Forced to focus

By RogueCommander, in Star Wars: Armada

For me, I get restless and rarely focus on one list for very long. This results in rarely tabling (due to lack of consistent practice), but I like experimenting and variety, so there is that.

A negative result of this though, is that after almost a year of play, I don't know that I've settled on a specific 'play style, or even that I know what it is'. I try to simply play the fleet I've put together, regardless of whether or not it fits any personal style.

My thoughts are that this may finally have to change with Waves 3-5. There are so many options now, that if I have any interest in competitive play, I'm going to have to settle down and start really looking for that fleet that reflects my thinking and skill.

So, my question is this - how did you find your playstyle and lists that complement it? I talked to some of the San Antonio guys at Regional and I think one of them had been playing the same basic fleet for months with small tweaks here and there. How do you deal with striking that balance between expertise with a list and not getting bored running the same basic fleet over and over?

I think each wave will see more and more people hitting their stride. I did not win my first tournament until I started playing at 400 points and from there it has been up and down.

Find what interests you most and play with it. You can focus on the concept but still change the list around. Toy with both factions and once you start getting something you are comfortable with, start tweaking that.

For instance, if I wanted a carrier heavy fleet that had a lot of firepower, I could go multiple Neb Escorts with Flight Coordination Teams, I could go MC80 Command Cruiser with B-Wings and Flight Coordination Team, I could go with Assault Frigates with Y-Wings and YT-2400's

Each is a list with a lot of firepower but they all play differently.

Well this stems from how you consider what is a fleet?

Is it a collection of ships and squadrons or something more?

For me its something more. I have had a few fleets I have managed it for, and the reason why I return to them, tweak them, improve them, is because they are more than just a set of squads.

My first fleet - Keyans abuse. This fleet is all about abusing Keyan as much as possible. Yavaris, Adar et al. To do this I needed intel and an escort/fighter contigent, so naturally Rieeks commanders.

This list has had multiple nebs, flotillas, MC80s, assault frigates, cr90s, Dash, Han, Tycho, Nym, Wedge, Luke, Dutch..... and so on. However at the core its still, yavaris, Adar and Keyan.

The second list - Ackbar star destroyers. Mc30 torpedos with enhanced armanents and ackbar. They have varied in upgrades, squadron composition etc, but fundamentally its about burst damage.

The third list - Tarkins rogue glads. A list built around the mobility of tarkin glads to avoid death whilst the rogues do their thing and win the game. Its an odd list to play, but brings a refreshing outlook on the game.

Sure I have tried out other fleet, but these are the ones I return to because they are good, and can be mixed up multiple ways. Thats also why I dont get bored, each time its slightly different, and occasionally I rebuild from scratch.

So to answer your question, think of a fleet as a concept not a finished article.

Funny I love mc30s with ackbar and tarkin glads too.

Do you really like the torp with enhanced that much more than going straight to the scout for reds?

I detest ackbar gunlines. And that should be enough to answer your question.

Right there with ya

Wait. . . wha. . . I thought you were the doer of the MC30 ISD Line?

No.

My MC30s deliver a 3red,2blue,3black salvo. But they do so in bursts. Each of the three is capable of taking a turn at the front hitting hard.

I think of it as tika taka Armada. Possession of the last/first activation passing between ships fluidly. If Jaina ends up in posession I am screwed. Sure she can do a lot of damage with a double trc arc, buts its no ISD front salvo!

Watch the replays, you will find no hint of a formation, although of course its all about formation.

Admonition is the best false nine in the world right now.

LOL...Love the false nine reference!!!

Lol, thanks.

I just keep playing different lists never getting the practice I need on any one list.....after all.....winning is for....um.....well......losers...... Mmmmmmmm....

Ok maybe I need to stick with one fleet.......

Its not wrong. Test EVERYTHING!, Test, test, test, then test some more. My Dodonna the Oppressor came from a concept of bringing Dodonna back, the Clonisher came from a desire to make Vader work.

Find a card and build a concept around that then test it!

I laughed because it's kind of an obvious point.
