Top 8 builds, anyone?

By zhentil, in Star Wars: Imperial Assault

Hey there everyone. I was not able to attend GenCon so i was just wondering where I can find the top 8 builds.

I have been trying to find the same thing.

All I've found so far is top 2 was Obiwan, Gideon, 3po, 3 wookiees units and Blaise, ISB, Officer, couple units of Stormtroopers

Yup. Interestingly, as far as I can tell, the Imperial list had one eStormtroopers, one rStormtroopers w/ Vader's Finest and two eISBs - a bit of a left-field setup in my book. They played One Man's Thrash dor the finals.

Brian Vandergalien played that Imperial list and took the trophy. Congrats!

Is there a stream of any of that stuff?

Is there a stream of any of that stuff?

No GenCon is not streamed. It's quite likely Team Covenant recorded it however and will be posting to their YouTube channel this week when they get all their videos edited.

well thank you in advance Team Covenant. I really wish FFG would try a lot harder to cover these games. I know it's NOT worlds but it's GenCon man.

It's sadly very costly and difficult to stream from gencon due to the high demand on Internet services there. That's why FFG works closely with TC though.

It doesn't need to be streamed. I just want to see a good recording.

I was there in person, watching the final game. I'm sorry to say that no, it wasn't recorded at all.

Yes, the mission was One Man's Trash. Basically, the gameplay flowed this way: the Wookiees and Obiwan all clogged up the top hallway (with the terminal), but then Brian opened the door and started with a big Grenade 3 that hit something like 5 or 6 rebel figures. Then chaos and carnage ensued, with the regular Stormtroopers falling pretty quickly, and the Imperials focusing their fire on one Wookiee at a time until it died, and so on. Lots of carnage, lots of back and forth. Brian used Zillo Technique several times to keep a figure alive at 1 Health so that it would require another attack or cleave before it died. In the end, the Wookiees were falling faster than the Troopers and Infiltrators, and so the Wookiees had to retreat and things ended relatively shortly after that. I don't recall seeing any crates picked up or turned in, but I did have to step away for a few moments so it might've happened a little bit.

Brian Vandergalien is our GenCon champion, and he played his squad to perfection!

Thanks for that thereisnotry - interesting to hear.

Did you play yourself mate? What list did you take?

I did play. I did really well, too! I was 3rd place after Swiss. I won my Top 16 game, but then lost to Brian the Champion in my Top 8 game.

I played this:

9 ▪ The Grand Inquisitor
9 Elite Stormtrooper
9 Elite Wing Guard
8 HK Assasin Droid
1 ▪ Temporary Alliance
2 Imperial Officer
2 Imperial Officer
I had hoped that the Wing Guards' Keep the Peace ability along with their surge for Recover 2 would be more effective, but I often found that I needed the extra Accuracy instead. So in hindsight I'd probably drop the eWing Guards for another group of eStormtroopers. Regardless, this squad was a pile of fun to play!
I really didn't need to fear white dice so much, since I have the Inquisitor's Deadly ability and the HK's ability to force a reroll of defensive dice. It also has some pretty solid ranged punch...I was able to come away with a 19-6 lead after killing the Dianoga in my Top 16 game.
The Inquisitor can also be extremely effective when you strike at just the right time; if you just toss him out there he'll get roasted, but if you can set up a good nova-strike on one of your opponent's key pieces, then he can be a game-changer. He single-handedly turned the tables in a couple of my games on Saturday.

I did play. I did really well, too! I was 3rd place after Swiss. I won my Top 16 game, but then lost to Brian the Champion in my Top 8 game.

I played:

  • 2x eStormtrooper w/ 2x Cross Training
  • 1x rStormtrooper
  • 2x rOfficer
  • 1x rRoyal Guard
  • Zillo Technique
  • Rule by Fear

My other loss was to the 2nd-place(?) Wookiee points denial list. It was on Deception Game so I had no other avenues to get points; a really bad matchup. I almost killed the 2nd Wookiee I would have needed to win at the end of round 4 but didn't quite get there and ended up loosing 4-0 (the only points scored were from Diplomatic mission on Gideon).

Other than that my list performed as expected flexing between solid offense with 9 Stormtroopers, defense powered by Royal Gaurds, and objective grabbing helped by just having lots of figures to move around. Zillo was great as expected and the Spy Cards granted from Cross Training were useful too.

Thanks to everyone who came out to play!

