I actually think going without squads will be more and difficult as we head into Wave 5.

As i see it, building a "balanced" fleet that is prepared for everything is going to get harder and harder:

Do you have a Demo counter?

Do you have a squadron counter?

Do you prepare for the Interdictor Grav-shift/well shenanigans (trust me folks, these are amazing and real)?

Are you prepared for Sato and his ever changing dice?

Etc, etc.

You will not be able to be prepared for everything now. We haven't even seen all of the Wave 5 cards and my head is spinning with possibilities.

That said, there will be too many squad combinations that will absolutely tear the $#%* out of a no-squads fleet. Having some semblance of an anti-squad will give you the most flexibility against the upcoming squadron extravaganza.

Ehhhh i won a regional championship with 3x Vic/Rhymerball build and faced a nearly identical list in the final game... so sqadrons are useful,,, i faced a CR TRC swarm 3 times with my list over 3 turnaments and beat it every time...

lots of squadron lists. My first game was a loss due to some horrible ramming on my side of things, games 2 and 3 were my wins and against squadron builds all of them.

You had no squadrons

You had no squadrons

Where the Clonisher aims for complete domination through the destruction of ships, Dodonna the Oppressor aims for making up for expected losses and instead of just trading up, it aims for objective domination and even picks opponents Advanced Gunnery

Clonisher, DtO, lol, is this really the lingo people are using these days? What happened to DeMSU or Rebel Swarm? I still think having squadrons in the list is safer to play. I just don't feel comfortable suggesting to anyone to play without squadrons these days.

Technically, Clonisher was used before DeMSU was... DeMSU came about to describe a sub-list that didn't use Clonisher's exact stats.

And DtO again, is a specialised sub-list of the Rebel Swarm list... Mostly because rebel swarms are ill-defined themselves.

To play without squadrons you have to be gutsy. You have to know the risks and rewards and be prepared for lucky rolls. It is not easy and it is nerve racking. I would never suggest it for newer players or players not experienced enough unless they are willing to lose a lot.
