I think the only thing that makes giving the Rebels a TIE Fighter ok is the fact that they made them all unique pilots and we're lazy and recycled two of the characters already present.
It's one thing that they teach you in econ to look out for: opportunity cost. If you fly Sabin or Zeb in a TIE fighter, you can't use them as attack shuttle pilots or crew.

Especially since Sabine's TIE specifically is 15pts naked, fully expecting her to become the rebel's goto bumper. Cheap, pre-maneuver barrelroll or boost, can add a few points for some crew shenanigans if you wish. The shuttle as it is can be a pain in the butt with the right skills but its also a bit pricy and doesnt have as great of a dial.
It's almost as if Rebels don't already have a blockers for that cost!
The Rebels had exactly one ship in the 18-point range that could barrel roll: Lt. Blount with VI. They're now getting some 14-15 point Z-95s with Vectored Thrusters that can pull the same trick.
However, the 14-19 point range for Rebels was sparse. You had Talas at 13 points, Prototype Pilots with Chardaan for 15, and then you have the Green Squadron Pilot starting at 17. However, if you're running a Green Squadron, it's usually because you want something in that EPT slot, so now you're looking at spending at least 18 points (for Adaptability/Crack Shot) and probably more like 20-21 (for PTL). The list of named pilot options the rebels had under 20 points were Blount (who was probably going to be at least 20 after you put a missile on him) and Cracken.
Sabine's TIE fills a serious void for Rebel squad-building: a quartet of named pilots for under 19 points. That it also gives them a cheap Illicit option will just be gravy on top of that.

Not only is the ship not unique, but you only have to buy two with the original core set to fly all four pilots
You just need the pilot cards and bases, any Tie fighter model and dial will do

True, but that just invites FFG to add Vulture Droids to the Imperial fleet, and nobody wants that. At least the stolen TIE has been a regular occurence in a modern-era show.

You could always give him Vectored Thrusters for the same cost as EH. You wouldn't need to take a stress to barrel-roll.
well, technically VT's make the basic 12pt Z the better bumper since he'd be 14pts and goes even earlier, since bumpers usually wanna move first.
Though at that point...just take Zeb...13pts more agility native barrelroll. No shields, but he cancels crits first anyway which is just as good.
I didn't like the rebel TIE at first but its unique in all it's forms so max you can take is 4. That makes since as they are captured TIE and the Rebels use anything the have on hand that flies.
Ah give the Rebels their TIE, they won't know how to handle such a finely tuned craft anyways, they are weighing it down with crew and upgrades, that will only make it explode in a brighter flash.

I remember a few months ago when having a pilot on two different ships blew our minds.
So the Empire cannot receive any small ship that isn't a TIE because apparently that would dilute their identity, but they will freely hand out a TIE to the damned rebel terrorists?!?
Let's just say that as an Imperial player, the last several waves have been garbage. The only good expansion we've gotten has been Imperial Vets.
