The upcoming season

By Parkdaddy, in Star Wars: Armada

2.5 new waves

A campaign box

3 new ship upgrade types

6 new ships

8 new squadrons (+24 named squadrons)

12 new objectives

New obstacles

Holy cow, this next tournament season after Christmas had better not look anything like the previous one. I know we don't have W5 or CC previews yet, but any predictions on new fleet archetypes? New metas you want to see (or not see)? Will space battles become dependent upon the fleet matchup, or is 400 points of pew pew still 400 points of pewpew (for the sake of academic discussion, assume unlimited resources to purchase 25 flotillas along with equal skill levels and experience)?

I've got a prediction for an archetype. Using multiple medium-large ships with an interdictor and Konstantine. Focus is on a bid to go second with high scoring objectives. Not really a prediction so much as a logical conclusion.

Not sure where you get 2,5 new waves. If you are discounting the flotilla's I sense you dont get their significance.

My next regionals is not until right after Worlds in november so It will likely be up to the Corellian Conflict. I wonder where US Nationals will be taking place. . . NOVA? Hmmmm

His point, unless I am mistaken, is that Wave 3 and Wave 4 are actually one wave that was split up, so he said 2.5

Bah, we have no proof of that. X-Wing has had waves of 2 ships or one ship per faction. I think that FFG is keeping a product count.

The proof is the simultaneous release date and the skipped SKUs. If it was intended as separate waves, they would've released months apart. There is no other reason why they would call it two waves and release it at the same exact time.

Not really. We did not even see waves 4 ship for long, so while possible that they could of been intended to be together, we do know that they build waves in sets of 2 and go from there. I am no beta tester and they, or one of the developers will say otherwise.

Until then, they are 2 waves. saying otherwise is going to confuse and look silly,

I'm not sure we can predict where it will go.

I just played at GenCon and we saw that the meta from wave 2 is still relatively unsettled. New ideas and new fleets are still coming out and you really cannot predict whether your ideas are going to make it or not. I think that's a sign of a healthy game with robust potential for creativity.

Waves 3/4 add to that basically immediately (anyone at GenCon could have theirs, and everyone else will have them by week's end). They open up options for some squadrons, ships, and past upgrades that had fallen a bit out of favor. There are new combinatory effects waiting to be discovered. And there's also a huge difference between how your average run of the mill player runs an Interdictor, and how an excellent skilled player runs one. Sometimes, you have to wait for that skilled player to really test what a unit/upgrade/ship/combination can do.

I always feel its kind of obtuse and arrogant to declare that the company who designs, produces and releases the game, are wrong...

Flat in the face of what is said by them.

There are many, multiple reasons why it may be so - but in the end, FFG has said this is Wave 3, and Wave 4. They are arriving simultaniously in stores, but, they are Wave 3 and Wave 4...

To call it anything else, is to say that you know better than the people doing it. That you have superhuman clairvoyance into the way and means and decisions that FFG has made.

And if that's the case.

TELL US WHAT WAVE 6 IS, BECAUSE YOU'RE HOLDING OUT ON US, YOU PSYCHIC BASTARD! :D

To go back to the topic, I think more options mean more fleet diversity, which is awesome. People will explore more diverse fleets and learn them well, so I think the game will become more about knowing the capabilities of your ships and how to deal with all the tricks that could be thrown your way.

I think we're in for some time in crazy town as far as the meta goes. I'm totally ok with that.......

Thank God. Better than X-Wing's lack of diversity in the top tables at most tourneys.

I am a psychic bastard. Also–new objectives and objective type, flotillas, unique squadrons without named characters: wave 6 will introduce a third scummy faction (Fingers crossed)

Also, I think that with so many new dynamics, there won't possibly be enough time for a true meta to shake out. Too many new things will be available for people to try, so they're going to try them all. They won't get good enough because they keep switching hands (I'm guilty of this in ping pong) and the competitive players are just going to fall back to old tricks (demo). But I hope that's not the case.

Sadly it is getting harder and harder for a third faction to be added. Right now we have the Lancer, Scurrg, Firespray, Aggressor, and the YV666 represented. While it would be possible to add a third faction, with those squadrons taken they would have to dig deep into the Zann Consortium and other areas to do it but they could. It would be interesting