Here are the final rankings/standings for the Imperial Assault Nationals at GenCon on Saturday:

[Edit: if someone can tell me how to post the image itself here then I'd be grateful. I keep getting the "you can't post an image with that file extension here" message, or something like that. I tried jpg, png, and gif.]

I don't know the specific builds that people were using, but I do know that the semi-final included 2 Rebels facing off (one with Luke/Leia/Obiwan/Davith/Gideon/R2/3P0, vs the Wookiee/Obiwan squad that was in the final), as well as Brian's Blaise build vs a Mercenary build with (I think) 2 eNexu.

The faction breakdown of the Top 16:

6 Rebel

9 Imperial

1 Mercenary

I played against a few of these Top 16 people (lost to Nick Vance, who is an excellent player!), so I can try to remember their builds.

1. Julian Horvath. Never played him.

2. Travis Cooper. Never played him either.

3. Me. I played against him and his Inquisitor/HK/Trooper squad all day. I lost every time! He plays too quickly, and really should slow down and be more methodical with his decision-making process. Also, somebody needs to tell him that sometimes it's okay to run your pieces away in order to deny points. It seems like all he wanted to do was attack his opponent's pieces, rather than wasting time on gathering mission Objectives. Maybe it was because he played WotC's SWM for years and learned that the best way to win a miniatures skirmish game is to be aggressive. Regardless, it was fun. :)

4. Nick Vance played a Stormtrooper/Snowtrooper/Guard squad. He beat me on One Man's Trash...it would've ended with a 21-20 score, but I knew this and so I risked it all to kill his last remaining Guard (and therefore prevent the 4 vp from the Guard's crate), but I didn't do enough damage. It was also my only game that went to time.

5. Desmond Miller. I had the pleasure of playing him in a separate IA event the day earlier, and wow, he is good! I was playing my Inquisitor squad in that game, but he had me on the ropes with his Nexu/Bossk build, which he said was his "fun" build. lol. Great player, and a friendly guy. He played Twins and eRebel Troopers on Saturday.

6. Brian Vandergalien...yeah, we all know he's cool. And the Champion! Well-deserving. In hindsight, I think I could've beaten him in our Top 8 game, but I made a couple of mistakes (dumb mistakes in hindsight) that really sealed the game for him. This was the only match all day where I lost more than half of my pieces.

11. Ryan Stripling. Really cool guy! I played him and managed to come from behind for a win on Constant Motion. I was able to run the Inquisitor 9 squares in a flanking maneuver, to one-shot Leia with Force Rush, Urgency, Element of Surprise, etc. Something like that. Very exciting game!

14. Eric Dietsch. Someone I'd love to play again. I thought that I myself was quick with map setup, but this guy should go to the Olympics for it! lol Really classy guy, too. Great sportsmanship, and lots of fun to play. He even made me an honorary member of Phoenix Squadron (which is his local gaming group), and gave me a membership sticker!

17. Paul Heaver (I finally got to meet him and his wife on Saturday) was playing troopers (Storms, Snows). I didn't play him though. When Nick Vance and I played in Round 4, he had just beaten Paul Heaver in Round 3. So maybe Nick is the first person to beat Paul Heaver at IA since the IA Worlds Championship last November? Regardless, Paul missed out on the Top 16 by a very close Extended SoS.

I have one last comment to make for now: WIDE OPEN META!!! Wow, it was great! I don't think I played against a duplicate squad all day. I was both surprised and thrilled to see a Rebel Heroes squad in the semi-final. And wookiees? Great! There were a lot of troopers, but there was a pile of variety in those builds too. Compare this to last year's heavily restricted meta (you must play either 4x4 or Rebel Blast or Lose), and it's a truly beautiful thing, in every sense of the word, to see how far the game has come!

Thumbs up! Real men always go all in ... ;)

Yes, it is pretty awesome to see how the meta is wide open.

Wide open Meta and only one Scum build

just kidding, I'm actually jealous. I don't get to play very often because of lack of opponents, so having a couple of days to play new people and various lists sounds like a blast. I wish there was more of a network to play tournaments, but I never hear about them and would have to travel quite a bit, so knowing in advance is a must.

Wide open Meta and only one Scum build

Scum is getting a bunch of stuff in the next Jabba's Realm expansion. I wouldn't be surprised to see it taking a lot of the meta after that's released.

who here plays in Texas? I was looking for places to come and visit to play (Gencon is a bit far away, but I don't mind driving a bit.)

paul heaver 17. not making it to top 16 only on opp/opp score tiebraker...shame

Big thanks to thereisnotry for linking that list of the ranks and your insights into some of the players/lists.
