My local club is having an open day in a few weeks and I intend to demo a few games to get some more local people playing. Just want to make sure I have all the facts before making recommendations. Does the old starting set now come with the updated rules/ damage deck?

Nope, comes with the original rules and damage deck.

The "new" rules are just the old rules plus rules for additional actions and special abilities that appear in expansions. But every single expansion with extra rules includes either a rules insert or cards explaining those additional rules.

The new damage deck is a slightly revised version of the old one. Some of the wordings have been rewritten to be clearer and a few cards have been replaced with new cards. You can use the old deck and the new deck in the same game with no problems whatsoever.

The old deck is quite a bit different from the new. Such as the card that removes your pilot ability!!!!
