New Guy wants to build and mod a lightsaber

By MrCool, in Star Wars: Force and Destiny RPG

Hey everyone!

I'm doing my first force and destiny game at knight level and I have never played a mechanic! Let me see if I'm doing this right or wrong.

I've got a crystal and a lightsaber hilt. To put them together I do a hard PPP mechanics or lore check?

Then if I want to add an attachment I just pay the prive for it and it's added. But if I want to mod my crystal I start with a hard PP check (downgraded by two because I'm working on my own). If I succeed, yay! If not I fail permanently for that specific mod.

Gear question: If I picked up a weapon maintenance (lightsaber) system from savage spirits would the listed bonus for modifying weapons work for my crystal mods?

Thanks in advance.

Keeping the Peace actually has a "Lightsaber Tool Kit" in it.

As for having a hilt and crystal, and the difficulty in putting them together, the difficulty you mentioned is for actually making your own hilt from scratch, not in adding the crystal to it. Adding a crystal to a lightsaber follows the same rules for adding any other attachments. The same goes for adding mods to a crystal.

By RAW, Adding a crystal to a lightsaber does require a check (Your GM may differ).

The check comes from building your own hilt (if using the GM kit rules) or applying a mod to the crystal or hilt.

Alright so if I buy a hilt and a crystal I should not need a check to create?

Why would I make a hilt from scratch?

RAW here. There's no need to tip toe around the GM as we rotate and are both confused.

The core rule book, page 177 has costs for pre-made lightsaber hilts. According the the RAW, simply adding a crystal to a lightsaber hllt does not require any checks. It's the same as adding any attachment. The GM Screen has advanced rules for lightsaber construction, and the difficulties mentioned in the GM screen are for constructing the hilt, not adding the crystal. Check out this thread for more information.

Simply building a lightsaber hilt and installing the crystal doesn't require any sort of skill check to actually build, as discussed on page 177 in the sidebar "Lightsaber Hilts." The only check required is one to find the necessary parts, which is the same required to track down any sort of item a PC is looking to purchase.

The only time you'd need to make a skill check to construct a lightsaber hilt is if the GM is using the optional rules included in the GM Kit, which for the most part adds an additional level of complication that largely won't provide any serious long-term benefit; if you're not rolling any proficiency or challenge dice, then the only difference is that it may take more/less time and/or require less/more credits to build the hilt.

As for the Weapon Maintenance Kit, per the writers of the book, no such item exists for lightsabers, as 'saber hilts are each a "one of a kind" construction as opposed to blaster pistols or vibroswords which are produced assembly-line fashion.

Well, it also makes it possible for you to get added benefits, such as the free mod to your first attachment, as well as a potential additional Hard Points for Triumph rolls on your mechanics check (and potential losses of HP for Despair rolls). And, as Donovan said, the maintenance kits are for standard weapons, not lightsabers, for that you need the Lightsaber Tool Kit I mentioned above from Keepers of the Peace.

I will check out the linked conversation.

Thanks so much for the clear and concise answers. I am much more cognizant of what's going on now.

Also, while your GM may vary, I rule that in order for the lightsaber to count as your personal saber and qualify for the 2 difficulty reduction, you have to have built the hilt from scratch.
