Help me out with Special Ops Training

By Parakitor, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Here's the card text:

Special Ops Training TIE/sf only. Title. When attacking with a primary weapon from your primary firing arc, you may roll one additional attack die. If you do not, you may perform an additional attack from your auxiliary firing arc.

At first I thought the phrase "if you do not" referred to making a primary weapon attack from the primary firing arc, but it's that word "additional" that gets me. Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't that mean that to get my auxiliary firing arc shot I am required to first have a legal target in my primary firing arc and attack it with two attack dice? This would make the aux arc a lot harder to use, but RAW, it looks like I can't just fly away like Kath and blast away at my pursuers unless there's an enemy in front, too. Right?

That's the way I read it. You either get one attack in the primary arc with an extra die, or you get a normal primary attack and an auxiliary arc attack.

Note that you can just use your normal 2 die primary in the aux arc, you just don't get any benefit at all for the title if you do.

You don't think you can just attack in the aux arc on its own?

Of course you can still attack with your aux arc normally.

I'm sure Parravon meant "If you're going to use the title, you either...".Of course you can still attack with your aux arc normally.

But he's agreeing with OP, and OP definitely thinks you can't just attack with the aux arc. (”it looks like I can't just fly away like Kath and blast away at my pursuers unless there's an enemy in front, too")

You are wrong. The title does not restrict you to use just the auxiliary firing arc. I don't even understand where did you get this idea.

If you do NOT make an attack with your primary weapon then you did not use the first part of the title's ability. You are thereby free to use the second part of the title's ability. Attacking with a primary may be required to used the first part of the ability but it is using that which cancels the second part; attacking with the primary is not required to enable the additional attack.

That would mean that you can attack twice from the auxiliary arc.

Ok, I may have misread the OP's initial question a little.

You normally get one attack per round. This can be using the primary arc or the auxiliary arc.

When you equip the title, you can add an extra die to a primary arc attack, OR make a normal primary arc attack AND an auxiliary arc attack (the additional attack).

Ah! I see. I'll admit I don't know the specifics for the TIE/sf auxilary firing arc but when I read the OP I was given the impression that he thought you couldn't attack out of the rear arc unless you also attacked in the primary arc as well. I'm very certain that is not intended although I wouldn't be totally surprised if the only way to access the auxilary firing arc was via the title.

I think Parravon and I may have both had the same problem with the OP's question.

Since the TIE comes with what it seems to be the standard Auxiliary Firing Arc reference card, it's not wild to guess that it CAN make a single attack from its rear arc by default.

I think you are overthinking this, guys.

Yep. I WAY overthought this one. I asked Frank today, and he said, "Sure, it's just like any other auxiliary firing arc." At which point I kind of face palmed for asking this question. For some reason I thought the title is what gave it the auxiliary arc, which is just plain wrong. It's all sorted out now. The title let's you either:

a) Attack with Primary arc with a bonus attack die,

b) fire with the rear arc with 2 ATK, or

c) fire with 2 out the front AND 2 out the back

Suddenly I like this ship even more, and I am thrilled to have two of them!

You should scratch b) as you can do that without the title.

Please don't confuse me anymore now that I've got it figured out. I just listed what the ship can do if it has the title, not what the title let's you do.

It's just that this is what got some of us into trouble in the first place!

W/o title: Shoot out of front OR back.

W/ title: Shoot out back as normal. Shoot out front only with bonus die if you want to although you don't need to use the bonus die. Shoot out both sides.

Shoot out both sides.

The TIE/sf can shoot out its sides!!!!

(just to screw with Parakitor)
