes is more stylized and the destiny cards I've seen so far have been alot more photo realistic.

So Basically, I think there is lots of room for both games and I will be playing them both :)

SRC: I've played a bunch of Ashes and played the demo of Destiny at Gencon.

What Lukez said. I love Ashes but really the two games don't have a similar feel beyond having cards and dice, the combat is totally different and the timing and nature of the die rolls give each game a much different feel.

Also Star Wars has a better theme IMO. Blindfolded, I could throw a dart in my FLGS (hypothetically of course) and have a decent chance of hitting a game about dueling wizards, even if we're barring Magic itself.

The alternating of actions does heavily call back to Ashes, imo.

I don't know ashes, but it reminds me of action windows, edge battles, and combat resolution in Star Wars LCG.

Like so many other games there are similarities and differences.

The back and forth reminds me of Ashes but the "mana" generation is very different.

That reminds me i should just frame Ashes cards. I just want to look at that art.

No, not at all.

Except in that they are both ridiculously overpriced (though signing up as a playtester gets you the packs for free for Ashes.).

Soon every game will be owned by Asmodee. ;)

Tbh the difference in creating dice pool is a minor thing. You want to roll those dice early in SWD (usually) to know your options. Also discard to recollection and discard to switch sides on a die is similar. Then 5 cards per turn with virtually no draw. I see many similarities.

The other difference is that SWD is a LOT more luck based. Because in Ashes, rare Power symbols can be used as lower symbols, meaning the vast majority of the time you have the right dice for your cards. And even if you don't just discard the top card of your deck to change the facing. Whereas SWD has no rule to change facing (other than the rotate action on a die). So it depends, if you prefer more luck and a lighter game, SWD is for you. If you want more strategy and less luck, then Ashes.

Strangely, I find myself wanting a lighter game this time around. I have plenty of deeper games and have trouble finding people to play them with. :(

Then go for SWD. No problem with light games, I'm just saying that this one is lighter.

Short & Fun is the appeal to one of my groups with this one. Something to play one round of after an RPG session, or get together and enjoy a few matches when we really don't have a lot of time after work.

We too play a slew of mind-numbing, more lengthy and complex game endeavors.

Short game length is one of the big draws for my group too. We've been wanting a quick fun duel game for a while.
