The dimensions aren't really an issue. All the TIE Fighters in Rebels are squished like that . It's just artistic license.
However, there's still the missing panels, of course.
I'm sure Rebels season 3 will come up with ships for at least one wave.
If the quasar comes to Armada, I might cheat on X-Wing.

Early on, the newcanon (Ultimate Star Wars) was suggesting that it was a real difference - them being specially designed for ground landings - but Rebels Recon had the "artistic licence" answer.

We didn't see many new ships in TFA but I also don't recall seeing the JumpMaster, E-Wing, TIE Punisher and various others in a movie yet they seem to fly pretty well on my mat
